Homemade Firewood Processor - Log Splitter To Firewood Processor Ep. 5

- Log splitter to firewood processor conversion. Taking an electric-hydraulic 7 tonne splitting force log splitter and converting it to a homemade firewood processor. The drawbacks of the current log splitter are the low height, single edge wedge and no firewood pan around the wedge so you have to constantly pick up pieces of wood you still want to split making the handling of the wood time consuming and annoying. Still better than splitting the wood with an axe though! Also you have to pre-cut the material you want to split. My plan is to put this log splitter on wheels, weld some steel to the trailer and around the wedge, add a log feed conveyor and a chain saw blade with separate electric motor and call it a firewood processor. It will make the firewood making process much simpler. Why haven't we done it sooner... It will take a log up to 3 m in length on the feed conveyor and a 35 cm cut log in the splitter since the stroke of the splitter is only 40 cm. I had to leave extra 5 cm wiggle room. But it's okay - our fireplaces are quite small. My sauna stove takes even as small as 25 cm firewood, and also my workshop stove. In addition to this creation I want to build firewood crates so we don't have to stack firewood ever again. And moving firewood will be as simple as that - just pick up the crate (with a machine) and deliver it wherever you want/need. No more re-re-re-stacking and unnecessary time consuming wood handling. Sounds like a TV commercial but it will be that good. Come along for the journey!

Hi Donn, congratulations on the project. I would add one more thing: a small switch on the log transport cart, so you can only activate the saw start button when the cart is back. To prevent the saw from inadvertently hitting it when it is running.
@Nicola Prisco. it’s hard to criticise something as well built as this being home made with mostly hand tools. But when I was watching the first run video and was thinking if Don got out of sinc with the saw it would eventually hit the travel bed. Simple limit switch would do the trick.

Switch would be great! Human errors are so simple to occur (tired, mind in another direction, problems at home etc)! My buddy was working in the woods on chainsawing. He had a worker (had 10-15 years of experience) who said "i don't need no safety pants", buddy of mine then said: "then don't come back here". Literally the next day, he appeared with safety pants on and sawed into the leg, pants saved him with no scratch on the leg! Safety, safety, safety!!!!
Yes a contact switch on the tray that closes the circuit of the saw switch when it's in the rear location.
I was thinking the same, but although it would be safer it would also slow him down because he can cut part of the log without waiting for it to fully retract.

@@billloomis4975 I'm guessing because the base of it, the 5 ton wood splitter, is electric, so he kept it simple staying electric.

I really like this design of fire wood processor, almost ever other one I look at has so much going on and people build them big with limited capacity but this , this works great and it is ATV size for if you are working in the woods or clearing a wood lot. I will be making my own fire wood processor and I "will" be taking notes off your's for mine. Awesome build Donn !!!!

I don't think that you'd be able to run it in the woods unless you had a power supply, such as a generator.

Donn: Easier than a conveyer, get some pallets, add 2 sides and a top brace, and place it near the end of the wood chute. It can be moved by a fork-lift. Thanks for the video. Jon (Vanya)

Super awesome build, from conception to start and finish. Now you just need to park your wood hauler just below the wood dropout area so its loaded for you automatically. Or make the next series a fold down / telescoping conveyor to take the processed wood into a wood hauler that lays out the wood in straight stacked rows. Very impressive ideas you have and execution of the builds.

I am seriously impressed. Now that I can see it all working together, everything makes sense. I think I imagined you would pull this out into the woods where you were felling the trees, but I see now that's unnecessary.
The oiler is great by the way. Perfection in design is to make something only as complex as it needs to be and no more. This is pretty much that!

At first I was thinking this didn't seem any faster/easier then just cutting the logs by hand, but then I remembered it also splits the logs! lol Turned out awesome. Can't wait to see the conveyor.

Quite the splitter, very mechanically inclined.
One thing you need is a 4 or 6" belt sander. W hen you take some of those parts to the grinding wheel it makes chills go down my back. From a Tool and die maker of 40 years. Don't stop inventing!
