Lyonel Strong is the Master of Laws and Lord of Harrenhal. His two sons were lowkey introduced in this episode. The man who has injured foot was Larys Strong and the one smiling at bloody Rhaenyra was Ser Harwin Strong. Pay close attention to these two..
I liked the part where Rhaenyra strolls in with the boar and thr Strongs compliment her. I LIKE the Strongs and Lyonel in particular so far, I hope they (please oh, please!) do not disappoint me.
There was also a scene in this episode where Larys (clubfoot) asks to sit with the ladies who are talking/gossiping amongst each other. He’s using that to his advantage
@@justincredible9593 it’s 172 years… I had great great parents that were only like 78 years older than me and I was born to parents in their 30s. In a world where woman have babies at around 14, 172 years is closer to around 6-8 generations.
Jahaerys is Viserys and Rhaenys's grandfather, btw. Rhaenys is the daughter of Jahaerys's first-born son, and at the time, she herself already had a son that could continue the lineage after her. Viserys is the son of Jahaerys later child. All of Jahaerys's kids ended up dying. That's what made the succession so controversial, because technically, Laenor (the male grandchild of the legitimate heir) had a stronger claim than Viserys did. But the realm did not want to let Rhaenys as queen, and so, here we are. Genetically speaking, this also means that Laenor and Rhaenyra are only second cousins, which means they don't share enough DNA for it to be particularly dangerous
Really confused what they are doing with Laenor. Because the Laenor in this episode is nothing like what was in the books. At least currently. Maybe he becomes more passive and weak as the years past, but they made it seem like he was a Knight in name only while here he actually did some heroic deeds.

The reason the war lasted so long is because the crabfeeder was backed by the free cities. Daemon had a finite amount of troops to attack with over the course of the whole war since he had no reinforcements from the crown. The crabfeeder could be getting men and supplies from his backers. With the caves being a natural counter to the dragons, it was prolonging the battle into a war of attrition. It wasn't until Daemon got pissed off enough to basically suicide charge them to bait out all their forces into the open for them to win the battle.
Love how it portrays the daughter and father are both right and wrong and it shows how viserys had that same predicament of he doesn’t wanna pick and pretty much caused a civil war because of it by no means was any of the choices he had 1 choice was overwhelmingly the good choice
I did too. Viserys has screwed up, but he was right in that not marrying anyone just to spite him is hurting her as well. People are already against her being the heir as it is. Marrying a powerful family could help her back her claim.

I mean... Viserys and Daemon's parents were brother and sister, their grandparents (King Jaehaerys and Good Queen Alyssane) were brother and sister, so Viserys problem isn't that they're siblings, it's truly just because Aegon is a 2 year old. Laenor being Rhaenyra's cousin means nothing to the Targaryens. Remember: Daenerys parents were also brother and sister.
Oh I'm glad you caught how Lord Strong pushed Viserys to finally do something to stepstones. He not only gave him a wonderful advice on getting Laenor as Rhaenyra's husband but as he mentioned how they should pray to survive the battle in the stepstones, thats probably one of the main reasons why viserys decided to finally send some aid.
Jason Lannister's actor also played Ser Hugh of the Vale in season one, the guy that the mountain killed in the jousting tourney. He also played Torstein in Vikings.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this. The dude is the most complex character so far (with Daemon as well) but people seem to be giving him the shaft because of his decisions (which admittedly are sometimes bad). Dude is a good man, thrust into the position of being king, something that I'm not even sure he wanted. Very few times has a book character been better portrayed on TV, this is one of them.
Paddy Considine is an incredible actor. He is perfect for this role and gives Viserys so much depth. Paddy was great in Peaky Blinders as well. And if anyone hasn’t seen Dead Man’s Shoes yet , do so as soon as possible.
In the war council discussion, they were discussing their numbers. They had been reduced to 18 ships. Viserys is sending only 10, and 2,000 men. The Crabfeeder is being backed by Myr, Tyrosh, and Lys, and Dorne is allied to them as well. The Velaryons and Daemon are financing their efforts themselves. Even with dragons, mercs, and household troops, they're at a massive disadvantage to a steady stream of men and material from the Free Cities. Viserys' offer of aid, 3 years later, is a disgusting and insulting show of support. In the hunting tent, Lady Redwine - from the Arbor - tells Rhaenyra that the war IS affecting the realm, and they are actually at war. The Redwines have one of the largest trading fleets in the Seven Kingdoms, and the occupation in the stepstones has effectively cut them off from the Stormlands, the Crownlands, the Vale, the eastern side (and largest port) of the North, and the free cities of Pentos and Bravos - who are also blocked from their own trade routes. In every real aspect Viserys has absolutely failed his kingdom and potential allies.
Since you guys mentioned about Ceraxes fleeing with Daemon during the opening, it’s likely due to Daemon’s Uncle Aemon (Ceraxes original rider) who was killed by an arrow through the neck while In battle with Ceraxes. So he likely views arrows as a very bad sign for his rider. Also he immediately shields Daemon with his wings from the arrows which is great.
Viserys has ruled over a really long time of peace. He's not that bad of a king I guess then. He's one of the best and complex characters on the show. The group needs to chill a little with the Viserys hate.

