for curiosity, it would really be awesome seeing that thing deform with the superheated projectile that includes the tip. hell when the steel deformed when the bolt impacted was oddly beautiful
You know, as it is said at 20:11, even Hacksmith starts to appreciate the sheer force of bullets, now that he sees how hard it is to penetrate this skull with crowbar, or a rebar from a recurve crossbow, which actually fails to do so at 18:50, and the same happens to an actual crossbow, while the recurve crossbow is stronger than a usual one. There's a lot of videos on YT that show what a usual rifle ammo can do to medieval armor (not to speak of a usual human skull) So, what's OP is the Barrett 50, and even the usual rifles like Mosint-Nagant are OP, this here is video game stuff.
I suspect loading the bolts and drawing the bow would be easier if you had an HEV suit. Not only to protect your hands from the metal and the string, but also to help with the pull strength.
If I remember correctly, stuff like the gravity gun is actually considerably heavy to people to hold, Alyx struggles to hold it in Black Mesa East but Gordon is able to carry it like its nothing, so potentially yeah the HEV suit has some strength enhancing abilities
Like many weapons from games, the whole concept is seriously flawed - but you actually managed to get it working as intended. That is a major accomplishment and I salute you! Good job. Of course the crossbow could be improved by a built-in winch - then you could also increase the draw weight further. Rebar isn't a very good arrow material anyway as it isn't front heavy, so the "arrows" won't fly straight over a longer distance. They will start to tumble pretty soon. Plus, as you clearly demonstrated, it is a stupid idea to heat up your arrows as they will get butter soft. Much easier to make burning arrows with a bit of steel wool and sulfur, or make them ignite on impact.
+JoergSprave thanks Joerg! I too was surprised how close to the game we got it! The one in the game is winch driven so maybe a future upgrade?? the Hacksmith, surely you would be able to receive a contract from TH-cam to produce a "TH-cam Red" series or a Netflix funded series. As this easily meets the length requirements and is filled with engaging content.
So the crossbow implies at some point, alyx and maybe some of the vorts all gathered round a workbench at some coast base, came up with this concept, built several working models (enough to supply most resistance supply posts with rebar ammunition for it) and during none of this did eli or kleiner or anyone else say “this is stupid and dangerous”.
Do you forget that they were fighting an enemy, who equiped their occupation forces on earth with a rifle that can atomise you just by pressing alt fire. I don’t think they had to much room to complain
I love the process of "so we bought this completely functional regular crossbow, which we _could_ have modified, but instead what if we used this piece of somewhat flexible metal instead?" I love the commitment to working with what you have to build a makeshift weapon.
I appreciate the fact that when the resistance created this crossbow they decided that simply firing a piece of rebar at the combine with enough force to pin corpses to walls just wasn't enough, nope. They needed to heat the thing red hot first and then launch said rebar at the combine with enough force to pin the body into the wall.

I always thought that the rebar being red hot would mean it's very soft and would bend while shooting and either become a boomerang or blow up in shooter's face or turn into a donut under the crossbow's push and take off in a random direction. I am surprised you were able to get a steel rod that is both red hot and rigid enough to be shot from the crossbow and penetrate it's target. I've watched this video a half dozen times now... such great execution! Hats off. Now that I've gotten over the "wow" factor and my brain engaged, I had a question. How come those Lipos didn't blow from the short? Did you use a protection circuit? If so, any chance you will publish it? The inner nerd in me is dying to know! Again, great job. 👍
+LockPickingLawyer even though I'm "shorting" the batteries, that's not quite what is happening! Think of the rebar as a giant resistor or load! It will take a maximum amount of power, which is why we tested with the car batteries first! It will only draw 1000-2000A. So we made the battery pack capable of giving twice that! Also as metal heats up, it draws less electricity! So if it's say 2000A to start, it drops down to around 500A when it's red!
Also good to note - LiPo's are rated by max current they can happily provide without risk of damage, noted as a 'C' rating. 20C means the battery can provide 20x the storage capacity of the battery in Ah (or mAh). ie. 5000mAh battery with 20C has max current of 5000x20= 100,000mA or 100A. Placing multiple batteries in parallel will multiply this max current. Battery will go flat quickly though, discharging at 20C means you'll only get 60min/20 = 3 minutes runtime.

idea: get a tungsten carbide rod (size of arrow), put steel arrow tip to one end, then electroplate arrow with coating of nickel so when it heats up it will give that orange red glow really easily. this should be able to withstand the heat (due to the tungsten core) and retain its shape when it hits the target. you could just sharpen the tip instead of adding the arrow head. lmk what you think
just looked up price for tungsten carbide rod around the size of an arrow, there's one on amazon at 0.25" diameter and 12" long. it would be more the size of a bolt than an arrow but its only $55.

