I'm a relatively new Primus fan but I have to say Claypool is one of the most talented people I've ever seen. Everything from his musical prowess to his artistic vision is superb!
***** You don't just learn to play dozens of musical instruments, becoming what MANY people believe to be the greatest bass-player of his time, and even go so far as to build your own instrument from scratch (i.e., the Whamola) for "teh lolz". He doesn't do what he does for shits and giggles. Dude is a seriously gifted and multi-talented musician who's been perfecting his craft for decades. What looks like smooth and effortless playing is the culmination of literally DECADES of work, practice and pursuing his profession.
I have 2 favorite shows of theirs Ive seen, First time doing mushrooms in San Francisco Halloween night concert that was life changing, very close second if not tied was Gogol Bordello opening for them with a pretty generously long set before Primus. Those shows will stay in my head for a while.
I saw the same performance when he came to Denver a year or two ago. Amazing. The percussionists behind him made my jaw drop. The one on the left was playing drums and xylaphone at the same time. I see him every chance I get.
Absolutely unSTOMPable; the Claypool TRAIN in motion! Grand filming. Enjoyed this. Have seen Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains Band (2X), Primus (1X), & Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade Band (3X). Hope to see Oysterhead live someday.
Man, just when I think I’ve seen these guys do it all - they blow my mind again - and not just a little bit :) pure talent and insanely entertaining. Mr. Claypool is indeed the EPITOME of cool. Will be a fan for life. ✌️❤️🇨🇦
HAHA!!! THIS MADE ME LAUGH BECAUSE IT'S SO ACCURATE. HE'S THAT GOOD TOO THAT HE CAN PLAY A FUCKING STICK. Which one the 18 bands was this show with because he's played the...."WHAMOLA" with both Fearless Frog Brigade and also with Primus. I think it would be cool if he had different versions of the song with different bands.
@@scandalchannel4671 There are a few, but you have to realize how much of an acquired taste that Les is. There's a very good amount of disco bass players, funk, jazz and fusion players on par with Les, but not many. Les is without a doubt on a level above many musicians. His mind must be always racing and he just has to get shit out and that's why he's in so many different bands making HIS STYLE of shit, but everything is so different then every other band that he's in. There's only a handful of musicians that I can think of off the top of my head that do this and most of them are singers. Maynard from Tool has a few different bands. Mike Patton from Faith No More has made almost as many albums with as many different bands as Les has. But there's a LOT of jazz musicians that are KILLER TALENTED and are "HIRED GUNS". They do it for the music. They do it for the art. Les is just crazy good. Go look up him and Bucket Head. Bucket Head in my opinion IS the best guitar player alive and any time I say this to someone that knows a lot about music they want to debate and throw a name of another guitar player, but then I pull my phone out and show them Buckethead playing live and they just watch him and stop making any other comments. There's a good amount of shit on TH-cam with those 2 together.
@MandaloreStier I saw a interview with Les where he said the mask was one of the many that's been tossed to him on stage during a show... just imagine, some dude supplied that mask to him and now it's enabled him to play the whamola!
i love these two dudes on the drums. the guy on the left love breaking his symbols. give meaning to the fact that "you cant just play the drums you gotta beat the fuckin shit oudda it. hahah
@drfunkenstein124 Agreed. One of the best musicians and showmen performing today. He's the Hendrix of bass instruments. We'll all be happy to say we saw him play, one day. Hopefully that day is a long way off and Les can wow us all for many years to come.
This song was actually made by Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. But i believe in this video he is performing it with the Fungi Ensemble
Unbelievably amazing and orchestral..! Extra applause to the camera filmer for avoiding that flag that blocked the view. No offense to the cause or country, but wow, imagine being in the crowd and having to deal with that in your face.
I have had to leave my camera, and weave my way to the front, and ask if they would mind moving to the side. I got positive results most of the time. Other times the flag waving gets more intense. Either way, I’m glad to have footage to remember the weekend by, and to help others remember the night, more clearly😉
Never heard this before. Wow. My immediate reaction was that it is reminiscent of Captain Beefheart. After reading about Claypool, I see that others have made the same comparison.
@horvathazagergo Nope it's a string instrument that uses a pulley/level system in order to change the tension of the strings with the result that the pitch changes. There are a number of string or rather acoustic instruments that put most electronic instruments to shame in what sounds can be made.
Definitely one of the best shows I had been to. I’ve seen Les in a lot of venues, but his was by far his best performance. Went back in 2014, shot more video, and someone stole my gear out of my tent! No video that year to upload! Damn WOOKIES!

wow!
***** no!
***** ok ok already
I agree, I am not sure he is human, if so maybe super-human

I never realized it until now but I really need a whamola.
Lol I was thinking the same thing.
Me too man 😩
Make one.
Lmaooo same here man
My face has melted every time I have seen Les Claypool live. Personal favorite, him and the fancy band at Bogarts in Cincinnati.
I have 2 favorite shows of theirs Ive seen, First time doing mushrooms in San Francisco Halloween night concert that was life changing, very close second if not tied was Gogol Bordello opening for them with a pretty generously long set before Primus. Those shows will stay in my head for a while.

