Wow. This whole time I've been doing storybeats. Thats why my "storyboards" didn't feel like it was going from one point to another. And in a children's book my sister and I are working on. I love that method even more ❤️
I usually hear them referred to as Beat Boards. Though to confuse the matter, we often talk about the "beats" in a storyboard sequence- as in "we need to add a board/panel to cover the beat when the character says "time to fly". So a beat can be just a notable moment in time while a Beat Board is more of a single drawing to cover multiple moments in time.
I was making storybeats and didn't realize it wasn't a storyboard portfolio, and wasn't getting any job offers. They did spark intrest in publishers though! Story beats are great for conveying your idea quickly. I think storybeats are great for personal projects. I'm working on actual storyboards now so I can get a job though. lol
Thank you for the great info on story beats! I love all the examples! I might try this next time I start mapping out important scenes for my personal comic work
This was the exact kind of thing i was thinking of when creating a story i was planning on illustrating. I just didn't have a name for it. Now i can gather info on how to do beats properly! I was thinking of also merging some boards in there with the beats to get some of the action shots in.
Very good video, I didn't even know storybeats were a thing! Now with all of your well explained examples I can try to make my own before storyboarding everything, which makes the process easier!
as someone going through a storyboard module in an animation school right now, your videos have helped me out so much! thank you for putting these out! ❤
Thank you for this video! I’ve been wondering how to work on my storyboards, and storybeats sound like the perfect way to get started and get down some of the visuals! I think there’s so much one can learn from just getting some of these beats done first
I think I kind of do a combination of the two. I'm not focused enough to draw out every footstep of every character like storyboard artists do, but I still have more detail than just two or three drawings for a scene.
I've considered doing stuff like this, but having the language to describe it is incredibly useful. I've been struggling to find a reason to make illustrations, being mostly focused on animations lately, leaving my webisites like newgrounds empty and barren in the meantime, but making story beats is a really great excuse to change that.
I don't even know how my mind managed to make that connection and I only noticed afterwards that His Theme started playing in the back of it at around 3:34
In commercials a beatboard really all you do for client presentations. If you show up with a detailed, animation-ready storyboard, the client most of the time will be completely overwhelmed. Plus they can't really abstract enough to understand, that these aren't final drawings.
Great advice and I love your style very whimsical yet grounded... Which since I work with alot of helmeted characters because my influences are video games mostly shooters and stragy games as well as Red Vs blue... I tend to express emotion though overall body motions and dialogue I also tend ot to use cinematic taqiuqes when it comes to color and compassion. As I prefer to tell it like it is and le he aundiince feel the emotiions for themshelves. Which gives my works a realistic feel and brings the audience into the world and gives the feel of being there hanging out with the heroes. Sill thanks for tthe advice of story beats II have to try it sometime!
I appreciate this video immensely!! think I will try this approach to forming my ideas for future story-driven projects. I've always felt stuck because I'm terrible with writing scripts and outlines, which are necessary for storyboards. Storybeats seem like the more intuitive approach for visual/demonstrative learners such as myself :o
A question, it's possible replace the storyboard process with the storybeat or is it still necessary to execute both methods to carry out a good project?
I made a bunch of beats for an ap art class, but sadly most of them have been deleted when my iPad died. I have a few that are printed and a speed paint of one on here though.
I'm not a professional, but I think it would depend on the lengths between story beats. Storyboards are more moment-to-moment, closer to actual animation. story beats seem to be going from critical plot point 2 critical plot point
When making a short film by yourself where would a story eat fit into the process? Would it be before storyboarding or after storyboarding and designing the characters? i don’t see how you would do this before storyboarding and designing the characters because like how would you know what the characters look like?
I think storybeats has elements to animation ques. Toniko Pantoja brought up some, but what if a story's is either Micro or Macro? And what if movement lines have to be expressed ,or time of day? To me: It would be interesting to know what an Animation Consultant would think about the intricate elements of storybeats.
It's a terrific concept! I can utilize AI to produce story beats for my projects as a comic book author and artist... I suppose it's okay because I'm the only one who can see this stage of the process (because I don't want to draw to death only to organize my projects). That can also help me get a solid sense of the story's pacing. Thanks!
940 it is all way too dark. People hate dark films people are not even going to films because of how dark they are because at home they can alter it. Note get everything lighter brighter so that people can see!
Storyboards have a new illustration for when the scene changes - i.e when the 'camera' pov changes, or when new people arrive or for other events like that. Story beats are drawings that encapsulate things like the emotion, atmosphere, general mood etc of larger parts of the story that can span several scenes or more. That's how I took it anyways, hope that helps.