Mostly the woke people I would say, as fathers are considered a lowly breed in western society. I think for his time he is a great father and he is really trying to defy the hundred year old tradition to make sure his realm accept his daughter as the rightful heir he literally is the only ally his daughter has in the realm for now and Rhaeneyra has constantly given him a hard time like daemon. I think so far other than being the first born Rhaeneyra has shown no qualities on any front may it be political, diplomatic or leadership that proves that she will be a good queen a good warrior or dragon rider YES but a good queen NO, i understand that she is still quite young but she is a royal and heir to the throne and she should start acting like it instead throwing tantrums over every small decision her father takes and than just assume that he hates her and wants to replace her. Also, people who are watching this show needs to realize that just because we know a character is bad does not mean the other characters also know that they are living the story not watching it.
You gotta think that Daemon was fighting this war for 3 years for himself not for the benefit of anyone but his own gain. For him to be failing and his brother to help would be the biggest blow to one’s ego so that’s why he lashed out
I hope I'm not the only one here who actually thought the best scene in this episode was Laenor Valeryon riding his Birthright Dragon Seasmoke into battle for the first Time. That was the pivotal moment of the episode for me. The epic music playing when it was revealed at his young age he is a dragon rider. He was actually the one also on the council at the shore seeing that his cousin/uncle should be used as bait. Thank goodness Daemon and him agreed. Daemon and Laenor have a Great Warring strategy connection as Uncle/Cousin to Nephew. Also Seasmoke has the ability to breathe hot dragon air to create Sea smoke like fog, which I'm surprised many people did not realize reacting . That's why Seasmoke was so good at being camouflaged with her or his pale skin amongst the smoke gray air, camaflouged. Laenor Valeryon was used to riding sea smoke close to the water, and of course from the mists of the water, Sea Smoke would give cover of fog while exhaling its breathe while always flying low to the Sea with His/Her Dragon Blood rider, Laenor Valeryon.
Love the fact that this episode is chock full of symbolism from Celtic and some other traditions. The white deer symbolising among other things divine right of kings. The slaying of the wild boar, war, specifically courage and ferocity in war. So Rhaenyra has symbolically been given the divine right to rule, no matter that Otto says otherwise to Alicent, and she is willing to get her hands bloody and dirty in war if pushed that far. Very nicely done.
Yknow, I put myself in Daemon's shoes, he's been sent away by his brother over something he said and we, the audience, didn't see (so who knows how he said that thing). Then he tried to get his brother's attention by stealing an egg, announcing he was to be wed and to have a child, and Viserys did nothing. Then he goes to war for the Kingdom, for THREE whole years, and Viserys does nothing. Then all the sudden Viserys comes and is like "okay we'll win this bro ily xoxo" like? I'd smash the messenger in the face too and I'd win that war before Viserys' men came too lmfao. Who does he think he is heh?? Thing is, as Daemon said on episode 1, to him, Dragon's blood runs thick, and Viserys has done nothing but abandoning his brother over "kingly" things, like "ruh duh he defied my orders, I was too busy ignoring the crabfeeder's threats and marrying 15 year olds, yknow" - not to mention, producing more and more heirs that would just take the Throne from Daemon after decades of him believing he'd be chosen as heir. Viserys literally let Otto and the politics of the realm come between him and his brother (and partially between him and his daughter). Just like Rhaenyra feels betrayed and alone and angry, these are the same feelings Daemon feels, left alone fighting and possibly dying in a war that would save the Kingdom if won (only Viserys' blatant refusal to face reality was the reason he didn't do anything, it certainly was not the smart decision not to do anything). On episode 3 we see how lonely all three Targaryens are, even Viserys, in the middle of his court and people licking his boots to further their ambitions, emotionally, he's mostly alone (kind and generous Alicent being the only exception, which is why he's developped feelings for her). At this point, if Daemon isn't pissed as hell at his brother, well, Viserys would be pretty lucky I guess.
Okay and from Viserys' shoes there's zero proof that he ever "abandoned" his brother. For years nothing was expected of Daemon but to be an heir. Then Viserys gives his brother an army of 2000 men... then the same brother fumbled within like a week and couldn't defend his own words at the family's lowest. Then he reveals that he's basically punishing Viserys for not making him the Hand, even though nothing is as politically relevant as being the adult and able male heir! So he disciplines Daemon in private even though the disrespect was public enough, and Daemon's response after being allowed to "seize Dragonstone" is to steal the very egg that his niece picked for the same dead nephew he insulted! On top of that he lies about expecting a child so it's not like he's expanding the bloodline, for someone who stands on family so much. And then Daemon absconds with a member of the council to force the country into a greater war, only to have the audacity to draw a stalemate because the enemy decided to hide in some caves? That's why the people around you without a dragon need help? Daemon is amazing but everything is a tantrum with him. From Viserys' POV it's like Daemon has made up his own game and it's a family-only affair.
