All the foreshadowing of the book is fulfilled here: mental health, loneliness, friendship, death and killing for the right reasons, Weak vs Strong; all make an appearance in the final scene.
It begins with an odd bit in which Lennie's other "personalities" we never hear nor see from during the rest of the novel appear. I believe they do so in order to illustrate how an idiot-savant / asperger-autistic type individual like Lennie think and the fixations they can have; NOT that he necessarily has schizophrenia. But that is open to interpretation.
George finds him in the brush where he told him to hide and as the voices of the man-hunt get nearer, he tells Lennie to look across to the mountains and imagine a happy scene. It is revealed George took Carlson's Luger pistol and pulls it out, shooting Lennie in the back of the head as he shouts happily about the rabbits he will get to tend one day.
Slim, in his infinite knowledge and perspective, knows the whole story and comforts George after he had to shoot his best friend in the head to save him. Carlson ends the book with a comment that should make us consider, really, what this whole book is about: Perspective. He says, more in ignorance than heartlessness: "Now what the hell ya' suppose is eatin' them two guys?"
Themes to consider: Perspective. Dreams are not always attained, that is part of life. Suffering is part of life, not the end of life. Bonds of Friendship.

This is one morbid book to be assigned in high =school and it is way to close to the end of the school year for me to be having a massive moral dilemma over an 11th grade SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT.
Now I'm scared to finish my summer reading 😭

When Carlson says what the hell you suppose is eating them two guys? So he says because he never had a attachment to anyone or even loved someone 🤔? Can someone tell me what they think about that last line in the book?
Since he owns a Luger p08 pistol, he could possibly have been a German officer vet in ww1 and probably lost his humanity due to seeing the horror of soldiers dying.
Edit: Something I forgot to say, not just because he saw a lot of horrific things happen in battles but also that he probably never got therapy. Due to the time being, shell shock was looked at as cowardice in ww1 so because he never had it treated, he probably felt that he had no reason to show care for a living soul
that’s a good observation
The novella is set in a harsh, uncaring and gruelling society, where jobs were scarce, money was low and prices were high. Carlson, having spent at least 7 years living like this, has most likely forgotten how to be compassionate like this, just like most of society at the time, and it could be this lack of understanding that Steinbeck has chosen to attack with this line.
I'm assuming the end of the book, kinda subtly pits that Slim knew what George did, that he had the gun the whole time, and that he knew he was going to be the one to do it, and Carson just thought that both of them were upset for no reason. But that's just my guess

Read all your audiobooks for my homework and it helped me understand and the voices u out for each character is so good the book was great but such a uncalled for ending. I thought it was gonna have a ending when they achieved there dream

I'm so happy I'm not alone. I'm almost hyperfixated on this (ADHD), and i felt like crying about the ending. I don't know if im understanding it correctly, but george didn't want to kill lennie. I felt so bad for George. And lennie. Lennie just wanted to take care of the rabbits
