Bill is SO vastly underrated, and she and Nardole as companions make me wish there was a season between the Riversong and Dr. Mysterio specials, so that we had them sooner and this would be their 2nd season!! Three good friends, No Shipping, who support and care for each other!

Paula "this is a trick he's testing her"
Paula a few minutes later "oh my God I can't believe he tricked me"
Just goes to show how good capaldi is that you know he's throwing you for a loop and you still get wrapped up in it.

It is definitely not perfect. The Mummy Trilogy started strong and ended mediocre and there have been some weak episodes like the crow one in two weeks. Same goes for Bill's character, who had probably some of the best pilot episode and introductions in years, but also ended up being very shallow and unimaginative. You have probably the best finale in whole NuWho history, but at the same time quality has been jumping through the whole season. It shows the decline for the show that followed us through seasons 11 and 12.
I think nowadays people aknowledge it more, especially with how contrasting Chibnail's run has been, but when it came out it was considered as end of the NuWho.

@@mjm3091 Oh don't get me wrong, there's problems in every series, this one no exception, and everyone's problem with certain series' are different. The next 2 episodes in this series are pretty meh at best. This series to me, has a strong start and middle, with Thin Ice, Oxygen, Extremis, and The Pilot being the strongest ones, and an average 7-10, then a brilliant 11 and 12.
I think calling this series the start of the decline is very harsh on it. Personally, what came after from Chibnell was dull, unimaginative, and heartless. Series 11-13 to me, is poor to put it as best as I can, from the writing to the Doctor to the companions to the episodes, and there's unfortunately very few that I "like", so maybe that's why Series 10 seems so far ahead or so far detached from "the decline" that 11-13 gave us because of my disliking of the Chibnell era.

Season 10 is by far Moffat's best for Capaldi and he has such chemistry with Pearl Mackie. Even though this three-parter was a mid-season slump for me, it still has some terrific moments and goes to show how good the other stories are.
Can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the season and if Paula's existential crisis comes to fruition.

I thought season 10 was a big improvement from the last couple seasons. Felt more down-to-earth. The Doctor being a professor at a university as his day job is pretty cool. Missy at her peak as friend/foe. Nordole is kind of like Doctor Who’s Alfred. Bill is such a breath of fresh air as a companion. No chance of romantic feelings! It’s the first time since the start of series 7 I felt like every main character was likable.

The first 10 minutes of this episode has the makings of not just a great episode, but an absolute classic. The whole exploration of this dystopian world under a race of alien dictators was really interesting, and I especially love the focus on propaganda and "fake news" to control the population, which draws a lot of great comparisons to George Orwell's 1984. I loved the whole aspect of Bill trying to keep a grip on her memories of reality, and teaming up with Nardole to try and rescue the Doctor from his role as the Monks' propaganda puppet. Everything's teed up for "The Lie of the Land" to ace it, and as soon as we get to the confrontation on the prison ship, everything starts falling to pieces.
It's a pretty well-done scene, the direction, score, and performances do a great job at selling the drama, but most of it gets undercut when you realise that the Doctor's faking it all. And once the ruse has been uncovered and the Doctor's back in the narrative, the episode turns into a bog-standard "save the world from the alien invaders" storyline, with a checklist of all the worst aspects of the Moffat era - weird tonal shifts, cheap fake-out moments, a wasted supporting cast, and a rushed conclusion that resolves everything with "the power of love". And that's not getting into the rest of the episode's major flaws, from the complete squandering of the initial premise, to the Monks turning into a complete non-entity and non-threat, to the Doctor's weirdly out-of-character and callous behaviour - sure, I'll traumatise my best friend as part of a cruel prank, and let hundreds and thousands of people get imprisoned or killed in the meantime, but sacrificing Bill to save the world is where I draw the line. Between his behaviour in this episode, and his callous dismissal of O'Donnell's death in "Before the Flood", I'm starting to think that Toby Whithouse doesn't really get the Twelfth Doctor.
It's a shame that the Monk trilogy ultimately had to end on such a damp squib of an episode; "Extremis" was a brilliant episode, and for all it's faults "Pyramid" had set us up for a really strong conclusion that sadly never came. There's some really solid and creative ideas here, and the central performances, especially Capaldi and Mackie, are really strong, but it all feels like wasted potential. It's a shame really, Toby Whithouse was one of my favourite writers for the show for a long time, to the point where I was championing him to be Moffat's successor as showrunner, so it's doubly disappointing to get such a weak episode from him

I was initially excited for the current run, but the atrocious writing beat that out of me really quick. I've seen the first two series, but after both of them left me disappointed, I never bothered with the rest. Figured I'd wait and see who the next showrunner is. RTD is fine, but I would have preferred Moffat coming back.

I find that I'm enjoying season 10 more with your reactions then I did when I initially watched. This has been one of the seasons that was weaker, for me personally. I just didn't feel invested this season. Maybe after everything that went down with Clara and then finally having a real goodbye for River, my emotional connection to the story was just stretched too thin. I dunno. But I am enjoying it more. I like Bill well enough, she's interesting to say the least and I always love the queer rep. And Nardole is a joy. But story wise... I'm enjoying it more but I am still not all that invested. I feel like I feel for season 10 the way Paula felt a couple seasons back - enjoying it but not very emotionally invested in whats happening.

I'm not a fan of the last two parts of this Monk three-parter, really bogs down this season in general. Especially as Oxygen and Extremis were great episodes, it kind of evaporates the momentum it was building. (But they definitely salvage it in the remainder, to keep that as vague as possible).

'Lie of the Land" is such a frustrating episode for me b/c it comes so close to being a brilliant episode only to be completely spoiled by the absolute crap resolution. I hate when, as sometimes happens in new who, the monster is defeated through the 'power of love/friendship/family' rather than the Doctor being clever. This ep is a perfect example.
