    A similar thing happened to me with a government official when i worked there as a summer student. I had no idea what was in store for me when he asked to see my apartment after the inter-governmental softball league game. After the assault, i didn't say anything because i knew no one would believe me over the high ranking official. I wasn't smart enough at the age of 21 to come forward like she did. Thank you Paula.

    What wasn’t brought up was that in particular, women who find themselves in these situations, are for the most part trying to preserve some sort of politeness and professionalism so as to not disturb the beast. In this case, Bill was in a higher level of power than Paula so to answer the question of “why didn’t you just leave after the first advance”- it’s very likely that she didn’t want to make him mad, being that he has more authority than her and that she was attempting to carry on like it didn’t happen until she was dismissed to leave.

      That is very true, especially at that time. Today, while not fair, it is to the point where we as women have to speak up right then and continue to speak up, even when uncomfortable, for self-preservation. We have to stop teaching our daughters "to be polite" which was always done, with good intention, but now used as a weapon against them, by the pervert and by those who support him afterwards.

    • @makaylamail97
      @makaylamail97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@betsybabf748 I agree to an extent. But I think the real issue is the mindset that some men were brought up with. Not every man is a Bill Clinton. I think parents MUST learn how to teach their boys how to behave, for the sake of women and for the preservation of themselves. There’s not one answer to fix this issue but why is it that we first look at what the WOMAN needs to do in these situations? I appreciate your comment, I’m just wondering out loud.

      Guys always pick the young ones who will be shocked, and don't know what to do, and will probably be quiet and blame themselves. He did tell the truth with Monica. He said he's had thousands of women, and been lying since he was young and gotten away with it. I was sexually harassed at work and I knew if I told it would come down on me like a ton of bricks, and not the hi ranking employee. It would be he said/she said. The way all the women who were involved during this whole debacle were portrayed and treated by the media, public, the administration, and lawyers, was so sad and disappointing-the name-calling and “slut-shaming” by professional adults was (and still is) appalling. I was about 12-13 years old when this occurred and remember watching it unfold and feeling nervous to make mistakes in life….Now here we are-over 20 years later-and social media has brought about cancel/callout culture, which is no better. Don’t get me wrong, awareness and holding folks accountable for their actions is important, but torturing them, sending harassing messages, death threats, being disrespectful…I just can’t get on board with that…where did kindness go? Why do people like to watch other folks falter and fail? And what about forgiveness, mercy, the high road? Do these things exist still, or have we slowly been stripped down to our baser instincts? It feels like we can’t make any missteps ever-they could come back to haunt us and destroy our lives and livelihoods. It’s sad…I’m even a little anxious posting comments (like right now) on any social media platform, because humans are awful behind their keyboards. And we don’t understand (or care?) how harmful we can be…How did we as a species get here? Can we change? … I hope so.

      This was at the height of Jerry Springer and a perfect example of how public perceptions/morals can change in a very short time span. Roseanne had just begun to get her bearings as an interviewer, but this episode completely destroyed her show -- and not for the reasons that you'd THINK looking at it today. Hollywood didn't like that she was speaking out against Bill Clinton, and all of her big-name bookings dried up the moment that this aired. Suddenly, the only guests she could get were authors, doctors, gurus, and the like.

    I'm surprised at how nuanced and open minded Rosanne is being here. I also always suspected Paula was never the idiot/bimbo they tried to portray her as. She was naive (what 23 year wouldn't be), very folksy and provincial. Not dumb.
    That one question at 32:25 was mad stupid. How was she gonna set the President up to be impeached BG having sexually harrass her in a hotel room he asked her to come to BEFORE he was even President? What a profoundly shortsighted and stupid question.

    What a stupid questions: 1. Why you didn't get out of the office fast after his first pass?
    2.Why did you go to hotel?
    If it was me, I wouldn't run away either. His first attempt I would have estimated as testing the water and I would want to make sure that he gets clearly my No to his advances is solid. Then I'd gracefully give him a chance to back out of this situation smoothly by talking something regular and part in the civil manner. He was the governor - not the random stranger that you don't know what to expect, so I would want to reject him gracefully, not storming out the door like wild bronco. Rejecting in the tactful manner is what the classy women do.
    I had similar situation happening to me and my boss just said after first futile attempt: keep in mind that even laying my eyes on you makes me really happy, so don't disappear from my sight for too long please. He actually wanted me to come to him on my terms if I had any interest. So we parted nicely and he didn't do further advances, but was always attentive.
    How was the girl assume that he's going to drop his pants down instead of just talking normally? Like it's the expected norm. It's not expected norm for normal people and it shouldn't be! Just like if the man invites you to stop at his house or hotel room. I did stop at the hotel rooms and once there was an attempt to charm me, but no violation; other time there was: "can you please deliver this book to our bookkeeper?". Therefore, not all men like Clinton and not always they have sex on mind, so women that follow the invitation should not expect immediately some sexual advances, especially when governor /person of authority, who never even met you personally, invites you to his office at the hotel.
