    Why is there only one officer or boatman in these rescue boats? It seems to me there would be a real safety issue and trying to get somebody out of the water aboard one of these boats.

      Because they patrol on their own?
      They have swim ladders they can throw over the side.
      Helm to swimmers, get them to your side and drop ladders, engines in neutral and assist swimmers on board, get to shore asap for medical inspection.

      the primary role of police is law enforcement, rescue is incidental to their presence on the water; coast guard and fire & rescue carry multiple crew members.

    Sometimes a boat will sink when there is more water inside the boat than there should be. I know I know, I’ll see myself out.

    Scuppers sometimes have plastic housings that crack, the flaps inside get brittle and fall off or the tube gets clogged with barnacles and won’t allow scupper flap to seal.

    Take a look at the 27-30 second mark, the bilge is going. Honestly though, the first thing I do when I get a new boat is check out the bilge pump, in small boats like this you tend to find a 750 or 1000 GPH pump, in most cases this would be fine, but for me I always upgrade the pump to 2000 GPH and install a second pump. For the extra $100 it's a level of safety I prefer.

    Isn't a scupper a hole through the gunwale to drain water off the deck, not a through-hull fitting? And not below the waterline.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's correct. If a boat is self bailing it might have drain plug like holes at deck level that are slightly above the waterline on the stern to keep them from filling up with water when it rains or they ship water without the need for a pump. In such a case a self bailing boat has a scupper like drain plug sized hole. Through hull fittings are below the waterline and are not ever called scuppers. And an outboard boat of this size normally does not have a lot of through hull fittings. I suppose there might be a very small one if it has a depth finder and it usually has a bilge hole but that's about it. Through hulls are more commonly fitted to inboard boats and boats that have living accommodations that need to draw in raw water or expel exhaust. Interesting thing about this is that if they had forgotten to put the drain plug in the boat shouldn't be taking on water if it's up on plane, because when the boat is planning the bilge drain hole is above the water line at the stern. I suppose it possible they either dropped off of plane or were not far enough on to plane uncover the bilge drain hole. Either way they are very fortunate to be alive and safe.

      @lvthud 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That will work

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, my grandfather and some friends did that with his boat when too many people were involved in helping him launch and nobody bothered to put the bilge plug in. They get out of the harbor and into the inlet and realize that water is starting to come up through screw holes in the deck and they beach the boat on a sand bar and realize what has happened. So everybody but my grandfather get out of the boat and empty most of the gear to lighten it and then he runs it's at full throttle up on plane to drain most of the water out of the bilge and runs back to the sandbar and beaches it so they can properly seat the drain plug. Lesson learned, never trust anybody else to check on this stuff always do it yourself if you are the boat owner.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, normally at deck level. On a boat this size they normally might amount to a couple of drain holes in the stern for a self bailing design. It's unlikely an outboard center console of this size has many if any thru hull fittings since it has no need to intake raw water for the motors or any plumbing fixtures. There might be some very small ones where a depth finder/fish finder or speedo are attached to the boat but that would be about it. I suppose if it had a live bait well it might have one for that but that's not all that common on such a small boat.

    Every time I go out, I trim up and any bilge water (from rain or leak) will move to the transom area. Either the lower Bilge pump will kick on or I will switch on the manual switch. If I can’t hear the pump, there is no boating till issue resolved. Second Bilge pump located higher in the bilge area is Automatic. Also critical to have a high capacity manual bilge pump and know how to use it efficiently.

    IF the drain plug WAS not in, they wouldn't know it till they stopped. Going forward, with no drain plug, won't let water in, and any water in the hull will run out anyways. So I doubt the stern was low like that because of water. Am I wrong??

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you are not wrong that is absolutely correct. When my grandfather had this happen they only realized it because they were running at low speed and water started coming through screw holes in the deck from the bilge. They ran the boat up on plane to drain it all back out and then beached her and set the drain plug properly.

  • @DonTruman
    @DonTruman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    IMHO boats should be designed to allow crew to compensate for such problems. E.g.: for any cables/wires/hoses that need to enter the hull, enter high on the hull. Drain plug: an alert of some sort to the skipper that it's not in place. Water coming in: have a means of isolating it, similar to watertight compartments on large vessels. And a high flow bilge pump that uses a turbine in the water to drive it, and therefore as long as the vessel is moving, it can pump out most any leak.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most small boats are designed exactly that way. Through hull fittings on an outboard boat without living accommodations under 20 feet are fairly uncommon.

    🛑🛑 I like this series, however I think the boats need to be divided up into “weight class” or for a better choice of words “length and type boats”
    A small Robalo and a large World Cat should not be judge together in the same “competition”.
    It should 22’ Center Consoles verses 22’ Center Consoles; to better represent boat performance of the boats that day. 🤷‍♂️
    Just a thought 😀👍
