Remember when Capcom games were bright, celebrating their franchise history and made us laugh? Tatsunoko vs Capcom, puzzle fighter and this game shows how it's done!
Tatsunoko vs Capcom was one of the reasons I wanted a Wii. When I was young it was called Battle of the planets and we had no idea what anime meant. Probably had nothing to do with the original but I still liked it.
its not butchering at art style is just different and its a side story to boot the SD or Chibi games are just pure fun and that Gamespot review/article is rubbish
He looks up old criticism and basically uses them to troll the game. Does it every video he makes. He is a click baiter and essentially trolls for views.
@Porfirio Rubirosa ? Reception? The market was flooded with fighters then lol this was obviously a Novelty game so why compare it to Tekken or any Major players then? He looks up editor trolls to reference back then, those who even cared to play this spoke highly of it, so to say this game was received poorly is odd seeing that most didn't receive the game at all and those who did liked it lol
@Porfirio Rubirosa CPS2 graphics hold up and it was a cute and simple game in the right ways. As this video does you read a little too far into something that never intended on you looking this far into it in the first place.......
I got this back in high school, but I think it suffered because "everyone" had moved onto 3D fighters by that time. The ones who did give Pocket Fighter a chance liked it... *but* not enough to buy theirnown copy. =/
Pocket Fighters is unironicaly my favorite 2D fighter. One thing you didn’t touch on are all the crazy things going on in the background. Canny is in the game. She’s having Blanka rub suntan location on her back.
Too japanese? What is "too japanese" about making capcom characters more cartoonish and goofier for a fighting game made more about humor than serious fighting? Dang, you must think that Looney Toons are japanese or something.
Correction: Street Fighter BUT Too Anime! Anyways, I love this game. It's a perfect game for begginers or for those who just wants to have a good time and not worry about the complexities or intricacies of what current fighting games does today.
I absolutely LOVED this game when it came out! I remember playing this game more than most of the other version of SF with the exception of 3rd strike. I wish Capcom would make a sequel or a versus version with Tatsunoko. Definitely not too Japanese!
I like the exploration of the use of Super Deformed (SD) characters. The best example of SD "ironic cuteness" for my money is Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti for the Famicom (Japan only). If you know Splatterhouse, it is not cute! Leech monsters, guts falling out, occultism, possessions, a guy with a sack over his head and chainsaw arms... But Namco made a cute version! Absurdist humor such as this seems to be pretty popular in Japan, and I actually find it entertaining as well. Anyway, for what it's worth, the game is now available in the recently released Namco Museum Archives Vol 1.
I love Pocket Fighter. I was really into Japanese entertainment of any type, serious or silly, and I found the chibi syles for comedy very fun. Being a fan of Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, I dug this game and had no problem wrapping my head around it. Pocket Fighter was great for its casual gameplay, silly tranformations, and all the background easter eggs. Since the menu and music settings were reminiscent of Street Fighter Alpha 2, it further cemented that game's influence on fighters at the time, and is why I miss the Alpha series. Since Capcom had the Marvel fighters and had JUST released X-Men vs Street Fighter around this time, I was expecting to see X-Babies vs Pocket Fighter not just for the silly effect, but also because the X-Babies were part of X-Men canon in the comics, being cutie versions of the Marvel mutants created by Mojo as a means of capitalizing on their popularity. In fact, had the game come to fruition, I would have expected a decidedly uncute Mojo as the final boss the characters would fight against. Sadly, history has shown that I was the only one who had this dream. Great video as always! Looking forward to your Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers 3 video!
👆 I like the way you think! What you say brain-sparked some variations on the idea. A possible alt title could be "X-Babies VS Gem (or Pocket) Fighters". That wording might allow for bringing more of the non-SF chibi characters in the mix. And of course, you could try to have sequels of *that*. "Mini-Marvels VS Gem/Pocket Fighters", "Mighty Mini-Marvels VS Capcom Crystal Fighters", and other variations on the naming convention. The major question would be what the best characters to have on the roster would be; you'd want to pick ones that would benefit most from the chibi treatment and also aren't already represented by the "Costume Combo" transformations. 🤔
It took me a while to get back to post this but I came up w/some character options for such a game, mostly based on characters who've already been in Capcom fighters. Marvel: Wolverine Storm Iceman Sentinel Magneto Spider-Man Iron Man (Switched out for Sentinel?) Hulk (With Juggernaut and Colossus transformations?) Captain America? Capcom: Donovan (Back from Puzzle Fighter) Devilotte (Also back from Puzzle Fighter), or replace w/Jin Saotome? Guile or Charlie/Nash Captain Commando Strider Hiryu Wesker Zero (X Series)
As a kid growing up in the 90's in California (NA), this game was always being played at my Nickle City Arcade. I thought it looked 'sick' (slang word for awesome, not bad) because it looked like Anime Street Fighter! Then a Alpha 2 Machine showed up the next year and I Literally shit my pants (of excitement and joy, not disgust).