Here's an idea, let's make the ammunition heavy, slow, and weaker/more mailable than it would be normally (that comment was directed more at the creators of the game, not the builder of the cross bow. Rock on dude)
The rebar is ribbed, blunt and red hot. The shape and weight would cause massive damage after impalement. The stuck superheated rebar would cook the target from the inside out.
Oh yeah, something that the Hacksmith didn't follow up on is that the Half-Life 2 crossbow isn't just an inductive bow but possibly a railgun. (Er...Railbow) The bolt sits on two metal rails and there is a loud zap with a flashy sparking electrical discharge when it fires.
fun fact: half lifes crossbow is much stronger because it can penetrate a helmet, human skin, human skull, human brain, another part of human skull and more skin and the helmet from the other side and if someone is close to a wall they will get impaled to it so its probably MUCH harder to pull
Brooooo that took me back aye, funnily enough my dad's just got a new PC and installed unreal and some other nostalgic fps games like serious Sam and the original half life.

Hi Im Lockpickinglawyer and today I show how to open the silo door.
fun fact: in half life 1 you can hit the body parts with the crowbar to reduce them to just blood puddles, so finishing him off with a crowbar was rather accurate
James has become Gordon Freeman, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Thor, Spiderman, Han Solo, Star-Lord, Iron Man, Batman, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Elon Musk, Shazam and Thanos. just to name a few
No Levi?
ena pfp detected youre cool
This is your coolest project yet! Nice job. Those battery packs seem well-suited for something I'm working on. Can you give me the product name or a link? Thanks in advance. 👍
5000mah 7.4v 50c
the Hacksmith thanks.
"You have done a great deal in a small time span."
- G-man
In a small time. Span.
Gordon Freeman would be proud, the combine would be scared
The thumbnail makes you seem prepared for a combine invasion AND an attack from severely mutated people.
7:56 sounds like mario
Lol it does so much 😂
Lmao fr 😂😂
itsa me maario
Woohoo😄😄😄😄🤣🤣😂
Thinking quickly, the Hacksmith constructs a homemade crossbow, using only a leaf-spring, some scrap metal, and a crossbow!
XD!
but rebar when its not heated actualy worked better than normal arrow, and what if we make rebar with sharp tip? heated rebar looks like could only be used for lighting flammable things on fire
Make pretty tracer rounds as well! 😁
Am i the only one noticing old UT2001 for halflife content?
Over a year since this vid debuted....still one of my favorites...fun weapon, fun build, some interesting problems, and as usual for your vids you all had plenty of fun testing it out and interesting stuff happened.
I see you, editor who made the welds go along to the music. you haven't gone unnoticed
"I did?"
... "uhh, yeah!"
James : we are going to the metal supermarket!
Eathen : the metal supermarket ?
James : the metal supermarket!!!
Me : lol the metal supermarket...
...... WAIT ITS A THING?!
Then takes to google to find nearest market.
Hahahaha
16:30reminds me of the introduction of father grigori
It's so awesome! My favorite project is still that batman grappling hook, but this is near the top of the list.
idea: get a tungsten carbide rod (size of arrow), put steel arrow tip to one end, then electroplate arrow with coating of nickel so when it heats up it will give that orange red glow really easily. this should be able to withstand the heat (due to the tungsten core) and retain its shape when it hits the target. you could just sharpen the tip instead of adding the arrow head. lmk what you think
just looked up price for tungsten carbide rod around the size of an arrow, there's one on amazon at 0.25" diameter and 12" long. it would be more the size of a bolt than an arrow but its only $55.
lol $55 for a shot and it might not be reusable? bit outside of my budget!
I grew up with Half-Life 2, and this has to be one, if not THE BEST prop/actual fucking weapon from the game I've ever seen.
Thank you so much.
I think the reason Gordon could do it with ease is cause he was wearing an exo suit
How to start a campfire *with style*
Windoge 10 lit
and accidentally set fire to everything else
how to start a forest fire with style
Windoge 10 7
This isnt style you have to use the partikelcannon
This is convenient too because the Hacksmith already looks like Gordon a little bit. Just give him glasses.
Crossbow v.s Captain Americas Shield
Crossbow will win
Heh,crossbow wins
Rip caps shield
Nah
Shield will block tf outta that

