Make sure you are referring to the right disk. For me, "disk2" was the right disk referring to my external hard drive.
"diskutil unmountDisk force disk2"
This command worked for me. Before that I was getting the at least one volume could not be unmounted error.

Dude you saved my life!! Right before my classes started too. Thank you sooo much. Ive looked at sooo many forums and mac911 websites. I cannot thank you enough. After I did the force reset, my computer completely shut off and I thought that I was doomed but when I went back in and did a last Hail Mary to erase my disk it WORKED! And I was able to reinstall.