3:10 is so funny. Just drops his whamola and proceeds to walk off stage like a monkey.
Les claypool is one of the greatest musicians of all time in my opinion. Never followed the rules once. Everything he does is a true work of art.
One of the best artists alive today. 💯
in my numbers of shows I've seen live, nobody has blown me away as much Les Claypool in any group.
So much respect for the drummers.... and ley claypool in general!
There's never been such a talented bassist! Saw them live at the Universal Amphitheater in the late 90's. Greatest show ever!
Absolutely unSTOMPable; the Claypool TRAIN in motion! Grand filming. Enjoyed this. Have seen Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains Band (2X), Primus (1X), & Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade Band (3X). Hope to see Oysterhead live someday.

Can't stop watching this. Thank you for sharing!!!
holy fuck those drummers and claypool were insane
The drummer on the left is Mike Dillon...check out his music...you won't be disappointed
Man, those drummers are freaking TIGHT! >:D
All three of them!
Absolutely taut!
Les is one of the only artists besides rob scallon to get on stage and say "yeah... Imma play a stick today..."
HAHA!!! THIS MADE ME LAUGH BECAUSE IT'S SO ACCURATE. HE'S THAT GOOD TOO THAT HE CAN PLAY A FUCKING STICK. Wow I just Googled the line up. I didn't know that he plays under JUST HIS NAME of Les Claypool.
Here in 2024, looking back at past, better times.
I'm genuinely curious. With all of the insanely talented people in the world was has no one even come close to Les Claypool?
I like this comment because I while watching this I was remembering when I saw them at Wood Stock in 94 and Palooza in 93.

This kinda creative expression reminds me of what it’s like when don’t take too many, but just the right amount of mushrooms.
We have seen though the same eyes my friend.
Les Claypool... Saw him in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Front row. Unforgettable.
No one can, because no one has the same amount of greatness as Claypool.
That was SICK! Les never ceases to amaze me.
@MandaloreStier I saw a interview with Les where he said the mask was one of the many that's been tossed to him on stage during a show... just imagine, some dude supplied that mask to him and now it's enabled him to play the whamola!
The drums at 3:10 ...HARD CORE!!!!!
I wonder how many people interviewed for the position of lead Whamola technician.
The Fungi Ensemble is simply fantastic!
i love these two dudes on the drums. the guy on the left love breaking his symbols. give meaning to the fact that "you cant just play the drums you gotta beat the fuckin shit oudda it. hahah

I remember seeing that video of him playing Whamola live and I was like "what the hell is that thing"
This is fuckin' incredible. Love me some Claypool but even by his standards this is hot.

Primus sucks

Very nice recording.
@horvathazagergo

seen claypool eight times now, twice more this suumer, sick! PURELY SICK!
@15TIMMEH It's a Whamola dude, check em out. Pretty rare, but super awesome.
I miss waka. 😭
he can really make that thing talk!
the guy looked pissed when claypool ditched his whamola
The number one rule of being a roadie is look pissed at all times.
And page one of the Whamola songbook.
1:06 it looks like he’s staring into the camera
Definitely one of the best shows I had been to. I’ve seen Les in a lot of venues, but his was by far his best performance. Went back in 2014, shot more video, and someone stole my gear out of my tent! No video that year to upload! Damn WOOKIES!
that bass stick looks a lot of fun indeed. i want a six string guitar like that. played with a slide n ebow

Artistry just stepped out of the tropical jungle to excite the tribesmen
What is he playing, a something stick? Always on time!
A whambler
@chykymunky actually, i think hes with Les Claypool (his bands name)
@theC4K3is4lie whamola, good luck finding one, they'd cost well over $600.
@crazykillah911
They have to be hand crafted that is why they are expensive.
Does anyone know what type of bass guitar Les is playing for Booneville Stomp? My guess is a dobro bass. Please clarify. Thanks
it's a Michael Kelly Bayou 4 Resonator Bass
Is the bass Les is playing a bass version of a Resonator or just a custom bass that looks a lot like a Resonator?
Is that drummer the dude from John Dies at the End?
That might have been our group.
Hello
What's the song they're playing at 5:31?
So cool. This do not suck.
