Vantage cons: feels big/heavy compared to 911, electrical gremlins, poor paintwork prep from factory means despite aluminium panels you'll still get bubbles under the paint, clutches don't last long and are exprensive to replace. 996 pros: just feels great, light front end, narrow - easy to play with narrow Scottish roads, really a bargain for what they are, no slower despite 80bhp deficit, feels great, nimble, feels really rather nice. 996 cons, engines can go boom, interior not great, ugly headlights (yawn).
Love the content Hagerty is putting out right now, but you guys seriously have to rethink this title. Like the S2000 episode, this is not a "buyer's guide." This is a look back at a great car and maybe a few reasons why you should buy it. Not a buyer's guide.
Absolutely. For this, he showed a couple Doug-style quirks like the fly-off handbrake, but mostly just talked about what it was like to drive and why we all should get one. Sam Smith's piece on the 2CV was much more "buyers guide" as he actually got underneath it and talked about rust and mechanical issues and cheap fixes.
I know, i know, 911 was (and still is?) its main competitor and it's a great car, but i came to watch a "buyer's guide" of Aston Vantage, not 10 reasons why 911 is better
Totally agree. I love the 911 but while the Porsche is the better car the AM offers a different experience, (which is great right). Not to mention the AM is better looking and sounds amazing. Although if it was my money I'd be looking for a manual V12 Vantage....
Honestly, I would much prefer this to the 911, because I will rarely, if ever, take it to a racetrack, and the looks and sound of this make for such an amazing experience every time you use it.
I bought a post-Ford era V8V, 2010, wouldn't ever go back. Love the 911, but I'd take this 10 times out of 10. Phenomenal experience, but it is highly recommended that you know how to work on it yourself. Makes it much cheaper to own.
Personally not 911 but Maserati grandturismo. Same concept but did it better. Beautiful, fit 4 adult comfortably, and the sound is just out of this world
Thought about selling mine a couple times, always back out. Manual 4.7L with headers, cat delete, tune, intake box delete, lightened flywheel with dual disc clutch, shocks and lowering springs, 2 rotors and lighter wheels and wider rubber. At a tick under 500bhp it's the car it should have been from the factory. I've put about 45k miles on it in 5 years and not one issue. That includes several track days.
i'll confess... after i bought my 2007 I upped my wardrobe a bit (a low bar to raise to be sure)... i felt the car deserved something other than a five year-old faded blue jogging outfit with a few white paint marks on it. now that was fine with my 2001 bread truck white base model dodge ram pickup but with the aston, a little embarrassing to be honest. :)
It was not a car designed to be driven at 10/10ths on the track. It was always going to be a long distance tourer and at that it excells. The boot/trunk is big enough to take proper luggage, the steering is very well weighted with oodles of feel, the gear change is exact (especially once the oil has some temperature in it). The only weakness within the drive train on this car is the clutch. But once it's spent anyone in their right mind will change it out for a twin plate unit with lightened flywheel. This makes all the difference, bite and feel is much better, throttle response is much improved in the lower areas of the rev range and in all honesty 5000 rpm isn't when things come alive, it's actually 4000rpm and this is also when the valves in the exhaust are actuated and the real noise is let loose. Door struts are around £20 each and are easily fitted. Water flowing into the trunk is a flaw. The handbrake is a work of art and does not in anyway infringe on the driving of the car because it's tucked away. The Vantage is a wonderous car to drive, especially in an era of anadine electric cars, the manual Vantage is a visceral experience, it has plentiful character and every journey is an event.
I truly do not understand the mindset of buying a car to baby or pamper. A car is to be driven. Provided the availability of funds, if I owned an Aston Martin, or any high-end sports/exotic/supercar, I would daily it with proper, regular maintenance. Anyone with garage queens are missing out on the point of a vehicle. This remains true on what many deem “collector” cars. Again, cars should not be curated like museum pieces. There are two types of car buyers. Logic minded consumers usually buy with a few factors in mind such as budget, maintenance costs, and insurability. Enthusiasts buy with the heart; they buy because the car provides smiles per gallon.
