It's because GPUs don't need to work hard to render a basic 2d applications, these tasks would be more CPU dependant anyway, if for some reason, the igpu on the laptop was extremely weak, a resolution change might make a perceivable difference then
no matter the resolution, the pixels are still lit just that more pixels have the same color thats all. The only difference it makes is cpu computational power but that takes so little that its pretty much negligible for semi modern laptops
because some people didn't watch the video and just like/disliked it based on the title. their hate for clickbait titles came before they could actually make a proper opinion on the video.

I am a simple man. I see new LTT video with a "ERMAHGERD CLICKBAIT!" title. I check it out and chuckle at the title, then I enjoy the 10 minute video. Lastly, I leave a like, because it was an interesting and informative video, and had a moderately funny title.
You'd be suprised how many simpletons there're on the Internet. Remember that a hot knife video got like 30 million views, for reasons beyond my understanding.
Still relatively new here, but it seems to me that Linus has reached a sort of critical mass of youtube popularity where, no matter what he does, 10-30% of his viewers will automatically dislike every vid. Period. Some folks have said this is a response to what many long-time viewers feel is some kind of sell-out thing by Linus and Company. Or, more recently, for throwing out over-the-top clickbaity vid titles and images. In the case of the latter, I believe Linus has already acknowledged, publicly apologized for and has pledged to do better moving forward. I say they downvote just out of sheer spite, jealousy and irrational hate. Some probably just downvote just out of simple habit. Which is just stupid, shallow and sad. In the end it makes no difference. Linus and gang have 4+M subscribers and their content is generally compelling, entertaining, up-to-date and informative enough to insure that that figure will only increase. Much the same way that uber-hardcore smartphone enthusiasts really have almost no impact on the overall smartphone market at all, all the Linus downvoters and haters don't really matter in the end. And BTW, that is not to say that uber-hardcore smartphone enthusiasts are ALL haters. Just most of them. ;) :D
^ Fair enough. So, you are saying that if Linus had changed the word "TRIPLE" [which is the word I assume is most guilty of being click-bait] to "GREATLY IMPROVE" everyone would be happy and the world will be full of unicorns? Despite the fact that in the video, he does show specifically that they were able to achieve around a 3X increase in battery life over what they initially observed with all the peripherals plugged in and settings non-optimized at zero cost?
Linux: sudo tlp start xbacklight -set xrandr --output --brightness Thanks me later (xbacklight and xrandr work in different way to dim you screen, not sure which is more powersaving)
This is actually a good point. Like if I just get basic £10 ear buds and plug them into my phone and leave music playing through them all day how much less battery life would I get? because I already tried testing with a battery tester app and got within 2 mins time different with and without headphones so it must be very minimal
Plus the drivers in larger headphones are bigger, so they use more power to drive them? So I would think they would use more power? I'm just spit ballin' here, I really don't know..
I think in addition to all that, you can manually cap the clock speed of CPU in advanced power settings to reasonable level for even more saving. maybe turning off 2nd GPU(if you have) or the one which is used for heavy stuff in a notebook might also help. Don't let the bars go lower than 2 for wifi network. And don't wanna upload/download anything unless absolute necessity. That resolution thing might be helpful for tuning down from 4K/2K to full HD or 720p but we all know that all the pixels of the screen are lit up so only thing that is gonna go down is the power used by GPU to render more pixels per frame. And lastly if your exhaust is releasing a lot of heat then check with background programs, something might be leeching resources to generate more heat. another tip is to turn off "superfetch" service in windows which caches the more frequently used softwares into RAM for better accessibility but to hold more programs in RAM, more power is required.
I made a custom plan going through all of the windows advanced settings and it is so much better than the stock plans. I used to only get about 2-1/2 hours of battery life and now I get about 4 to 4-1/2 hours of use out of it. It's great :)
This video was very informative Linus thanks for it! Upgrading my HHD to an SSD in my laptop helped out big time! I went from an average of 4 hours on battery life to an average of 6 hours just by doing that! I personally recommend anyone out there with a i3, i5, or i7 laptop to do the same to help out with thier battery life!
@@RaffyART1995 Yes I do! I don't really use it much myself, but my mom uses it all the time for her card games or for keeping spreadsheets to organize things around the house!
Linus said that we stream in 4K, so I turned my settings up. And turned them back to 720p as my internet suddenly decided to be bad. Ah well, its only a 13 inch screen, I never notice the difference.

