Friend of mine who works with journalism told me a few things about this.
It’s very common for game’s journalism to be treated as an entry level position, something you do to get some experience while looking for a better position. Alot of people who get into video game journalism do so because they have no other choise and some people can become incredibly bitter over it. This explains why it feels like so many journalists have zero clue about what they are talking about and many of their articles feel like a sunmary of what a wiki could have told you.
It’s a sad side product of how the industry works sadly.

    • @Temperans

That honestly explains a lot of why the articles are written so badly. If its made by a newb or someone that is outright spiteful of having to write those articles then no wonder they would do a bad job.

Truly I've seen people try to portray their game as "inclusive" and "diverse" meanwhile they don't even do the bare minimum in accessibility options or give black character literally 1 choice of haircut compared to the rest and every character looks like the exact same model.
Not what I would call diverse and inclusive by any standard but I guess they do. And some people might dislike the game exactly because they think there's too much diversity from just that.
It just doesn't mean anything at this point, it's just marketing talk.
There's a few games that could be considered diverse that were a hit regardless because at the end of the day even the annoying racists just want a good game. That's what we all want. If a game gets a bad marketing reputation like that but it's insanely good and everyone plays it, recommends it and it gets well rated. Eventually the racists will probably play it and if it's good they might keep playing it and pretend they weren't upset about it in the first place.

So, some of my favorite series were pretty diverse, and some might even say "woke" (the expanse novels come to mind). But here are some of my thoughts about where diversity-centric design often runs into issues.
    1. Diversity doesn't always make sense. There are people (often games journalists) who play a game where the setting is based off of another culture (say, the Witcher 3) and complain that there aren't enough black people. Guess what guys, not all countries are melting pot countries, and have the same racial makeup as America. And, from a global perspective, if every country was like these melting pot countries, the world would actually be a hell of a lot less diverse.
    2. On race/gender swapping characters, I immediately think of Starbuck from the Battlestar Galactica reboot. They made the character a woman, and it worked really well. But this is a double standard, and a lot people dislike those. If you made a black character white, or a female character male in one of these mainstream movies/tv series, there would likely be an outcry. So I think people push back against it in principle, either its always okay or its never okay. And I also think on a fundamental level, changing a characters race/sex takes you a step away from the source material, and a lot of people prefer adaptations be faithful to the source material.
    3. Diversity doesn't improve bad writing. My example for this will be Frey from Forspoken (a shallow character with cringe dialogue). I feel like people are used to seeing these shallow diverse characters, and they overgeneralize that experience. So, when you have a firm, like SBI, that effectively lobbies for the inclusion of token diversity characters within a plot (and receives ESG money for doing so) these characters aren't being crafted from a place of inspiration, they're written and added into the story solely to chase after material gains. Shallow motivation leads to writing a shallow character.
    4. People at these companies are often their own worst enemies, they behave irresponsibly and get themselves (and their companies) into trouble (and in many cases, these individuals are actually in leadership roles at their companies). Saying that you can't be racist against white people, drumming up a harassment campaign against a legitimate consumer boycott of their products, and the journalists deliberately omit context and only report on facts that suit their preferred narrative... These people see themselves as crusaders, fighting an imaginary race war. They're extremists, and hold many ignorant and prejudicial views themselves, but completely lack self-awareness, it’s pathetic.

"Woke" has a vague definition on purpose but I don't think the expanse counts as woke. Things like civil rights and radical ideas aren't "woke". It's a very specific subset of ideas pushed by companies like Blackrock and Vanguard, special interest groups and non government organizations (NGO) like the Soros "Open Society". When you look at the people pushing the message, don't be mistaken - they are simply puppets. Follow the strings.