I still have my PS1 copy of Pocket Fighter and absolutely love it! Videogame magazine journalists are usually just wrong about 80 percent of the time because this game was charming, creative, and just a pure joy to play! I would love to see a new Pocket Fightkig game for current gen consoles!
Crazy, wild, cute, but dang so addictive. One cannot resist the cuteness. This is a fun treasure. But learning how it came to be, and inspired by, also interesting. This is something we totally need again.
This game has great mechanics and mind-games. Unblockable special button attacks, high-low mixups with the costume combos, conventional combos from normal attacks into specials/mighty combos, the "burst" feature for emergencies, the tug-of-war over gem possession, levelling up special moves... The list goes on. It's a very deep game underneath the cute presentation.
There's also an excellent Batman spin-off comic book drawn by artist Dustin Nguyen in Chibi style called Batman 'Lil Gotham. I collected this series when it was in publication and it was quite refreshing compared to most contemporary comic books. I had no idea that it was actually a thing until I saw this video and easily recognized it. This was a great, informative video, as always! 🎩
I found this game to be delightfully fun. A friend let me borrow it for the Sega Saturn back in the day and I loved it. It's lighthearted, humorous, and simple enough for fighting game newbies to get in on.
None of my friends seemed to mind the chibi style. Puzzle Fighter HD Remix was played ultra-competitively at my house all the time. I still love it. Pocket Fight was a huge hit too and still remains one of my favorite Capcom fighting games.
This game ended up being my first introduction to the Tessa Character. So it holds a special place in my heart, yet I will admit its not a serious fighting. With all its flaws though I still find it to be hilarious fun. Especially with Tessa.
I bought this game on PS1 when it first released in the US. I've always been heavily into RPGs, so at the time, I wanted kind of a palette cleanser. FuncoLand (GameStop's original name) had a deal at the time for half off a used copy of Super Puzzle Fighter with purchase of a new Pocket Fighter. 2 birds... I loved both games. They were both hilarious and loads of fun. Both of my sisters (17 and 9 at the time) would play Puzzle Fighter for ungodly amounts of time for many years. My little sister even dipped her toes into Pocket Fighter. That was her gateway into fighting games. Today, she regularly whips me and both of our brothers in just about every 2D fighter we play together.
Underrated fighting game. It's amazing. The punch and kick combos that have different outcomes are hilarious. And the way Special Moves and Super Moves were changed/updated were stellar. Love this game. Other interesting mechanics were also tossed in. This is one of my favorite fighters of all time.
I have always wanted a new version of this. Using HD 2D graphics. Cel shaded or something. With so many more Capcom characters available and possible access to Marvel too it'd be amazing.
I really like SD character style, I played Super Robot Wars on the SNES just to see all my favorite robots in that form :D And Puzzle Fighter was tons of fun because when you hit a combo, the characters would wound each other accordingly!
My friend got this for PlayStation when I was in school and we all thought it was pretty stupid but we all played it and it was really fun, I still go back to it every few years and it's still good for a few rounds here and there it's not exactly skill based and felt pretty 'pick up and play' stress free gaming.
Played this in the arcades, then got it for the PS one, & was a very pleasant surprise that it was included in SF Alpha anthology. Now I know that you said "I love you long time." But being a child of the 80's all I heard was "Me love you long time." 😂
A review of the Wonderswan version of this game would be awesome considering that I play Pocket Fighter for Wonderswan almost daily and carry my Wonderswan with me more often than not. I must state that I am from the United States.
It's easy to understand why this game wasn't popular in the West back then since the West only liked gritty and tough stuff. It's great to see us appreciating this game now as this game is honestly amazing.
I actually really like this game and play it often on my Vita. There are two types of people out there. Those that GET the japanese sense of humor in this game, and those that don't. I personally really love this style of humor.
I remember being super-excited to get this game when I was twelve. Sure, it looked "cutesy", but I loved Puzzle Fighter and I loved Street Fighter and mixing the two couldn't possibly fail to me. And it didn't- I got a lot of play out of Pocket Fighter.
The only game Dan was an awesome fighter( Besides SF4!)! I loved the crazy imagination and animation behind this exciting game! I was lucky to play the arcade before my mall started downsizing the machines and immediately bout the PS1 game! Still 💘'n it!