Linus, thank you for making this video! This topic is really important to me and I'm glad you (and your team) did all the testing. I do not understand how there are so many downvotes. Please don't let them discourage you from making helpful, practical videos like this. I missed those guide-like videos from the old days. (If the downvotes really are because of the thumbnail that looks like a typical clickbait video I'm baffled. Go watch the video people! It's actual helpful content! I see no reason to downvote. I mean it might help if the thumbnails and the style were more professional like for example MKBHD but this is just Linus' style I guess and thats ok.)
I - and I think a lot of other people too - disliked because I did not find the information in this video useful. To me it was either non or common sense. But that is exactly how I mean it: to me. In my opinion the voting system is a good way to show the creator what we are interested in and therefore I left a dislike.
I agree Julius. LMG did an amazing job testing the practicality, but I don't believe that most of their fans are so clueless about battery life as to need this video. And personally, if I were that clueless I would be able to find most of this videos' instructions by reading a WikiHow or some such nonsense.
Linus, you should use, and endorse, ThrottleStop and undervolt the CPU and GPU. This will net a HUGE gain in battery life. The process is also way easier than overclocking since all you're messing with is voltages and you'll also see a performance increase due to less heat and you won't hit the TDP wall anymore. Seriously check it out and do up a video on it! It'll help TONS of people and I'm sure you'll get a shit ton of views on it! I tweaked my gs73vr with it and overclocked the gpu. Playing fallout 4 used to make it run at 90*c and it would routinely hit the 45w power limit knocking performance back to a lousy 2.4ghz. With a quick repaste and no undervolt my temps decreased to 77*c but the fans were running at full speed. After a -165mV tweak to the core and cache, -60mV to the Integrated GPU, and -20mV to the system controller I'm now sitting chilly at 72*c on full load with prime 95 and websurfing for 2hours and fan speed at 90%. Playing fallout 4 for a long 7hours with graphics maxed on the 1060 and with it overclocked, the CPU never goes above 70*c and 70% fan speed with a max of 29.63w! The GPU also never goes above 75*c (not sure on its fan speed though). The CPU and GPU on this laptop share the same heat sink, that's why this is so important to mention it.
I think this video was a trolling joke. I said the same about undervolting. Also adjusting power plan. also installing a h264 youtube codec extension, all are super effective and none are mentioned by Linus here. installing an efficient ssd is also a great option which they skipped for some reason
TabalugaDragon Great minds think alike🍻 I didn't even think of it being a trolling vid, it very well could've been, but we know how Linus can overlook things like this.
well I mean they are computer geeks who obviously KNOW all these things, I don't even doubt it(well, maybe except for h264 youtube codec, not very well known thing). and they reviewd the possibilities of how to prolongue battery life like some newbies here, also makign jokes about RGB keyboard and mouse.
TabalugaDragon Agreed, but it did have a decent amount of merit. It debunked a lot of BS things that some of the big review sites always claim. Like the screen brightness part, I've been arguing that point for awhile.
ah, but still. it's kinda infuriating that with the amount of subscribers they have, they could have made a video that is actually incredibly useful. undervolt instead of sacrificing perfomance, increase both disk speed and battery life by installing an ssd, install a h264 youtube codec and watch videos up to 4k without any loss in battery life instead of lowering video quality - things like this is what the video should have been about.
Another missed tip from Linus Tech Tips, however more experience required for the regular user. I under-volt my CPU processor and GPU processor and downclock the GPU memory and GPU/CPU core slightly. Example: Intel extreme overclocking utility, and afterburner MSI. This saves quite a decent amount.
The only problem is that MSI Afterburner itself wakes your descrite GPU and drains battery pretty well. Tried at on my Legion 7 today. Result: about 25W discharge rate with afterburner in the background vs 11W without it.
Title should have been " How to triple your battery life if your average use is streaming multiple 4K videos, while 4K gaming, max screen brightness, max speaker volume, 3 keyboards and mice attached, and 2 chrome tabs open."
+Dutch Gaming Media Yeah it's a joke and I liked the video but it doesn't change the fact that they did it. It's like the title equivalent of ''It's just a prank, bro!"
Not mentioned is turning down the display refresh rate. If your monitor supports 48 Hz refresh, you can gain up to 15% battery life (as tested on a Dell Inspiron 3412).
Never do it a stupid idea. System 32 its vital for your operating system it will not give you more perfomance and power saving it will give you instability. Do a research.
1. Exit unnecessary background processes . 2. Turn on battery saver. Turn on power saver too if not doing something intensive . 3. Detach peripherals (external mouse / keyboard) . 4. Dim the display brightness. Turn off keyboard back-lit. 5. Turn down speaker volume or use headphones instead . 6. If streaming video, reduce resolution . 7. Reduce monitor resolution.

