    If at worst, one could use empties to make up for messed up bone orientations with a copy transform constraint. Just in case someone has messed up bone orientations and wanna know a quick and dirty way. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us.

    I'm learning 3D rigging at the moment and for the life of me I'm really struggling to get good shoulder deformations going for muscular male characters in particular, specifically ones with defined deltoid topology. I've tried a lot of different standard approaches, with upper arm twist joints and all that, but when the arms go over the head and the elbows forward, the armpit and clavicle area always crinkles. Do you think you could someday do a quick tutorial on your favorite solutions for solving this problem for a videogame friendly workflow? It seems to be a common pain point for new modelers getting into rigging.

    • @gower1973
      @gower1973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Blender you can use shape keys, so when the rig is in a certain position, the deformed geometry is changed so it stops pinching and crinkles and other undesired deformations, have a look into them.

    • @KobanWanko
      @KobanWanko ปีที่แล้ว

      If your shoulder topology is already as animation friendly as it can be, then might I suggest an attempt at cheating it with shape keys and drivers linked to the individual rotational axis of the deformation arm bones?
      I used a similar method to achieve near perfect butt deformations for mixing the shape keys for both bending over and lifting the legs simultaneously.
      Here's a video tutorial for you (it's in Japanese, but you'll catch on quick): th-cam.com/video/_0Ug5aq-CZQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @tailwindmechanics7454
      @tailwindmechanics7454 ปีที่แล้ว

      For games you need to ask yourself what kind of poses is this character realistically going to be put in, and also think of where the camera is going to be and how far away, and rig accordingly. I've often suffered from this problem when attempting to make a rig that is highly versatile, but often that is wasted time. An alternative to shape keys/blend shapes is to have an additional bone that you can drive in the engine via a rig or via code, that corrects for any strange pinching. Or by simply offsetting the position of an existing bone in certain poses. It's arguably a hacky compromise, but if it is more practical and saves significant time then it's the right compromise to make

    • @PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN
      @PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For game ready rig I would avoid shapekeys, and use helper bones.

    • @bongqhi1250
      @bongqhi1250 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN may you tell why do you avoid shape key ? i think game developer always use 3d software to animate then import the animation to game engine.. 🤔 if that's the workflow, shape key is not a problem since it will be baked while exported..

    I tried this out and it worked but I went back to the file later to find that local location checkbox didn't seem to change anything anymore whether it was on her off at had the prior behavior of being aligned to the bones axies.
    I don't know why unchecking the box doesn't work when it did before so some help would be nice.
    Edit: so unchecking the box DOES work for every bone in my rig except the IK hand controler...
    IDK why
    Edit 2: I figured out what happened. it was because I parented the hand control bone to an intermediary bone aligned with the hand. Guess I just have to find a workaround for having the IK hand bone move with the torso

    Is that dude's shoulder axis halfway between his head and belly button and his neck is a third of a meter long, or is his collarbone rotated down about 35 degrees and you're bending his shoulder in a way that would break the collarbone at the end in a human for that T-Pose?

    Hey Pierrick, Random question - Is there anything wrong with animation nodes? I didn't see you talk about them at all in your course. Are there limitations to them or is Dopesheet/Graph editor still the best tools to go?

    • @PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN
      @PierrickPicaut_P2DESIGN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Animation nodes are used to generate procedural animations, they’re mostly used for motion graphic. As far as I know, you can’t really use them for character animation