I understand both Viserys and Daemon here. He did not abandon Daemon, he loves his brother as does Daemon loves Viserys, their relationship is complicated and I agree Viserys is foolish for letting Otto get in between their relationship, it only got worse. Why would Viserys help in a war he DID NOT start? He was right in waiting for them to ask aid before he did anything, he said to Alicent how him trying to aid the war would make him look weak (not that he isn't, but it's not good to be letting that show for Westeros), and he has all the right to not help a war he didn't wish to start (he wanted to solve it using diplomacy instead). And oh if you think the war on the Stepstones was a good deal, oh my sweet summer child, just wait for the consequences when the Dance starts. It'll backfire greatly to Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenyra's cause. Just wait.
@@housekasces He literally did abandon his brother though. Shunting him around from station to station to keep him busy. Making him marry into the Vale which is far away from Kings Landing. And he didnt "fumble" anything with the Goldcloaks. He was actually effective for once. He went out and punished known criminals who the Kingdom just allowed to run around murdering and raping as they pleased because they couldnt be bothered to do anything about them. Daemons best position would be as the Hand of the King. No one cares about Viserys as much as Daemon and no one would have his back more. But instead Viserys has Otto Hightower telling him what to do and manipulating the Kingdom which Daemon clearly sees but cannot convince Viserys of. So he gets some shitty message his brother said, delivered from Otto of something without any context and then essentially banishes his brother from Kings Landing. Viserys and Daemon would be perfect ruling together. They both make up for what the other lacks. Viserys has patience for when its needed and a softer heart, while Daemon is willing to act when its needed and the will to do what is necessary. Its exactly why Otto has sowed the seeds of dissent between the brothers. Because he could not manipulate Viserys easily with Daemon at his side. Otto has Viserys convinced that Daemon would be the "second coming of Maegor" which is BS. Daemon is not that kinda guy.
@@ComicCrossing By fumble I didn't mean attacking the criminals, but the perspective of letting his mouth fumble his way out of the job for a speech that really just didn't need to happen. Why do people always bring this moronic logic, just because it has dragons doesn't mean it can now have the Harry Potter's flying car because it's all fantasy lol Regardless, the Pugs in Pre medical times looks completely different from modern pugs with proper snouts.
I love that every choice Viserys makes that people approve of bc it makes him a better father is the wrong one for a king to make. The contradiction between the two is great
Almost ten years of rule and the kingdom isn't crumbling at the time this show starts. The succession being the first major thing to rear its' head along with crab man. 10 years is a long time in places like this where lifespan is likely very short. Visarys didn't just inherit "good times" but continued them for almost a decade in a place where things can change quickly.
In the books the Crabfeeder didn't have greyscale. In the show he does but he also has scars on his body like Jorah had. None of his men were shown to have it so it's likely he has been treated over the years but the disease was not fully stopped. If his men don't have it I doubt he's contagious, Daemon wont have it.
Pugs are an ancient breed of dog, with roots dating back to 400 B.C. Most historians agree that the breed originated in China, where they were bred as companion animals for the wealthy. The army the Triarchy had was much larger than the forces Corlys and Daemon had. They also were backed by some of the most powerful people in the Free Cities. For Daemon and company it really was a war of attrition. It was the Triarchy and their numbers versus Corlys and Daemon forces and a couple dragons which made it a somewhat even fight. I can only describe the Crabfeeder as a tutorial boss or one of the first bosses you fight in a video game. Due to time jumps the War for the Stepstones is more of a character defining moment for Daemon than anything else.
@Rick King 22 its a joke that the actor that plays him kinda looks like the Barstool Sports guy, you may have seen his "pizza reviews" where he just gets a pizza n walks outside the place n eats a slice.
I think armies were much more prepared for dragons back then when they existed than in the GOT times. They had fiery arrows on the ready and a contingency plan.
The issue was they had no way of getting the whole army or the leader out of the cave during the day. They were taking a huge risk using Daemon as bait. They didn't want the king's army to come and steal the glory of the war. This was a last stand of sorts.
I mean, Westeros has been in the Middle Ages for 10000 years. More than enough time to breed pugs. Maybe the Valyrian Freehold made them? 😂 They dabbled in crossbreeding before the doom.
