    Great video Blake. My little girl M is 10 years old and we are going to learn how to tie flies (hopefully!). She, her mother and her sister all received fly rods and reels for Christmas. Good stuff too. I am hoping they all catch the bug (sorry for the pun). Your video was very informative. Thank you.

      back in the day it was normal to tie 2 flies above a spinner and worm when ice fishing for trout. now we are restricted to one line one hook.

      I started with the cabelas kit. It’s so poor quality it was more frustrating than it was worth. But everyone has to start some where!

    Hello, just watched the video and would like to get your opinion. I have a vise and various tools I found in my Dad's stuff when he passed away. I've taken up fly fishing the past few years and would like to dabble in tying some flies. There are also various supplies in the box and I have no idea what I can and can't do with them.
    OR
    Should I just start with the tools and just get the supplies I need for what I want to tie?

      @Gigharborflyshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. If you want to start with patterns you want to tie, getting the materials is great and we actually have some material kits on our website that make it really easy to start. Or, if you'd like to figure out what you have, you can email us pictures sales@gigharborflyshop.com and we can give you a rough idea of what you have and what you can tie.

    Hi, Not sure if your gonna see this but if I really want to get into fly tying but what im wondering is it better if I buy all my tools sperate or a kit?

    • @Gigharborflyshop
      @Gigharborflyshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the kits are good. I really like the Dr Slick tool set as well as the basic loon kit. We have both in stock.
      There’s basic tools you’ll just need and then you can add additional as needed.

    • @Gigharborflyshop
      @Gigharborflyshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you already have a vise, start with a quality bobbin and pair of scissors. If you learn how to whip finish by hand, you'll be able to tie a few flies before needing other tools.

      @@Gigharborflyshop So to start out I would only need a vise, scissors and a bobbin? And if i dont have a vise would a work shop vise work?

      I'd recommend getting a real fly tying vise

    What's a good easy way to make fly for salmon and trout

    • @Gigharborflyshop
      @Gigharborflyshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tommy, thanks for checking out our videos. For salmon, a clouser with heavy dumbell eyes is great. You can get creative with the materials as movement, color, and profile are most important. For trout, I recommend checking out the Hareline Fly Tying Material Kit. gigharborflyshop.com/product/hareline-fly-tying-material-kit/
      We also have videos for each of the 20 patterns on our YT channel.

      first, atlantic or pacific salmon. caught both, atlantic better taste and fight. I fish nl and labrador mainly 60 days every season. learn to tie the black silvertip. all flies used in the northeast spring from it. very simple fly. add a tag. then a throat. and so on . dry flies require patience.
      tight lines