"Today, were gonna be making a fully functional HEV suit along with a charged gravity gun."
You gotta love the oldschool Unreal Tournament main theme in the background...
so people do still remember that game
I still play UT99
first thing I noticed xD
i went through the comments just to see if anyone else noticed. damn good game and still a big group of clans out there that play still.
its the Colossus soundtrack
You used 8 batteries
You used 4 pullies,
8 devided by 4 is 2
half life 2 was made 11 years ago
11 years ago the wii was released
the wii sold over 100,000,000 systems
there were roughly 100,000,000 people in the phillipines in 2015
2015 was the year china built pseudo islands to claim more sea
the sea is salty
salty is a gamer term for an obnoxious gamer.
I am salty
I watch hacksmith
Hacksmith is awesome
Awesome is a 7 letter word
7 is considered a lucky number
lucky numbers are irrational
fiction is irrational
hacksmith makes fiction possible
fiction is a category of books
printed books experienced a sales increase of 7% in 2016
2016 minus 7 is 2009
coincidence? I think not
Relevency to half life 3? Not really
Half life 3 confirmed? Yes
Hotel? Trivago
HL2 was released in 2004. The wii was released in 2006. I think you meant Episode 1 was released 11 years ago.
Holy shit, the Wii was launched 11 years ago!? Wow, I'm feeling old...
TomStep you have too much time
the trivago one at the end made me laugh
TomStep shut up
Wait so you used metal, a truck part, and a crossbow.... to make a crossbow
NICE
Andrew Garrison so dave made a makeshift megaphone with a squirrel, some string, and a megaphone
Andrew Garrison seems like the tf2 crafting system doesn't it?
I LOVE SOUNDING WITH REBAR
Next thing you know, he makes a HEV suit and makes a Resonance Cascade happen, fights off a crap ton of Headcrabs, Zombies, Aliens and then HECU troopers. Soon, he would take a portal to Xen, kill a testicle spider, and kill a giant flying alien baby.
After that, he would be hired by Gman.
A few years later, he would wake up in a train that arrives in City 17, meet Barney, Alyx, Kleiner, Eli, and Judith. Fight off Zombies, and Civil protection. He would then fight off more zombies with the help of Father Grigori, escape in the mines, and meet the combine. Then, he would get a buggy, kill some antlions, and drive on the costal road, while killing combines and antlions, and a few zombies.
He would then get the power to control the antlions, head to a "high security prison," and fight off more combine with the help of some antlions.
Soon he would meet up with Alyx again, and fight off more combine.
Soon he would be betrayed by Judith, meet up with Kleiner again, and fight with the resistance to defeat the combine.
He would then enter a giant ass building, kill more combine, and then meet Dr. Breen. Judith would help save him, Alyx and Eli.
He would then go on and kill Dr. Breen.
The end.
Wait...
*looks at episode 1 and episode 2*
@Sasquatch It's at 90 now.
Now you need to make a tool gun
Only as an decoration ???
A gravity gun would be better
Toa you mean a "Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator" :>
physgun better than gravity gun
In the actual game it is called the Mega "Gravity Gun" by using the command physgun_mega_enabled 1 so it is not a physgun. That is a garry's mod Mega "Gravity Gun"

Hacksmith: *bleeps "shit"*
Also Hacksmith: *says shit two times before this*
Remember! Gordon can only use the rebar firing bow because he is wearing the H.E.V. suit! A Heat and Damage resistant suit of armor!
Gordon touches red hot rebar
Hev suit: this is fine!
Same suit steps within a meter of fire: AHHH IT BURNNS
@@Pacman009 That is a bit strange
Chalkboard behind:
“HL3 Confirmed?”
“03/03/2018”
🤔🤔🤔
I saw that too what do you think it means
Skotthas Dafever truly sad, but at this point I am not surprised at all. I'll just have to play all the old ones and remember the good times. Timeless games really.
Skotthas Dafever fuck valve.
I saw that Half Life 3 confirmed on the board
"the supermarket?"
the metal supermarket."
*metal intensifies*
you know when he put on the glasses and the lab coat he actually looked like Gordon Freeman a lot
Always wanted a real life Rebar Crossbow. I can now serve in the Gamer Rebellion.
So well filmed! I loved the ZGB collab! EVERYONE share this! Post the URL in a comment!
+G3AR - 'GreekGadgetGuru' thanks Paul!
G3AR - 'GreekGadgetGuru'
Thanks man! Hope all is going well!
The limbs of the crossbow need to be tapered, or else it will only bend in one place, making it weaker and less effective.
Gordon freeman in the flesh, i took the liberty of relieving you of your weapons and the armor, i think you’ve earned it.
Here's an idea, let's make the ammunition heavy, slow, and weaker/more mailable than it would be normally
(that comment was directed more at the creators of the game, not the builder of the cross bow. Rock on dude)
The rebar is ribbed, blunt and red hot. The shape and weight would cause massive damage after impalement. The stuck superheated rebar would cook the target from the inside out.
DUDE you need some heavy shit for the combine, zombies, and aliens!!
I don't know how that rebar penetrates combines
Watching this made me realize how impractical this weapon would actually be. So heavy and difficult to load!
9:25 "why you guys looking at me"
I H K I died to his voice 😂
Now i'm excited for frying pan :D
MR. UNICUM golden frying pan batter
MR. UNICUM I was exited, but decided to stay.
Not for cooking

You have to coat it in Austrailium and make it count kills too.
my toxic trait is thinking i could easily draw that
I like to think William Tell said the same thing you did: "Holy S*** I hit the apple!"
I love the fact that the unreal tournament soundtrack is playing in the background.
Attention ground units. Anticitizen reported in this community. Code: lock, cauterize, stabilize.
You guys are great
fun fact: half lifes crossbow is much stronger because it can penetrate a helmet, human skin, human skull, human brain, another part of human skull and more skin and the helmet from the other side and if someone is close to a wall they will get impaled to it
so its probably MUCH harder to pull
AAAHHHH the intro made me think I accidentally launched tf2
wake up mister freeman...
"Rise and shine, Mr. Freeman....."
Rise and shine. Not that I wish to imply you have been sleeping on the job....

Happy 20th anniversary Half Life 2!