42:30, the festival Hunt however was held in The Woodland,s which is not that far from Kings Landing. So it was actually pretty much a short Journey to carry such luxury only miles away. It's not like they were riding to Winterfell honestly.
Never read the books but I’m going to assume Rhaenyra and Daemon somehow end up together because there’s no other way for a pure Targaryen bloodline to continue on at this point in the story
I have read the books so won't comment on if it does or doesn't happen, but the Targaryens always also wed outside of their own house to be fair, it was just that incest was also very common. There are Arryns, Baratheons, Royces, Velaryons and Hightowers all in the bloodline within like 2 or 3 generations of Targaryens at this time. Rhaenyra's grandfather was an Arryn with 0 Targaryen blood so she's not "pure". Plenty of time for Viserys, Rhaenyra and Daemon to parent young Targaryens to bonk each other.
@@duggs4456 ah interesting. I knew they do marry outside of their bloodline, like Daemon and Jon’s dad have done, but I assumed only pure Targaryens have the silver hair. And I do know there is a bastard war at some time in the history so there’s gotta be a way for a Targaryen heir to live and win in the end
The dragons don't do well against Guerilla warfare, which is what the crab feeder and co applied here. That is why Aegon was never able to conquer Dorne, and why Dorne is not yet part of the Kingdom at this point in time, because Dorne used Guerilla warfare against Aegon and resisted the invasion successfully.
Daemon didn't say a word this episode. The idea of being undermined by failing to defeat the Crabfeeder and require aide from his brother set his heart ablaze in Dragon flame, pushing him to draw out the enemy from their caves by himself. SAVAGE 😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈
"Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century and were popularized in Western Europe by the House of Orange of the Netherlands, and the House of Stuart."
Jason Lannister is actually played by the same actor who plays Tyland Lannister in the previous episodes (I guess twins run in the family). Since Jefferson Hall looks quite different as Jason (the long hair helps), I didn't realize at first he was playing both roles. We're supposed to get a few scenes with both of them in shot since Hall mentioned acting against a double in interviews.
Sure, we can lure them out, but they would probably not be lured out by anyone, they had to use someone of very high stature as bait, and when Daemon got the letter, he decided, either I go as bait or big brother saves the day, and he decided I either win this now or die.
Important to remember that Lionel supported Daemon and the goldcloaks, he isn't loyal to Otto. I think he genuinely just represents law and order and is loyal/trustworthy. It's a shame that Viserys is suspicious of him but not Otto.
One detail that isn't fully explained in the show is that there are 13 islands in the Stepstones. Corlys and Daemon have been taking all of them one by one and its only this last one; Bloodstone, the biggest of them; thats been giving them trouble, mainly because the pirates would just retreat into the cave system whenever a dragon showed up, they'd conduct night raids to sabotage Velaryon ships and if the ground forces moved in they'd get slaughtered by the archers on the cliffside.
Knowing how the Dance of the Dragons ends, I think Viserys is essentially a Robert Baratheon without the rebellion. A Robert Baratheon without the 'fire' to fight and finding actual love. Their stories contrast each other in that they are essentially opposites who basically meet a similar ending and in the end their legacy is town down by their successors.
23:06 I'm tired of people saying his pronunciation is wrong or weird, people do have different accents and cadence just like in the real world, everyone pronounces things differently especially based on the region in real life. We heard it being said two different ways already from this show from Rhaenyra and now Laenor. Dany in the og games of thrones is not the blueprint on how it should be said, also she had to get lessons on the language so she could be saying it weird too. No one knows the original pronunciation. I'm so tired of people thinking they know how something should be shown or said in TV shows now a days. It's not just in this show or this reaction. It's in others too. Also the way he says it is realistic he's not trying to be cool he's trying to help win a war so he's yelling, wind in his face, and adrenaline going crazy, while also just having fun with it, it seems like it was his first time being on his dragon in battle actually doing damage.
Daenerys didn't learn the proper pronunciation because of how she grew up. The professional linguist the GoT people hired to flesh out and write the entire Valyrian language literally said the way Rhaenerya and Daemon are speaking is the proper high Valyrian way to pronounce things. These guys always have the worst most uninformed takes. Idk how they are so popular on youtube.
@@suddenimpulse030 That's what I mean Laenor is saying it in his own right way. Like I said even in the real world everyone says things differently, they even have two people on this couch that have different accents and cadence. So I don't see how they could think Laenor was saying it wrong.
Pugs have existed for millenia, apparently first bred in ancient China as pets for the rich, so their existing in a medieval fantasy world isn't out of the realm of possibility. Also, they have dragons so having a pug shouldn't be what breaks the suspension of disbelief...