Can we see what you make?
What is the name of the children’s book you’re making? I’m curious to look it up 😮

Woah It's like combine a important frame of a storyboard with a color key. Gives emotion, location, context and provide storytelling, I just wow

You got the job??
YES! your drawings have so much character them it's awesome.
Thank you for the great info on story beats! I love all the examples! I might try this next time I start mapping out important scenes for my personal comic work
The next time I use the word 'sensationalism, I'll remember 'storybeats'. The examples are great like you said!
Thank you for this video. I'm really struggling with storyboarding right now. Cuz I come more from the pov of storybeats when planning for animations.

Once again I have found a great video that gives a VAST amount of time to something new I never heard.
Thank you.

watching this while finishing up a storyboard is great
Thanks for putting this out there, man. I'll definitely be more aware of storybeats in the future and know how to use them.
I think I kind of do a combination of the two.
I'm not focused enough to draw out every footstep of every character like storyboard artists do, but I still have more detail than just two or three drawings for a scene.
Sort of like the scene chapters in a movie menu.
YEA
thats a great explanation!

Genuinely didn't know about this! TYSM
Toniko thank you for free animation classes and advices this really helps
Very interesting. I've been listening to Save the Cat: Writes a novel, and I can see some parallels with the whole beat thing.
I gotta rewatch Croods 2 now, wonderful work and clarification!
Glad I learned this concept, thanks

storybeats
this is the first time I heard about it
needs to study it more
You post your storybeats on your IG occasionally and I love your use of color and composition.
Thanks for the info on story beats

I love this channel man, thank you! 🎉❤
I would LOVE to take a class about storybeats, from you. Take my money!
Thats so cool.

Спасибо за объяснение!! Люблю ваши видео
A question, it's possible replace the storyboard process with the storybeat or is it still necessary to execute both methods to carry out a good project?
storybeats are a good roadmap before boarding out your project, although i have made projects without the use of beats.
@@TonikoPantoja thank you so much Toniko 😀
@@TonikoPantojaDo you make thumbnails of storybeats?
great!
I made a bunch of beats for an ap art class, but sadly most of them have been deleted when my iPad died. I have a few that are printed and a speed paint of one on here though.
I have question, so what's the difference between Storybeats and Image Board?
Niiiiiiice explications !
Whats the difference between a story beat and a keyshot? :u
So, that was the actual name of the “synopsis drawings” I was doing unconsciously for my story
aww RIP to the tiger film
Wahoo!
How many storyboards are the equivalent to one story beat? I haven’t had much practice with either, but I want to learn.

Or maybe should i be doing character designing first?
I think my art history teacher said they made story beats in renaissance art work
thanks Chad!
Storybeats? Never heard about it
nice
Can they be considered color keys too?
No, color keys serve a different purpose

Story-Beats Storyboard
That was a good one 😏
How would you storyboard a dance animation?

Storyboards are important on productions with dozens to hundreds of animators which is something you dont really see since the golden age
Hi, I have a question! I don’t fully understand how a storybeat differs from just regular illustration. What’s the main difference between the two?
not all illustration and drawing are story based.
Can you make a cartoon that takes place in a park in Alabama or calorado
👍
why are they called beats
940 it is all way too dark. People hate dark films people are not even going to films because of how dark they are because at home they can alter it. Note get everything lighter brighter so that people can see!
where is a dream bandits? wtf bro

oki 👍
First, To your mother!

Okay, I couldn’t get the difference, sorry

I'm sorry i don't get the story " BEATS " part ?... why not calling them " EVENTS " ? are they not EVENTS ? Please help with this
Such a useful and inspiring episode. Got me in the mood to get up and keep storyboarding but I should be asleep rn 🤣🤎💜💙
Sorry for accidentally disliking :(
