    This is truly the key to this song: “The child has grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb.” You don't have to be a heroin addict to understand this lyric and empathize with it. In my opinion, the song is about loosing faith in childhood dreams, childhood expectations for the possible and the realization that most of us are mediocre and average, despite the endless possibilities we believe were there for us as children. We go to work, we pay the bills, we are trapped and just not realizing it that we've become comfortably numb and accepting our station in life despite our soul's depression.

      Nope, Waters gave an interview where talks about this song specifically. He was ill and the company "doctor" gave him a shot of something to allow him to keep the concert on tract. This song is about that experience.

      And if you want to delve deeper, the reason the music is structure this way is because it is parallels the high or rush you get when taking drugs that make you feel a brief ecstasy, only to be dropped down again in dispair. They do it quite effectively in this song. This is why Pink Floyd's music goes way deeper than many people realize.

    I’m a recovering addict. This song is the epitome of opiate addiction.
    I was constantly seeking oblivion. “Hello..is there anybody in there. Just nod if you can hear me..” what happens during an opiate overdose.
    As addicts we were seeking that comfortable, numb, feeling. We weren't raised this way. We are ashamed of our addiction, yet we continue to self sabotage. Such a sad, lonely, misunderstood place to be.
    At the lowest points in my addiction I had just come to terms with the fact that I was hopeless, helpless and on death’s door. I had made peace with it. The more I used, the more closed off and numb I became. I isolated myself, so I could die in peace and away from everyone who loved me. I was sick and tired, of being sick and tired. I was a horrible disappointment to all of them but I had no self control.
    “I had become comfortable numb”
    Grateful to be alive today. 10 years of sobriety. I have a daughter, a spouse and so much to live for. Every time I hear this song, tears stream down my face. It’s a reminder of how life used to be and how lucky I am to have escaped addiction’s filthy grip ❤️

    "Did you guys just get instantly happier?" - it could be an intentional rollercoaster... the verses are in Bm which can be considered a "dark" key, leading to a very up-lifting chorus that happens to be in D major, a much more "positive" key... The orchestra and harmonies definitely add to it, making you feel as if you're floating. The choruses are played on something called a high strung guitar which includes an open 9th - so very happy sounding... behind it all you have the orchestra playing these descending "scales" in different octaves, that add motion. Beautiful song

    • @JFullerUCSB
      @JFullerUCSB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sure you know this, but for other people reading, D major is also the relative major of B minor (both keys use all the same notes and chords), so it's a seamless transition between moods.

      My father had an illegal copies (becaus of communism) of many rock bands. But he was proud of his PinkFloyd tapes. He did not understand a single word but He cried everytime when he listened them. He always told me, they are not musicans, they are an artists and try to tell something to us. He passed away 3y ago, and he was damn right. They are special.

      Totally agree, I have the same reaction with Dream Theater. "The Spirit Carries On" is a classic example. I am a drummer, I have played in various flavors of metal bands throughout my life, I have MANY influences, including Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, Genesis, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, and of course Pink Floyd., and the list could go on and on. I always value something that I hear, that touches my heart and soul in a meaningful way. Sometimes I hear a song, and read the lyrics and wonder, why didn't I write that? I tend to be the one that writes lyrics in whatever band I might find myself in. Not so much these days, 66 years old, looking to move to Central America to escape the American political insanity, perhaps rejoin a musical community on the other end. Maybe a bit of a "reboot" of my life. I don't really feel all that "old", just matured like a vintage wine, maybe ready to be enjoyed again.

It was very relaxing and fun with all your friends there chatting with the music so loud that you could barely hear each other but you could feel the music clear through your bones and it was amazing. Unfortunately, we all have to grow up and those days have been gone for me since I graduated in 1976. I still do enjoy their music very much.

      I was intently watching her emotional ride, from a brief happy place and then seeing her, as the musical darkness descended, wiping a tear from her eye, transfixed and deeply moved without consciously grasping why, my eyes began leaking and i only wiped my face after it was over, so enthralled i was. What still amazes and touches me about this song is the absolute and truly emotional effect that it continues to have on me and every person that I watch, listening to it for their very first time. From the initial and flowing sense of euphoria when you feel and hear, "there is no pain, you are receiving me" to the more intimate and personal, "when I was a child I had a fever" and "this is not who I am" and then the shift to the darker and more painful "I have become comfortably numb." The range of emotions and expressions are all over the place, but when David Gilmour slips into that haunting solo, following the word "numb" it clicks and the expressions are universal, the tears fill our eyes. I do not know why, but it touches every single one of us in so many deep and different ways. Thank you for letting us watch you listen to and experience an incredibly beautiful song...

      They’ve found that COVID-19 causes changes in the brain that may be inflammatory responses, but they induce vivid dreams and/or hallucinations. I’m so glad you survived to talk about it. xxx

      Thank you for sharing. This is not something we talk about, but I feel such a need to jump into it. Life IS so fleeting, and as far as any of us know, one not to be revisited ever again. How do you feel about “coming back” to it? I am glad you’re here, and just so grateful for these artists who are able to express what words cannot. Beautiful. Stirring. Here’s to living as vividly as we can tolerate, courageously defying the temptation to be “comfortably numb,” and to our highest potential blessed with these human lives 😘💖

    This song has been the perfect song for whatever mood I have ever found myself in. Whether mountain highs or valley lows it hits the spot you need it to hit. The Mona Lisa of music, it follows you wherever you go. Perfection.