Ahhhh I like that smirk he did
Especially Larys (who is dubbed "The Clubfoot" for the reason he limps). If they stick to the book, he'll be this series' version of Littlefinger.
There was also a scene in this episode where Larys (clubfoot) asks to sit with the ladies who are talking/gossiping amongst each other. He’s using that to his advantage
The woman with the pug was likely Lady Olena Tyrell's great-grandmother.

Lord Lyonel Strong is by far the best member of Viserys's council when it comes to actually advising him on what is best for the Realm.
Daemon’s command just fits perfectly by Matt’s portrayal and Laenor riding Seasmoke was in congruent with the books, stunning indeed!
Really confused what they are doing with Laenor. Because the Laenor in this episode is nothing like what was in the books. At least currently. Maybe he becomes more passive and weak as the years past, but they made it seem like he was a Knight in name only while here he actually did some heroic deeds.

Daemon is such a petty chaotic bastard i love him lmfao
Marrying a powerful family could help her back her claim.
in time they will see how Otto was right in his proposal to betroth them
@@nasroohb9489 not really. Marrying them would still end badly. Otto would never content himself with Aegon just being king consort. The second Rhaenyra ascends, he will plot to poison her and have Aegon take over. Maybe they'll wait long enough for her to have Aegon's heir, but as long as any of Allicent Hightower's kids live, her claim will never be secure. Viserys is making a lot of sense and the advice he is being given is also useful. Reactors just need to get their heads out of the 21st Century lol
I thought Pat might have had a stroke when he said "Geneva Conventions"
That was Laenor Velaryon with his dragon Seasmoke

Viserys is the best character. Especially considering in the book he has no personality at all.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this. The dude is the most complex character so far (with Daemon as well) but people seem to be giving him the shaft because of his decisions (which admittedly are sometimes bad).

Rhaenyra returning to camp OST is SO GOOD. Chills everywhere

The pug is one of the most ancient breeds of dogs dating back to about 400 B.C. in our time. Well before our current medival times

Never read the books but I’m going to assume Rhaenyra and Daemon somehow end up together because there’s no other way for a pure Targaryen bloodline to continue on at this point in the story
Yeah they do
I have read the books so won't comment on if it does or doesn't happen, but the Targaryens always also wed outside of their own house to be fair, it was just that incest was also very common.

Pugs are an over 2000 year old breed. lol
Pugs shouldn’t be a shock; Bichon Frise were around a century before the War of the Roses which is what Game of Thrones was based on.
the way matt smith didn't have any lines this episode and still delivered the best performance
Casterly Rock is built on a gold mine and that mine runs out of gold during Baratheons reign
bro you better not stop, we all hooked now 😂
They’re riding dragons into battle but the pug seems implausible?
I think at this point I'm watching these episodes and discussions right now to get frustrated with your takes. Love it
Ngl, Viserys might not be the best father but he is trying.
Hahaha not Pat mentioning the Sacovia Accords lol