Fair point, I guess there's two schools of thought on that. It comes down to whether you're buying it for the looks and the sound, or you're buying it to drive fast. Either way, I think a Jaguar from the same era is much better value - mechanically similar to the old 4.3L Aston (Aston used the Jag motor as a base), but you don't have to pay the James Bond tax.
This car is officially in Old School Territory now. I'm really thinning about picking gone up in 2024. This M.Y. Vantage looks like a classic piece of jewelry, and much more appealing than the new age Vantage/Benz
I spot a couple subtle mods. Dbs shift knob. Lowering springs. Secondary cat delete. Great car and for the money it’s bound to be more appreciated as we get more electronic cars.
If you have the money the V12 Vantage manual is the way to go. Built in 2011, 2012 and them again in 2017, nothing beats a V12 with a manual transmission. They built less than 150 V12 manuals in 2011-2012 if you can find one for sale (owners love them) you are sure to have a future collectable.

This guy is commenting on its sporting characteristics against 911 while driving a car with lowering springs.. Drive a standard vantage and you'll see it is very capable, drive a later 4.7 sports pack car or Vantage S and it will really surprise you. I watched this video months ago when I was looking for mine, and Im glad I watched this. I finally got my Sports Pack Vantage last month - I'll admit I didn't test drive before buying, I didn't care how it drove I just lusted after it so bad. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised, this is no standard GT like the DB9 or other Aston's of the past - this thing is a brutal (albeit heavy) sports car, sublime balance and incredible steering feel. I came from Cayman S, Toyota GT86 and a JDM SW20 GT-S - all of which excluding the Cayman I have tracked. The Cayman blows it away for sure just down to weight and well its a Porsche, but nothing feels and makes you feel like the Vantage does - the sound, the interior, the badge. Aston didn't hold anything back with this generation of vantage (except the Volvo satnav and buttons 😂) but one look at that gorgeous bonded aluminium tub chassis and you know this is something quite serious indeed. If you're looking at getting one of these try find a 4.7, it is an incredible car. I have been lucky enough to drive a few 911s from air-cooled to modern, and I don't regret a thing - I couldn't fathom getting into a 997 instead of this after buying it. I repeat if you are looking at one of these BUY IT.
The VH Platform on which all Astons from this era are built, was originally developed by Lotus. They’re known for building some of the best handling chassis ever made. Weight distribution is even and you find double wishbone suspension in all four corners. (The new double wish bone front axle is something the new 992 GT3 gets praised for currently as no 911 ever had it before). This superior chassis is the reason why Aston Martin won everything in the early 2000‘s in long distance racing including Le Mans also besing Porsches. On Top Gear the DBS went around the track quicker then the Zonda.
I've always loved this car and I always thought it was not only the most beautiful car in the Aston Martin lineup, but arguably one of the most beautiful cars ever.
If you're wanting a car to thrash round a race track and brag to your mates about technical prowess....buy the 911....however if you want a car that is super classy, makes you feel great every time you drive it and sounds absolutely sublime at high revs out in the countryside....buy the Aston. And the advice....buy one now as I did....as they definitely won't be low price for much longer when the mainstream buyers realise how good they really are!.
I never had much respect for Brit engineering since the fantastically beautiful Jag XKE........but this car changes my mind. I knew that the English could do the job after my experience with Cosworth but this Aston Martin was a pleasant surprise. It certainly does not hurt to have some Ford DNA in it's bloodline. The sound of this engine when it comes on the cam is glorious!
A beautiful car in every way. Forget the damn 911! I'd wear a suit every time I drove it :) The "Transporter" would look good driving it, The panache of this car is beyond a Porche's ability to reach
Get a 2009 or later model, and you get an engine upsize to 4.7 and HP increase to 420. Also the glass key from the DB9 which slides into the dash and becomes the start button (and goes red if you press the clutch down first).
I take you at your word that the Vantage was designed to be a 911 competitor. But to me this is an Apples-Oranges issue. Totally different desires. I’ll just take one of each please.
Some of the other differences between the Aston Martin and the 911... The Porsche was reliable/durable enough to be used daily and actually retained some value after a few years and several thousand miles.