Personally, I also feel that the "diversity" tag that is thrown here and there is an afterthought. Similar to a pre-emptive defense for when the product is bad and badly reviewed "Oh, you dont like our product because you are - xyz". I have also seen this in construction projects where a bad concept with frankly stupid ideas and out of control budget, got a last minute tag of "Carbon footprint" which was utter @@. Then when the project "architects" were faced with backlash from the client and the community, they kept throwing around buzz was words like Carbon footprint, green energy etc to justify a bad idea and an expensive, completely non-environmentally friendly project. And I also feel that most people dont like the "diversity" factor in games because it is so so so poorly implemented. Generic characters, boring script and overall bad and bland writing. As if....all of it was last minute implemented as an afterthought. And if consumers dont like it, the defense presented to the shareholders (because the consumer will just not buy it) is "oh they dont like our product because people dont understand diversity. But YOU as a the big boss knows better right? So please dont fire me and also give me more money for the next project". Possibly a stretch but I can definitely imagine it.

It's projecting guilt onto the other party so they don't have to admit that they fucked up, pissed off everyone and are now reaping what they've sown.
Sweet Baby Inc. threw a bitch fit over someone simply deciding to make it easier for others to know when they were involved in a game. If they were at all proud of what they're doing, they should've taken this as a compliment, but instead, an employee decided to try to harass the people telling others about their involvement in games into quitting what they were doing.
Sweet Baby Inc. was indeed the instigator and initial harasser, but when they got burned playing with fire, they decided to blame the fire instead. It also doesn't help that what they do is something that only people who don't play videogames want, which is racist tokenization for the most part, and more often than not their involvement is tied to games' stories being utter garbage.
Beyond the whole racism thing they've got going on, I'm actually offended as an actual writer. I spent years building up to the point that I could get people to pay me to write, and I spend hours, days, weeks and even months on a 5000 word commission in order to make sure it's ready, and I guaran-damn-tee these jokers with zero writing skill get paid in a single month more than I make all year just because a brainless executive wants to "appeal to a wider audience" via tokenization and thus hires these talentless hacks to butcher their videogame.

Their entire character, their entire being is 'look at me, I'm trans, trans is my entire personality and I exist in this product only to be trans and to make a statement about being trans'. It's shit writing, like Kira says, but it's also shit writing that highlights the tokenized minority and makes it far more obvious than generic shit writing where people will only go 'yeah, it was bad'. If you hate all of these identity politics in video, stop buying those video games. Companies will 100% stop this nonsense when their bottom line is effected. It is true that Sweet Baby is a symptom, not the disease and that's worth stressing.
That said, Sweet Baby is in particular worthy of some focus, giving their past Tweets, statements, video conferences etc.
Perhaps you are aware but from what I've heard, the Brazilian guy who runs the group was actually aware there are other consultation groups that are involved in making the same kind of changes but he stated it was too much work to track multiple companies as it was hard enough to track just one company considering he's just one dude, which is understandable.
What really bothers me is we now have this bizarre situation that a Brazilian critiquing a Canadian company was harassed by people from said company, with a media complex that decided he and his group was guilty of harassing that company for posting the same game list Sweet Baby proudly displays on their site and that somehow it was related to the 2024 election because it's Gamergate 2.0
It also breaks their own mindset of "don't punch down" but I'm not terribly surprised given their comments.
As for the consultation thing, it's definitely the case the game developers are the ones at fault but it's also the case Sweet Baby has revealed it prefers to get involved at the beginning of the development process and it's logically going to be the case they can shape the game far more by being involved early.
It's like a bonsai tree, you can't do too much if it's fully grown except snip things off, but if you are involved at the start you can twist it into any form.
You are right that the choice to take their advice is down to the developer but we also know consultants are seen as "experts" and as such, who is the game developer to refute them?
When we factor in Sweet Babys comments about "If they won't give you want put the fear of God into them about a potential backlash" (paraphrasing) then it's my opinion they are more often than not manipulating the developers with fear and the expertise card, so they are in my opinion partially responsible.
Unless you have a very strong will and something backing your view up, you aren't going to be able to have a credible counter stance that your bosses will accept as a reason to ignore said advice.
As for the SS game, I agree, it was mechanically bad but it's also the case that Sweet Baby wrote thousands of lines of dialogue for it.
Essentially, making a bad thing even worse.
You offer the best advice, which is, vote with your wallet and I support that mindset, which is why I support the Detector group as if they want to vote not buy things en masses, that's their right.
It would be better to list all organisations if they were going to do that but as outlined that's a monumental task (which might be possible with the numbers the group now has)
It's just, you can see the Detector group as trying to put into practice the "vote with your wallet" mantra and the response has been bizarre, perhaps because they realise it's going to wreck their gig.
Luckily we seem to agree on the vast majority of the issues involved and the remedies to it and hope you understand my disagreements.