Linux:
sudo tlp start
xbacklight -set
xrandr --output --brightness
Thanks me later
(xbacklight and xrandr work in different way to dim you screen, not sure which is more powersaving)
Screen brightness shouldn't matter much if you're not using a graphical environment.
I use powertop to set powersaving mode on various things as well as compiling my kernel with "conservative" scheduling.
Maronicam Linux is shit
ahem what did you say mate?
How much energy do headphones consume?
Depends on the headphones and the amplifier in the device.
Depends on amplifier efficiency and how loud you run the headphones. (impedance and sensitivity both taken into account)
Yay! Useful comment!
Him:"you've got critically important stuff to do"
Also him:browsing through Netflix
Pulling out joke made me smile, here's a like
I think in addition to all that, you can manually cap the clock speed of CPU in advanced power settings to reasonable level for even more saving.
maybe turning off 2nd GPU(if you have) or the one which is used for heavy stuff in a notebook might also help.
This isn't Clickbait, the title is actually true
I made a custom plan going through all of the windows advanced settings and it is so much better than the stock plans. I used to only get about 2-1/2 hours of battery life and now I get about 4 to 4-1/2 hours of use out of it. It's great :)
What do you have for the custom settings?
shove a twinkie into the cpu socket. Twice the power, Twice the graphics, 1/2 the battery juice.
This was great!
Thank You So Much
Just how many comments did you make on this video?
What
This video was very informative Linus thanks for it! Upgrading my HHD to an SSD in my laptop helped out big time! I went from an average of 4 hours on battery life to an average of 6 hours just by doing that! I personally recommend anyone out there with a i3, i5, or i7 laptop to do the same to help out with thier battery life!

Do you sill have this laptop?
@@RaffyART1995 Yes I do! I don't really use it much myself, but my mom uses it all the time for her card games or for keeping spreadsheets to organize things around the house!
@@Shipprofile08 Nice to hear laptops still working after many years. Good!
2:25 lmfao
Damn, I gained an extra 3 hours of battery life on my laptop thanks to this!
my HDD made a few bad blocks because of the thumbnail!
did your storage medium get handed down from your grand dad?
DanielC what was the title? the one I see is "Triple your battery life for free! This method really works" which is accurate, if a little sensational.
THERE WONT BE AN ISSUE AS LONG AS YOUR BLOCKS DONT GO AFTER LINUS'S BLOCKS

Thanks for the tip Linus, I got 10 mins extra battery Life!!!! EVOLUTION IS A MYTH!!
I must say, you have a rather bewitching way of interacting with your viewers! Way to go though! Always love your tutorials. Keep up the good work.
Great video! Learned a lot and I will actually use this knowledge in my everyday life.
I don't know how wrote the script for this video, but man, I want to give you a high five!

Thanks for timestamp...
Go back to woozworld
Linus said that we stream in 4K, so I turned my settings up. And turned them back to 720p as my internet suddenly decided to be bad. Ah well, its only a 13 inch screen, I never notice the difference.
The puns are amazing as always Linus.....
sorry, i am noob, does this help me charge my fidget spinner
Don't forget your whip gets charged to max as well.
yes!
thnx guys i will go test this
its time to stop
Joke's on you. They have fidget spinners with rechargeable batteries.
hdd vs ssd for power savings ?
Def ssd
There's something called hybrid hdd+ssd.
ssd
I wonder if Linus ever gets back to these videos and enjoys watching them vividly
Make a bitcoin miner Linus and see how it goes!
Umm, he has done that. A long time ago.
Maybe this is why he has no financial problems.
I GET IT! CUZ HE SAID OHM! AND ITS THE SYMBOL FOR OHM!!!! AHAHAHA I NEED FRIENDS!!!!!!!!
The stupid part is, I thought it was the god of war symbol and I was a confused dummy