Is that after the engine had been rebuilt after IMF bearing failure?. A bad owner experience of a 911 is as costly as one of these. However, some people have done over 100k miles now with nothing more than good maintainence and parts replacement similar to a 911. Neither is cheap....unless its one of the many 911s that are out there which are abused and never maintained properly.
Yes, analogue! Still plenty analogue in it and that is the reason to love it. Proper car with proper gear-lever. It is not so sluggish if you ‘drive it’ right. When you park it you want to walk away backwards. The first drive in mine I thought the speedo was broken as I trundles away from the dealer😂 then I realised it was calibrated in wrap factors and 25 mph did not really make anything happen. Thank you for the vid I think you get it
In 2014 I was looking at a 09+ Vantage, it had the 4.7l engine little bit more power. At the time they were around 45-50k. However when I went to test drive it the automatic transmission sucked. And the power was still lacking. Who would have thunk 7 years later, it still retained its value. Along with the Corvettes , 911s, Rolex's and Houses... Must be all this stimulus money. I will check back after the crash to see if prices have dropped.
Should change the title, it was more of a car review than a buyer's guide. A buyer's guide should focus mainly on changes each model year, things to watch out for, options that are must and options that need to be avoided, major or common problems, rough idea on cost of ownership etc. Only points that were covered was brief mentioning of door dampers can be shot and that earlier models can have baggy seat.
Is not how much it costs, its the damn maintenance. I would of own one long time ago but damn. I instead bought cash a really low mileage black Genesis Coupe Grand Touring with the brown interior, navigation pretty much fully spec'd and got to keep a ton of money and feels literally the same after getting an aftermarket exhaust and KW coilovers. Only maintenance i had to do to it was the timing chain components and transmission fluid. No issues at all after all the miles being daily driven to work while wearing a 3 piece suit. Considering maybe getting that aston or the GTR sometime in the future as a second car.
I’ve heard maintenance isn’t that bad as long as you can find Ford branded parts. Since this is a Ford era car, lots of parts interchange with regular Ford models. So I’ve heard, anyway.
Don't get it maintained by a franchised dealer unless the car still has the Aston Timeless warranty. Find a good indie that runs the Aston software and you're good to go. The side repeaters are from a Ford transit, the door, boot and bonnet struts are £20 each etc etc.... Yes like any car you can spend big money, headlights are expensive as are tail lights and anything upgraded to carbon cost the earth but that's not maintenance.
great video, really informative! I do think the price point for the 2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a bit high considering its age. I mean, for a luxury car, you'd expect more advanced tech features. what do you all think?
I'll take the V8 over 911 in a heart beat! It isn't perfect but that makes it better in my eyes. And it is a damn pretty! My only doubt is roadster or coupe :)
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, Parker. Honestly, if it were twice as long and went even more in depth, I'd have no complaints. Also would love to see full footage of a spirited lap around Road America in this car. If I owned it, I doubt I'd track it much (this is a holy grail GT car for me), but would love to see how it behaves under duress.
you know, at one point I could have sworn there was like 30 seconds that was a verbatim repeat... for a second I thought the sh!thy chromebook was struggling and getting ready to randomly restart itself again.
Love it 😀 the manual coupe is the purest, but I also love the roadsters. Some day… 😀 By the way, what track is that? Looks fantastic at that time of year
I’ve owned a manual (silver grey coupe) bmw e46 m3 for 8yrs or so now which currently is close to a csl looks wise, wheels etc blah blah, would this car be worth upgrading too? I’ve always wanted one, thought about one hence why I’m watching another video on it 👏🏻😆
Please explain why I wouldn't want to drive this every day. You've said "That's not what it's for" but that does not explain anything. Is it too firm? Is it too fragile? Everything contained in the video tells me that I would, in fact, want to drive one every day if I had one. More information about reliability and servicing costs would also be useful.
Can't drive it in the rain? I'm out. Drove my 997 through a Tropical storm in Louisiana. Didn't leak a drop. The Vantage is dead sexy to look at though.