Firstly, the Gamespot review seems to not understand that the character selected in Puzzle Fighter impacts how gems are sent to your opponent, so picking a character matters. It's a nice touch to add to the game. Second, I'm amazed people disliked this game. It was such a nice casual fighting game. In the days of Killer Instincts, Tekkens, UMK3s, SF3s, having a nice easy to pick up and play fighting game was a blast and a very welcome step back. It played well, was fun, wasn't overly technical... Most fighting games light on depth were every light on fun, but not this one. I feel like anyone not able to find some enjoyment out of this game is being closed minded to the art style. I never went to the arcade without dropping a few quarters into this one.
For me personally I like the cutesy chibi style either as the primary or alternative for a franchise. I dont see it as strange or bizarre, especially when it shows that a niche market shows up for it.
Street Fighter Alpha was heavily inspired by the Street Fighter animated film. In fact the director of the alpha series said without the anime movie there would be no Alpha series. In the Japanese rom there’s even a special tag team match against dictator that was based on the Animated film finale and used the same theme song. Anyway pocket fighter is a spin off of Super puzzle fighter II turbo which art style is based on the alpha series which was very anime esque. Super deformed chibi style art originally started due to hardware limitations in classic retro games. Obviously they couldn’t render big sprites on screen so many games in the 80s would shrink down the character sprites and the super deformed aesthetic with big eyes could give the characters expression.
Back in the 90's I played and loved it, I hoped to see the leveling system in other fighting games Could you talk about more SNK fighting games? I feel SNK is a little bit under represented in this series
It was smart of Capcom to reuse the sprites from Super Puzzle Fighter for another game. That saved them a lot of time on game production. I wish Darkstalker's Donovan could have made it into the game since he was in Super Puzzle Fighter.
What? This game was awesome! And it was the point of it not being serious , but more of a fun comedy parody game of the various games in the series. I loved creating the funny "costume" combo combinations. This game still had a lot of depth to trick your opponent through different strategies. i am surprised since you like smash bros which is a cartoony non serious game. But we all have our tastes and i won't be a jerk about different opinions :) Me and my friends loved this game (and still do) and laughed a lot playing it.
This game was just TOO ANIME, but BEFORE Anime achieve Huge Mainstream Success in the West. Remember that this came out about a YEAR BEFORE Pokemon hit the American Airwaves. It was simply released TOO EARLY! If this was released during the PS2 Era, I think it would have had MUCH more success. It's definitely a good game, even Justin Wong has praised it. There's a lot of fun to be had, as a non serious fighter. An the Aesthetics are all REALLY nice. It was a HUGE love letter to Capcom fighting games and I wish more people gave it the love it deserves.
Wasn't too Japanese for me, watching, Akira, Guyver, Moldiver, Tenchi Muyo etc i understood the look they was going for, I had a cracked copy of the Japanese Rival School game on PS1 the whole thing was spoke to me anime fighting game. If anything Pocket Fighter is underated.
First played this back in the day when i was 9 turning 10. I remember i was sleeping over at my father's place along with his ex's (before they broke up) son and his family and friends. That morning was awful due to being accused of sabotage. My father took me to EB Games (Before GameStop took over my local area) and he gotten me not only a Naruto game (The first and original Ultimate Ninja just in case anyone wonders) but also Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, which this game was part of. I wish Puzzle Fighter was part of the compilation too since i like that game slightly better than i do Pocket Fighter. I didnt think too much of how the characters looked and how different it was given the fact i myself was a child, so it worked out with me in Capcom's favor. There was times i viewed it as weird (certain moves and the last cutsene in the credits), but for the most part i liked this game. I still get a kick out of playing it today, especially when i hit my opponents so hard they orbit the world (literally). I have both the western and Japanese release (Difference between the two is that the Japanese version has audio dialogue in the cutscenes of the game) One thing i never found an answer to my question was...... Why did the PS2 version contain not only the music from Puzzle Fighter, some unknown tracks, and few songs from different games like Ibuki's theme from SF3, Zangief's theme from MVC1, and Tessa's theme straight from Red Earth. Plus im seeing some very different stages in this video. Could they be located in the console ports from the 90s by any chance?
Hello there me from 2 to 3 years ago! I just found out that was the desert stage from a mode exclusive to the Saturn and PS1 versions of Pocket Fighter called "Running Battle" mode. It is also the same stage where that one upbeat unused track in Street Fighter Alpha Anthology comes from. It is called "Never Give Up" by Isao Abe. I still got no clue why Street Fighter 3, MVC1, Puzzle Fighter, and Red Earth/Warzard music is in the PS2 version of Pocket Fighter tho.