The thing is sweet baby inc may do nothing in reality just a way to get DEI investment. But the point that 99% of people have just like the steam curator is that sweet baby inc is the canary that says game will be bad. It's like when the marketing talks about "modern audiences" or how diverse/many women made the product.
You know it's bad because the marketing team couldn't find something actually good in what they are selling to talk about. Or in the case of sweet baby you know the story has been butchered by so many committees that there was no real artistic vision.

Like, I don't need to know what the original script was to know I wasn't entertained by having to listen to Mary Jane try to villainize Peter and have him apologize the entire time for nothing he did wrong (choosing to be a hero and save lives), all just so Sweet Baby Inc can make a straight white male look like an awful person compared to the female character. I'm not even a straight white male and I can see how Sweet Baby Inc has influenced the game to be a worse experience. I'm not defending those people either, I'm just saying it's not a "campaign by gamers" as if it's a unified force of hatred, it's a very small group of gamers who get a bee in their bonnet about specific things which most gamers couldn't give less of a damn about.
I for example didn't care if Palworld used AI or not, nor do I actually own or have played the game, although I have watched some and it's on my wishlist so maybe one day. In some sense, this is an example of the "forced diversity". Also, you claim that sweet baby doesn't barge in and say "Hey make that white man brown!" When you take a short clip of someone's presentation at a conference where the clip starts in the middle and ends not at the end, you're taking the thing out of the context in which it was created. Therefor, you're taking it "out of context" as it's describe in English. Which part is unclear, I'm not sure how better I can explain the concept, I believed we all knew what it means.

As far as I have read / watched on this, this isn't abnout diversity but out of place diversity.
When characters throw stange lines that break the 3rd wall or the plot / story has holes because they seemingly changed things last minute.
There will always be people who're racist etc. but most people just don't like things being changed in a way that doesn't fit the setting etc.
Sure if the story is good and some stuff is misplaced it will still be a good game. But it still can be annoying. It won't be a Witcher (Series) case where after Henry Cavill left it fell off.. but especially because of stuff like Witcher people these days will see such inserts that don't fit well as warning signs that the next title in the series might have even more and more stuff in it that doesn't benefit the series because it isn't done well but overly blunt.
Oh and yeah as you mentioned.. SB having people actively being racist themselves etc. probably was the biggest catalyst why people started blaming them for everything.
    @16:45
I can't really agree that sweetbaby was just "some advisor" and the people hiring them should take most of the blame.
The number of games with strange out of place characters, lines or even whole plot arcs they were involved with is just too high and has a similar "handwriting" to them. It at least for me felt like they were pushing their own views and their customer was just like "if you say so". Sure the company hiring them has to take some blame. But SB was likely hired to bring in diversity that fits the narrative and product as a whole.
I mean when you hire an expert you expect that expert to do a good job and that includes telling you what is and what is not a good idea.
When your electic guy tells you it is fine to touch those cables because he is certain they are fine and then you get electrocuted.. I mean sure you got some fault.. but.. you know.. he was the expert..
To me this feels similar to the translator issue with Anime in the US.
Sure the company that pays those translators should really stop hiring them. But the translators just changing the meaning of stuff, inserting out of place lines, is just not right.
PS: I've worked for several bigger IT (not gaming) companies and PR related consultants usually are called in for being able to pin the badge onto a product / company. Nobody in the management really cares much for how much sense it makes most of the time. And if you point out obvious flaws with what the consultant advices as project lead or below your "opinion" is heard and more often ignored since you're not an expert.

