Super cool man! I have a 2000 X-R 650R that I bought brand new in 2000. Countless miles in the sand and mountains. Just went through the engine and transmission. They are so overbuilt. Love the old Baja race movies with the X-R at top speed, well over 100 mph. Also have the 2005 CRF 450X that I bought new for comparison when someone wants to “bench race”. I’m 60 now and love the electric start of the 450. Both bikes still bring back wonderful memories and have a great heritage. Isn’t that really what it’s all about? The old saying goes; that the experience is the same no matter your level of riding skill. Just being part of something that cool, XR water cooled goodness is worthwhile. Thank you!
Nice build. I was looking for a plated 650R here in Cali but they are too hard to find. During my search I stumbled upon the DR-650 which I never really considered. Found a 1 year old DR with 2000 miles on the clock with some nice mods. Modded the crap out of it even more with a 790 big bore, installed oversize valves, CRF 42 pumper carb, large front/mid-pipe with a Gixxer Ti muffler and a wide ratio Nova gearbox, Cogent shock and springs and a ton of other mods plus it's got an electric start. I can also convert it over to a supermoto. Most fun bike I ever owned. If you can't find an 650R consider a DR
@@vernlochtefeld1626 I was planning on putting is on the dyno but the shop is all booked-up in advance. A DR-790 in this config usually puts down between 55 and 60 hp with equal measure in torque. A KTM 690 is still way faster but the DR is a grunt monster and it's not a KTM 🤣
@scottloftin1730 How so? Actually, the DR is the closes match to an XR as anything on the market today. The KLR is a dual sport but is more of an Adventure bike being 100 lbs heavier than either the XR or the DR.
@scottloftin1730 I'm not so sure an XR-650R will outrun a KTM-690 which is one fast bike having ridden one. My heavily modded DR won't get near it in an all out race. But I'll take an XR or a DR over a KTM any day. I can adjust the valves in 20 minutes with just a few hand tools. Trying that on a KTM will take you a weekend LOL.

FYI.. I learned riding my XR650L on the street, a little over 20,000 MIi the hammer thump of that piston cracks the frame around the swing arm, I got very tired of custom welding the POS, my friends call it the interstate, I would ride it 100 miles then head off road and blast.fun times
Very nice. I have a 2000 XR600R with 300 miles on it. On occasion will ride it around the property. It lives in the garage out of the sun (looks brand new).
Outstanding. What a combination of an amazing bike and a big budget production with music. The 40 and 50 degree temps are not familiar to me at this time. It took all day Saturday to get up to 6 degrees but today we're shooting for 20 degrees but the wind isn't helping. I used to have one. I never had to kick a bike so much. Only the first start of the day. After that it was good. I never could work that out. I got many many miles out of mine.

my wife's 02 is having carb issues. So I tore the bike down and it's just trash in the carb and the lower throttle cable was frayed. I kinda knew but still a good excuse to buy a lectron and put my brp carb on hers. Anyway since I had to pulled the carb I decided well just get it street legal and uncork it lol
Man this makes me miss my 2001 XR 650R plated bike! Should've kept it... Love my 450RL though... so I'll be okay lol... Get a beefier front tire on that bike! At least just for looks lol...
All that engine work and tuning, what kind of numbers does this thing put up? I always thought a well tuned race built 650r could be as about as powerful numbers wise as a 2 stroke 500. obviously it's not as light of a bike but these things are nothing but potential, seeing how they won so many races. I also love the Honda bullet proof 4stroke engine on these. It really is the "they don't make em like this anymore" bike from Honda
I can assure you, they’re nothing like a 500! A 500 is like a bomb waiting to explode! You can hear the difference just on idle. I know because I raced 2 of them. My 98’ set a speed record of 104 mph..in 400 ft!! Let’s see an xr do that! Beautiful bike though and one of Hondas best!

And all honesty most was just unnecessary crap on the bike , and personally I think in stock form the rear fender is absolutely hideous and it’s first thing I change lolol ugly bikes in factory form lol U be surprised once u rip out all the stock exhaust and fully uncorke it plus few cuts here and there bike lightens up quick 💪🫡 There’s a short on my channel you can see the bike , I’ll have to post an actual video on it when I get a chance brother .
Beautiful XR, I hope the customer did some suspension upgrades to it as those models lack in that department, that expensive trip meter won't last long with that plastic universal mount, the billet guard and mount is money well spent, those are good bikes and getting hard to find, nice job on the build it looks better than new.
I forgot to mention in the video but yes the suspension is fully built for him, we don’t do suspension so he had a suspension specific shop do all that. So far the plastic mount has held up but it only has a couple rides on it, if it fails we’ll definitely upgrade it! Thanks for tuning in and XR‘s rule!!!
Ya, that Vapor won't last one over the bars. Get the aluminum guard/ mount or mount it below the handlebars to one side (mine was on the throttle side down low). I ran one forever that way and only broke the plastic mount once.
Nice vid man..Love the 650R ,had mine since 2000 and I'll never sell it..I gotta say what a bunch of ..sses in the comments about the starting..If you know ass from a hole in the ground about the 650R you'll know it has 2 compression releases stock,stick another cam besides the HRC upgraded cam (which you could no longer buy years ago)and you're left with only the the one at that bar..put just a high comp piston in it and it's a different ball game starting the pig, nevermind a 700 cc,so instead of trashing the guy be thankful a fellow enthusiast is making vids of classic and have some damn respect

Everybody has an opinion, even if they don’t have any source of knowledge lol This was also when we first got it together and after a little bit of break in we realized that the clutch it was slipping on starting and we had to address that. When going to the extremes there’s always going to be a couple hiccups. Not something I would do for one of my personal bikes but when somebody throws a stack of cash at you and says they want most power regardless of reliability it’s kind of fun.
That was one reason I gave up my XR250R. It ran amazing but you had to get things right on the first kick or two otherwise you would be there for 5 minutes and out of breath by the time it got going. Especially when warm. My next off road bike will definately have electric start.