Yes, when it let's go, get the twin plate upgrade with lightened flywheel which costs a little less than the OEM single plate and also let's the engine rev a little more freely. One of the best upgrades/replacements of a wear part.
Yes the clutch is a wear item , the same as a thrashed 911. It depends entirely on how its driven. Shall we talk about failed IMS bearings on 911?...Ahh..that will be an engine rebuild sir.....
Just asking...Has "this" Vantage V8 series ever been powered by AMG engines ? Possibly the AM - AMG partnership got started in 2013/2014 but I might be wrong. Thanks for any info.
With all the comparisons to the Porsche 911 and your mention of a good GT car the Porsche 928 offered the same experience right down to the left side hand brake which also worked the same. So if you still want a Porsche buy a old 928!

Please bring back Sam. This guy thinks he is reviewing a 911
Yeah Parker's script/presentation is trash compared to Sam. This series doesn't work without him.
Love my Vantage! Thanks for the reminders :-)
I'm with you that thought.
Elkhart Lake is such a beautiful track. Car is nice too...
Who bought the Vantage, well that will be me, but I had a 911 first & I’ll probably have a 911 again. I love my Aston & always will.
And me. Prefer the Vantage even in lowly 4.3 spec.
@@user-qq2mo1ek2rgood to know.I need too.
The sound of this engine when it comes on the cam is glorious!
you are having a laugh - name one half way decent sports car from the USA....... no, I thought not
The reviewer is wrong when he states the exhaust note changes at 5k revs, it's actually 4k revs and its due to active valves in he exhaust.
One of the timeless design
A beautiful car in every way. Forget the damn 911! I'd wear a suit every time I drove it :) The "Transporter" would look good driving it, The panache of this car is beyond a Porche's ability to reach
Good to see Parker on Hagerty.
Get a 2009 or later model, and you get an engine upsize to 4.7 and HP increase to 420. Also the glass key from the DB9 which slides into the dash and becomes the start button (and goes red if you press the clutch down first).
My dream car
I take you at your word that the Vantage was designed to be a 911 competitor. But to me this is an Apples-Oranges issue. Totally different desires. I’ll just take one of each please.
He is very on point. I love mine.
My 2009 Vantage is a daily driver and never sets a foot wrong. I’ve had two - both very reliable. And the engine’s in the right place.
Great review, sums up why I’m hoping to get one next year 👍
It's gorgeous in that spec!
Exactly what I was thinking...
The auto box is a less desirable car because of the automated manual.... Its pretty crap that's why you should buy the manual version, way better
This was very useful, in addition to having a great-condition Vantage to look at throughouth.
Excellent video, really informative and enjoyed the pro’s and cons of the Vantage
Best Vantage review.. 🍾
It’s one of my dream car
Should change the title, it was more of a car review than a buyer's guide. A buyer's guide should focus mainly on changes each model year, things to watch out for, options that are must and options that need to be avoided, major or common problems, rough idea on cost of ownership etc. Only points that were covered was brief mentioning of door dampers can be shot and that earlier models can have baggy seat.
Love the car I would take it everywhere. way better than a 911, but I would take either if they were given to me, but the Aston first:)
I don't think you can buy the ugliest two door ever made, throw coilovers on it and call it the same as an Aston.
Absolutely love this car
This is my most favourite spec
I'll take the V8 over 911 in a heart beat! It isn't perfect but that makes it better in my eyes. And it is a damn pretty! My only doubt is roadster or coupe :)
Gorgeous. Perfect ls candidate.
Who's the most famous person who drives an Aston Martin
Ans: Doug Demero
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, Parker. Honestly, if it were twice as long and went even more in depth, I'd have no complaints. Also would love to see full footage of a spirited lap around Road America in this car. If I owned it, I doubt I'd track it much (this is a holy grail GT car for me), but would love to see how it behaves under duress.
Manual trans versions have gone up by $15k in the last year. Lucky me ☺️
Yo is this road america!???
I like this host, he’s like the Linustechtips of this channel. Like his enthusiasm, which a much needed break from some of the other hosts
One of the few cheap exotics that exist atm that I would love to get ahold of and have for a bit.