  • @ILikeGoodFood

Something they're obviously and intentionally ignoring is that when a movie or video game turns a character that was black, or of some other non-caucasian demographic, in the source material into a caucasian person, the exact same reaction occurs.
Scarlet Johanson's lead roll in Hollywood's live action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is a great, and relatively recent, example of this. She was broadly considered to be, by fans of the original work, the wrong person for the job, because she wasn't Japanese.

My favourite take thus far. I suppose I have always felt like Kira's mind works in much the same as mine does. The controversy has only blown up into Gamergate 2 because they poured gasoline on the fire. People are always going to clip what you said online to get insight or make a point about your views, often out of context. But even if its within a certain context, if you believe what you say, then what do you care? SBI put a target on their back when chris kindred advocated a harrassment campaign against the curation list creator, and the racist Steam post on the group against white male gamers. If as a company CEO you can't see why that would be a problem and deal with it, or worse yet, are seen to endorse that position, then of course that's where the problem is. That's when you don't just have the internet crazies coming after you, but instead offend every single person you consider within that group of people, many of which are in fact diverse. Add on top of that, acting as though you are blameless, media outlets pushing a one-sided and provably false narrative, using straw-man arguments and unproven conspiratorial connections to further that narrative without a lick of sited proof.
It's all a farce anyways since the media sites WANT this to be another Gamergate, as that kind of controversy means more subject matter to farm to generate more traffic to their sites. That in turn gives them the opportunity to amplify the issue further, and allows them to tie in political hot button topics that are there for no other reason than to fuel the fire further. If its just one issue, then its spoken on, floats in public consciousness for a time, and fades off. If you can tie it to some ongoing political controversy, well then you can just keep farming the issue, well past the point it should have just died away.

Well this time we might actually have a shot, because along the truth, which is pretty strong, we also have left leaning people "Inside the zone" (Western US, Democrat Cities) like Mutahar coming out and calling them out. Also their senior members with their comments about who can and can't be racist.

You summed it up so well, i agree 100%. Nice to hear someone who is reasonable like most of us gamers actually are.

I would say the main source of their hatred for gamers is the fact that they took out massive loans to overpay for university to get their fancy degree in journalism, then go to a big publication and go dig out some groundbreaking news stories and do actual journalism... But in the end the only job they could land was talking about video games at places like kotaku and polygon.

On "you can't be racist against white people", I was born in ussr and upon its collapse I ended up in one of Central Asian countries. At a time there were roughly 40% "ethnically russian" people living there. We then got nationalisation laws that denied anyone of Russian/soviet descent to be able to get public sector jobs, we literally had "ethnic background" field in passports that would say things like "Russian", "armenian" and so on. Is that not racist? Is me being physically assaulted on streets for being of a wrong ethnic background not racist? (BTW by the time I left there were around 3% ethnically russian people left due to the laws etc). I'm one of those lgbt people that Alyssa and Sh!tbaby should pander to but this is ridiculous. I don't want to play a relatable gay spider man (as an example), I want to play spider man that inspires me, or at least is fun. If I want a relatable spider man, I make one in fucкing sims. Why is it so difficult to understand? They are so overwriting this bs its ridiculous.

That is specifically a US argument friend. It doesn't apply to people outside of the US. It still isn't right though, it's an argument against institutional racism specifically for conversations in the US. Of course it doesn't make sense outside of that scope, because white people have been oppressed in other countries. But not the US. Sadly a lot of the internet is involved around the US so conversations like this lead way to confusion and from people outside of the US.

cause game journalists are just paid game advertisers. But also, capital G gamers are also a cancer, so I could ultimately do without both of them

7:30 - "The noise only increased. _'You made this character black, you made this character gay, or you ruined this story,'_ Belair says of the comments, the tone of which, she adds, never changed." -- So! "Tones" considered _equivalent_ by Kim Belair; 1. racist, 2. homophobic, 3. _didn't like what we did with the story..._

As a cyst straight black man, I feel like most people are accepting of me and my community. However I feel like most people are not accepting of the LGBT community. The people that are supportive are overrepresented in Media.
Sentiment against the lgbtq community is extremely high.
It would be very naive to assume that most people diversity