Man I love my 650r but it SERIOUSLY hates this new ethanol gas. Carb puking so much again it won't start. Just leaves a trail Greta would despise (before it stopped). Question bro...I'm getting sick of rebuilding this carb so are Lectrons worth it and do they tolerate ethanol laced go-juice?
How did you get the computer to stay on constantly? I run one on my bike and I have the Baja Designs stator rewind, but for some reason mine likes to flicker at idle and will not stay on constant

@@paulwatson5965 everybody has different budgets and when you have a ton of money you spend it on what you want not what is considered “smart”. I’m sure the same argument could be made for people who spend $50,000 on a old Camaro instead of spending $45,000 on a brand new one that has three times the power and does everything way better.
It’s a totally different engine. I know there’s a company that makes a set up for my CR500r but it’s 2k, not sure if they make one for the 650r yet though.

When you’re ready for serious power you should ditch that stupid carburetor and go with a Sudco FCR it’s The best performance mod I ever done to my bike I’ve had the electron the jetted stock carb and neither one would hold a candle to the FCR41
I have had 2 lectrons on my xr650r motard and I was not happy with either of them, the 2nd one was an improvement however with dirt rims it ran great. It just couldn't deal with the extra load at low rpm with the motard, and I tried every adjustment possible even fitted a wideband guage to be sure. Now I am back to the FCR and I will never go back. I have a lectron on my 2 stroke and it is the best thing even, I wish I could have said the same about there xr650r carb for motard setup, hopefully they can do more R&D and get it right
@@johndunn9819 nope, they ran the stock carb a little rich to match the performance upgrades. The only real reason for a lectron is avoid needing to adjust for elevation. If you aren't doing that I wouldn't recommend it and I say that as a XR650R Owner with a lectron on it. But I ride the rocky mountains and chose the lectron as caution for the several thousand feet of elevation change the bike would need to handle. That said, the stock carb tuned for high elevation performed great. It was just difficult to start at home because it was slightly too lean in order to perform at high elevation, even though it ran great once warmed up. The lectron made it easy to start and still handle elevation changes without issue.
How can you be that bad at starting an XR?? I’ve had an XR 650R for almost 20 years and whether it’s 2 days or 2 months between starts it fires first kick every time. Ignition switch off - choke up - decompression lever in - kick over 10 times (no throttle) - ignition on - decompression lever out and find top dead center - decompression lever in and position the piston just past top dead center - decompression lever out and bring the kick starter back to the top of its travel - then jump on it! It will fire first time every time!🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂ If you do it correctly you will never get kick back either. Starting it the way you did you’re just lucky this bike has auto decompression to prevent it.

It's always been faster. Just not lighter. I've pulled many a holeshots on my xr. At least before second gear is used up.

A stock bike makes about 43 hp and I’m guessing this one is in the high 50’s
That Vapor will last about 30 mins on that little plastic arm before it snaps, at least from my experience.

Your Kickstarte procedure needs some work. Missing one little kick down and letting up on the kicker, before you kick all the way down.

They used to make two different models. The L is the air cooled Street version, and the R is a liquid cooled, off-road monster!

I have had 2 lectrons on my xr650r motard and I was not happy with either of them, the 2nd one was an improvement however with dirt rims it ran great. It just couldn't deal with the extra load at low rpm with the motard, and I tried every adjustment possible even fitted a wideband guage to be sure. Now I am back to the FCR and I will never go back. I have a lectron on my 2 stroke and it is the best thing even, I wish I could have said the same about there xr650r carb for motard setup, hopefully they can do more R&D and get it right

@@johndunn9819 nope, they ran the stock carb a little rich to match the performance upgrades.
The only real reason for a lectron is avoid needing to adjust for elevation. If you aren't doing that I wouldn't recommend it and I say that as a XR650R Owner with a lectron on it. But I ride the rocky mountains and chose the lectron as caution for the several thousand feet of elevation change the bike would need to handle.
That said, the stock carb tuned for high elevation performed great. It was just difficult to start at home because it was slightly too lean in order to perform at high elevation, even though it ran great once warmed up. The lectron made it easy to start and still handle elevation changes without issue.

How can you be that bad at starting an XR?? I’ve had an XR 650R for almost 20 years and whether it’s 2 days or 2 months between starts it fires first kick every time.
Ignition switch off - choke up - decompression lever in - kick over 10 times (no throttle) - ignition on - decompression lever out and find top dead center - decompression lever in and position the piston just past top dead center - decompression lever out and bring the kick starter back to the top of its travel - then jump on it! It will fire first time every time!🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂ If you do it correctly you will never get kick back either. Starting it the way you did you’re just lucky this bike has auto decompression to prevent it.
I’m glad that you’re so good at starting yours… This is only a high compression almost 700cc engine so it might behave just a bit different lol