I used ctrl+F[ohm] to find you. We are now the 1% that appreciated the pun.
(Probably for different reasons, but mine is Ohm's law.)
Holy shit, I'm not the only one who understood it!
I have done some of this settings in my acer notebook and its working. its has increased my battery life by 30%.
i couldnt BELIEVE what happened next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also more dislikes than views thats cool
Thank you ThioJoe
oh i thought me started making real videos
edit: *he
Chraman my thoughts exactly
TabalugaDragon Great minds think alike🍻
I didn't even think of it being a trolling vid, it very well could've been, but we know how Linus can overlook things like this.
well I mean they are computer geeks who obviously KNOW all these things, I don't even doubt it(well, maybe except for h264 youtube codec, not very well known thing). and they reviewd the possibilities of how to prolongue battery life like some newbies here, also makign jokes about RGB keyboard and mouse.
Thanks Linus these tips will be very useful once i go back to school and need my laptop to last
*uses open backed headphones instead of speaker*
Another missed tip from Linus Tech Tips, however more experience required for the regular user. I under-volt my CPU processor and GPU processor and downclock the GPU memory and GPU/CPU core slightly. Example: Intel extreme overclocking utility, and afterburner MSI. This saves quite a decent amount.
The only problem is that MSI Afterburner itself wakes your descrite GPU and drains battery pretty well. Tried at on my Legion 7 today. Result: about 25W discharge rate with afterburner in the background vs 11W without it.
TIL: To extend battery life, don't do anything with your computer.
...and pull out when you do.
RIP Computer
the turn of devices really is a driver thing.
In Linux where drivers often lack proper power management features this can yield a huge improvement.
2:20 - fucking KILLED me X-D
I hoped you'd also compare HDD vs SSD. Everybody says it saves energy but it seems almost nobody really bothered to measure how much.
Title should have been
" How to triple your battery life if your average use is streaming multiple 4K videos, while 4K gaming, max screen brightness, max speaker volume, 3 keyboards and mice attached, and 2 chrome tabs open."
kfjhlkjashdf askjdfh lkasjdhflkah sdf
"2 chrome tabs open" some people just want to watch the world burn
Another tip: don't charge the laptop battery to 100%, it can decrease the full charge capacity.
Looks like Linus failed in pulling out...
Linus would kill me for watching in 480p
wtf ?
the video is pretty good
but the title ??
It's a joke. It's a parody on the shit they are investigating. stop fucking whining
Ironic clickbait is still clickbait
It's satire
+Dutch Gaming Media Yeah it's a joke and I liked the video but it doesn't change the fact that they did it. It's like the title equivalent of ''It's just a prank, bro!"
Not mentioned is turning down the display refresh rate. If your monitor supports 48 Hz refresh, you can gain up to 15% battery life (as tested on a Dell Inspiron 3412).
*camp intro*
"Get amped. The results may shock you." *linus eyebrow wiggle*
OH! It's gonna be one of those videos.
at 2:30 and I'm already right.
Linus could you test out undervolting the cpu and/or gpu for laptops?
Delete system 32
How does noone else do this?
lol
I suppose you are not wrong.
Nerf Conflicts Yeah this really works
Never do it a stupid idea. System 32 its vital for your operating system it will not give you more perfomance and power saving it will give you instability. Do a research.
1. Exit unnecessary background processes
.
2. Turn on battery saver. Turn on power saver too if not doing something intensive
.
3. Detach peripherals (external mouse / keyboard)
.
4. Dim the display brightness. Turn off keyboard back-lit.
5. Turn down speaker volume or use headphones instead
.
6. If streaming video, reduce resolution
.
7. Reduce monitor resolution.
Jokes on u. My laptop dont even have a kb backlight
2:30 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
or just get a laptop with a removable battery and carry a few spares with you
problem solved
Imagine someone carrying a backpack full of batteries
@@Rudxain better than being stuck with a $3500 paperweight
Disabling touchscreen on bios increases battery life for about 1 hr. Works great on Dell XPS series.