I kept wondering if I hit the rewind button The kid keeps blurting the same thing over and over again.
you know, at one point I could have sworn there was like 30 seconds that was a verbatim repeat... for a second I thought the sh!thy chromebook was struggling and getting ready to randomly restart itself again.
I was immediately used to the handbrake on my V8 Vantage, funnily enough I was used to it from my first car, a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT.
What happened ta' Daily Drive & Tiffany Stone?
Love it 😀 the manual coupe is the purest, but I also love the roadsters. Some day… 😀 By the way, what track is that? Looks fantastic at that time of year
awesome car, great review!
In 2007, 2008, the smart money went with a $60k E92 M3, V8, 414hp. But the BMW can’t match the looks and prestige of the Aston.
All my life loving de 911, and now at my 40's, when i'm getting close
to afford one, i'm starting to change mi mind!
Needs to be in Aston Martin Racing Green
I’ve owned a manual (silver grey coupe) bmw e46 m3 for 8yrs or so now which currently is close to a csl looks wise, wheels etc blah blah, would this car be worth upgrading too? I’ve always wanted one, thought about one hence why I’m watching another video on it 👏🏻😆
I’m getting one!
I always thought the same about Yamaha versus Ducati's. The Duc's sound amazing. It's like a rotohammer versus a sewing machine.
Can either handle two sets of clubs?
My Vantage can take 2 sets of carry golf bags but not the larger cart golf bags
These are around 22-27k in the uk
Great job
The Aston Martin owner wanted something different, the Porsche owner wanted some residual value
If that’s the case they should have bought a Corolla and spent the extra 60k on gold and would have a quarter million dollars today.
Driving an Aston is an 'Event' . Arriving in style, fashionably late.
Drive an Aston and everyone knows you have class. Compare that to Driving a 911.
Is this one of hagertys kids? A face for radio and a voice for print...
lol, harsh but hilarious.
2022 is the year i get my dream car
Now it’s going to be the price it was when it was new. I’m here while they’re still $30K-$40K.
If you live in the middle of nowhere, like me, I think you do want to drive it to work everyday.
Bro 😢stop telling people this is good value it will get more expensive and I won’t be able to afford it
I can hear Jason Cammisa yelling ''Aston Martin V8 Vantage!'' as I turn the video on
What version of vantage is that. Something special for america? Because vantage hat the sense key aswell.
The car in the review had the sport pack wheels, an upgraded gear shifter from a V12 and looked to ride a little lower on its suspension.
The car precious
Can't drive it in the rain? I'm out. Drove my 997 through a Tropical storm in Louisiana. Didn't leak a drop. The Vantage is dead sexy to look at though.
Should we talk about the clutch?
Yes, when it let's go, get the twin plate upgrade with lightened flywheel which costs a little less than the OEM single plate and also let's the engine rev a little more freely. One of the best upgrades/replacements of a wear part.
Yes the clutch is a wear item , the same as a thrashed 911. It depends entirely on how its driven. Shall we talk about failed IMS bearings on 911?...Ahh..that will be an engine rebuild sir.....
Nobody talks about how much these cars cost to insure or fix when things go wrong, and as with any car, things will go wrong.
$819 a year through Hagerty in 2021. I pay more to insure one of our work vans.
This isn't the Tadek Marek V8 no more ?
Just asking...Has "this" Vantage V8 series ever been powered by AMG engines ?
Possibly the AM - AMG partnership got started
in 2013/2014 but I might be wrong.
Thanks for any info.
With all the comparisons to the Porsche 911 and your mention of a good GT car the Porsche 928 offered the same experience right down to the left side hand brake which also worked the same. So if you still want a Porsche buy a old 928!
If i had a nickel for every time he said "porsche 911" in a video about an aston martin, i'd probably be able to buy one of the damn things.
Nope. Stunning car, wonderful production quality, awful script/presentation. Capitalise on Sam Smith!
Yep this dude is grateing
Do 07 Audi r8
How is this a buyer's guide?
Get Cammisa to do this segment. This guys is insufferable.
i was surprised not to find more comments like this. this guy is terrible.
Its terrible. The first 5 minutes are literally him saying the car sounds good.