I got to play this on Dreamcast a couple times, a HUGE amount of fun; even more fun then Night Warriors. I wish this was not as scoffed at by the larger community when it came out.
I play this on ps1 still... Super fun and still gives u a challenge... Def not an easy breezy game but its fun... They should give us a sequel i wouldn't mind it

I personally really like the art style of the game. That part you showed where Chun-Li done this little love confession to Zangief was pretty entertaining. I am not saying I would like all the games in this style but one once in a while can be an interesting change up. It gets a pass from me.
THIS GAME!!! so good! The Capcom fan service, easter eggs, cameos etc. This game was just plain Fun, not gritty and serious.

My oldest best friend and I used to waste hours wailing on each other with this game on the PSOne! We loved this!
I'm a snob against the PS version, it's missing too much animation.
Ah, another high quality Top Hat Gaming Man video..
I actually really like this game and play it often on my Vita.
There are two types of people out there. Those that GET the japanese sense of humor in this game, and those that don't.
I personally really love this style of humor.
I remember me and my roommate would play this game all day and night. Fun times. LOL. Love the game. Great video.
One of those games i need to get for my Saturn, very cool game.
You just put me in the mood to play it now. Thanks 👍!
Loving all these street fighter 2 videos right now
I remember being super-excited to get this game when I was twelve. Sure, it looked "cutesy", but I loved Puzzle Fighter and I loved Street Fighter and mixing the two couldn't possibly fail to me. And it didn't- I got a lot of play out of Pocket Fighter.
I adored this game so much growing up and it had a really fun fighting system
The only game Dan was an awesome fighter( Besides SF4!)! I loved the crazy imagination and animation behind this exciting game! I was lucky to play the arcade before my mall started downsizing the machines and immediately bout the PS1 game! Still 💘'n it!
Dan literally uses his dead dad in his special moves😭😭😂
I love this game especially since it came out the same month my son was born on 7-24-98.
I really loved this game tho I don't know why Game Spot was so confused lol. But I am girl so 🤷♀️
Street Fighter Alpha was heavily inspired by the Street Fighter animated film.
I love this game. So much fun! It is a classic gem. Darkstalkers with Street Fighter is so awesome.
16:35,I love me some Ibuki. ^_^
SDs will always be the best content for out of context-ness.
...howdy from Nashville Tennessee! you have some fantastic Capcom content! I can't believe I haven't subscribed. FIXED IT
This, Dark Stalkers 3, Rival Schools, and Alpha 3 were my complete and total main staples when the PS1 was THE thing to have.
Back in the 90's I played and loved it, I hoped to see the leveling system in other fighting games
Could you talk about more SNK fighting games? I feel SNK is a little bit under represented in this series
definitely going to look for that Japan exclusive Street Fighter FMV game now!
But we all have our tastes and i won't be a jerk about different opinions :)
Me and my friends loved this game (and still do) and laughed a lot playing it.
Rival school oh man the nostalgia
I watched Muppet Babies growing up. So
I didnt mind the chibi art style. After Virtue Fighter kids I just assumed this was Capcom's cute fighter.
I thought u would mention that this game is obviously the 1st one to show that MVC3 gameplay b4 MVC3 even existed but this was a gd watch
Your Ken skills are strong!
I play this on ps1 still... Super fun and still gives u a challenge... Def not an easy breezy game but its fun... They should give us a sequel i wouldn't mind it
I love this game First played it on Playstation. Would love to see ports and a sequel.
Lots of references and easter eggs in the game. Felicia changes to Megaman. lol
I remember playing this on my Ps2 and it was fun plus cute that Chun lee went to Jill valentine mode XD
Pocket fighter reminds me of 2 other games,SNK's far east of eden-kabuki clash & a flash fighting game i once saw called street fighter jr.
I played this a lot. I used zangief. Grab then opponent will bounce off the wall then air grab to slam down.
I was into anime back in the 90s so I loved playing this game, it's pretty solid to be honest
I just wish M.Bison/Balrog was in pocket fighter as a selectable fighter. It would’ve been cool to see his boxing skills implanted and the funny thing he would have done.
Mr. 🎩 great job job the video hope all is well with you.👍 Have you Covered gone over Night.Slashers or The Take Over, Night.of the round?? Having played all them myself. I can say there good beat'em ups..
Capcom doesn't even know they're sitting on gold. Pocket Fighter and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo collection both with online gameplay. It will sell like hot cakes.
I personally really like the art style of the game. That part you showed where Chun-Li done this little love confession to Zangief was pretty entertaining. I am not saying I would like all the games in this style but one once in a while can be an interesting change up. It gets a pass from me.
For Asian ACG fans this SD art style is so normal that hardly anyone would question its existence
