I'm a beginner in photography and I've been watching A LOT of tutorials on youtube. This might just be the single most well-made out of all of them. I'm genuinely amazed by how much useful information was condensed into this video in a concise and comprehensible manner. Great job!

I literally feel the exact same way. I can't agree more. I grabbed a camera, grabbed a lens, took a few shots and wondered why they were all dark, grainy, and not crisp. This video answered like all of those questions lol.

I took photos for my friend at her reception and ended up with such grainy photos I wanted to cry!! Thank you for posting this! Sooo helpful! Understanding the relationship between shutter speed and ISO is such a game changer! Love your simple/straightforward explanation!

Same here 😭 it was my first debut photoshoot .. i messed up 😭 but thanks to this vid ...i finally understand how to easily get sharp shots ..

If you've set the correct aperture and shutter speed for the effect you want, having your ISO too low will result in an underexposed shot. You will get more noise trying to fix the underexposure in post, than you would have, if you'd used the correct ISO, even if it's "high".
If you have to use ISO 12,000 to get the exposure right, use ISO 12,000. It is almost ALWAYS better to get the exposure right, in the camera, than to try to fix it, in post.

I know your comment is 3 years old, but I have to say, I am learning photography right now and reading this helped me get my head out of the sand.
I did a photoshoot with my sister at her college graduation, and my pictures were so grainy. I was so mad at myself I wanted to scream for days.
Knowing I am not the only one who suffered through this helps a lot to keep me going.

Jason Vong explains things in such a simple way! I've watched TONS of other pro TH-cam channels on photography from other Pros yet Jason tells things that even an amateur like myself, who barely understands things like F-stops, can follow what Jason is saying. Thanks, dude for being generous with your time to make these helpful tutorials and yes I am now a subscriber!

Although i already understand the basics of ISO/aperture/shutter speed, i found this video a helpful refresher particularly the explanation about why sometimes at low apertures the shot can end up out of focus. Cheers Jason!

Great video as you identified some issues not often discussed. The one thing you didn’t mention with depth of field was that distance matters, though your example with the Mario carts actually illustrated it. Because you were really close it took a really narrow aperture to bring everything into focus, which actually is desirable with certain types of photography. That tripped me up, especially when I upgraded to a full frame camera.

Thank you Jason. The blogs are rife with hostile photographers who belittle ppl with snark and sarcasm. I don’t peruse them anymore. Mastering photography comes down to practice with your camera. What’s cool is not having to deal with film. We can see our mistakes rather quickly on the back screen or a transfer of pics to an iPad. I’d like to see a video discussing the many menus on my new A7III. Yep it’s pretty daunting going back and forth for a given shot. But it’s worth it. 👍

You thought me something new. I did a portrait photo shoot recently. I was using f1.7. And using face tracking AF. The nose was often in focus and eyes slightly off. Next time I’ll choose the tiny box pinpoint AF to get right at the eyes.
Also, a video idea for you. Show how different focal length lenses will show background closer or farther. (I’m not talking about depth of field focus). I’m talking about how if you shoot a portrait in 35mm the background will seem very far away and small. If you switch to 100mm the background is compressed and closer / larger in the background. I only understood this recently after years of shooting photos, so I know many beginner photographers don’t know this. I believe it is called Lens Compression. Cheers!
