As a person in their 70s with slight hand tremors I shoot in shutter priority to get sharp photos. I like to keep it 1/125 or faster. Yup, my ISO/noise can get up there. We do what we have to do.
I have a question, im 20, starting out on photography, I have a 2008 canon xti camera, do you know what I can do to get better shots at night? I only have 1600 ISO, i try my best to never use 1600 because its extremely grainy
@@FierceNinja Grab a lens thats (f1.4) I'd say, if that is- you're trying to shoot with natural light or street lights/neon store signs etc, instead of using a flash. I know that focal length is good for low light. You could go lower but I believe that kind of glass is way more pricey especially with canon since you cant buy 3rd party lenses unfortunately.
I am a working pro stills photog and being a fan of your videos and style for many years, I listened through it while working, even though I know all this stuff. This was so fun and clear and easy to understand. Cameras are easy to pic up, pics are easy to mess up and this fun style gives anyone a chance to understand and have more control. Awesome video. I get asked all the time to teach but I will send them this video instead.
I just got my first "real" camera two days ago and this is the first video of the many I've watched in the last couple days that so clearly explained exactly what I was messing with when moving various dials on my camera and what I was actually doing with those changing numbers. Thank you, looking forward to checking out more of these basics videos as I fumble my way through learning to be a hobby photographer (that hopefully still does a good job at it!).
Thanks very much Jason. I've been taking photographs and developing them in darkroom before Jason was born. Yet I found Jason's teachings and illustrations and simplification very refreshing. Well done, excellent work. 👍👍👍💯
I'm using the XPERIA PRO in the video here and the device has a microHDMI connection! The app is External Monitor which is native to the Sony Xperia phones
Great video, Jason. Very instructional and conceptual which works well for me as a seasoned shutterbug. Things to keep top of mind instead or in addition to just dialing through my settings. WHY I am using certain shutter speeds helps me take sharper photos and keep the concept of making the photo interesting as well as just technically sound.!
7:08 These reactions work great for trains arriving fast into the train station. 1/4000neill be too fast for arrival, especially int he evening. But 1/2000 is good to 1/3000 is OK if you are fine with noise. In the evening of course I do lowest aperture my lens can do. For some reason Shutter priority on my camera is set to constant aperture of 2.8.
Great video, Jason! Easy to understand. I like using my Lumix cameras. But my wife's new i phone takes great pictures too. The only advantages I can see with the phone are size and easy operation. I am new to photography, so the bottom line for me is cost of equipment. Is there something else? By the way, My Lumix gh 5 cost only $275. and it works well beyond my abilities.
This video and previous are great and valuable information especially as a beginner. Look forward for your next video of ISO. Keep up the good work and continue making great content.
I have been watching all your videos! Amazing content! Btw, I just bought the a7cii and I was wondering what cable do you use to use your phone as a monitor?
great video. Keep up the good work Jason. Quick question on the accessories regarding the Sony mount holding the external/phone. Can you share what they are as they are not included in your main website.
I made a "Shorts" on it if you wanna find it on my main channel page under the Shorts Tab. The title should be "how I use my phone as a monitor" I would link it but TH-cam flags any comments with links 😫
Question, if using a tripod, what’s the slowest shutter speed that a human can stay still? I’ve tried to do some self portraits in low light situations and still have yet to figure out the best setting as while i set focus on the subject, pictures still end up blurry
Hi Jason! In a sunny beach with static scene, what setting do you prefer?: ISO 50 1/2000 shutter, ISO 100 1/4000 or put ND Filter and take lowest ISO with less speed? Are the 3 the same?
Depends what you're capturing! If it's portraits on the beach, you can do the two high shutter settings you've mentioned! I wouldn't recommend ND as it does degrade the image quality slightly! BUT! if you are capturing the water of the beach (like you see in my waterfall photo in this video) use the ND Filter to smooth out the water! Hope this helps!
Question about ISO, in video using the native 12800 on A7S3 is a lot better than using 8000, does this apply to photos too or no? - also considering 640 and 12800 are native is there a bit difference between 640 and 12800 with a quality ND filter in output photo and video quality?
I am using a ZV-E1, I was expecting to go into S-Mode and see the familiar 1/X selection. Instead, I am getting numbers in the bottom left of my screen that seem to adjust by 0.2 as I move the dial. For example, in S-Mode, the numbers are red and go from 48.0 and then up. 48.2 48.3 48.4 48.6 48.7 48.8 49.0 What setting have a accidently changed to not have a normal looking S-Mode while in Photo. In all the other modes the Shutter Speed is displayed as you would expect, 1/60 or 1/40.
Yes! Most recent XPERIA phones with USB-C can be an external monitor for Sony cameras but has a slight delay. The one I'm using is the XPERIA PRO which is unique in that it has a microHDMI connection. Near 0 delay and it's what I use to record my camera screen for my tutorials!
If that has been working for you, then keep at it! Cameras are so good nowadays that the handheld rule can be bend a lot! However, I know some people out there are using older gear so I am suggesting doubling the shutter as a good safety measure!
Yep as long as you have plenty of light, you will need a high shutter to compensate which is perfectly ok and likely result in higher chance for sharp photos.

With how good AI denoising is nowadays, it's not even that big an issue anymore.
