Creating the RavenStag (a documented process)

- A year ago I started a project I had been dreaming of for years: creating a fae creature LARP costume that people would forget is a costume... Ambitious to say the least. Inspired heavily by Guillermo del Toro and his dark faerie creations, I set a standard for myself, and got to work.
It took six months of intense crafting, pushing my creative skills to hit the standard I set out for myself. There was also writing involved, since this creature was for a Live Action Role Play game and I wanted to make sure she added to the lore of the world too.
Revealing this creature was a meaningful experience on so many emotional levels, and I'm grateful for it. The RavenStag has helped tell some pretty incredible stories with the people they've met, and it means a great deal for this dream of mine has become part of other people's tales.
It's been a year, and there have been some upgrades since the last bits of footage shown in this video. If there is enough interest, I'll make a follow up, and consider answering some questions about it too.

I could not have completed this work without an immense collection of resources as a starting point. Here is a resource list for those who need it:
🎭Mask: One of a kind mask blank by the incredible anyaboz. www.anyabozartist.com/ (I used Thibra to create a scultp-able layer on top)
🦌EVA Foam Antler pattern: pretzlcosplay www.joycedesig...
🦅Feathers made using Rah-Bops tutorials: rah-bop.tumblr...
Cutting feathers into fur: • //Tutorial #68// Cutti...
🦞3d printed claws: www.thingivers...
Cheers, and thanks for watching!

On a final note, this costume, the RavenStag, is dedicated to a dear friend who believed in this dream from day one. Raise a glass to Mike - Alaric - who taught me the value of making dreams like these become real.

My favorite part is the Ravenstag just chillin' on the couch all mysterious like 😂
Seeing you put the mask with the full robe for the first time at 5:34 immediately pulled me back to watching you walk down the path late at night while I stood awestruck, holding your staff like an idiot.
Congratulations Margo, you're work is incredible and deserves all the praise it's received!

Absolutely stunning!!
I was totally thinking the Raven Stag from NBC's Hannibal, probly my favorite show of all time, but this is gorgeous! I also love del Toro's work, great job!!!
@@huntressmma1822 to be fair, the idea of a RavenStag was sparked originally from Hannibal, though admirably I've never seen the show. It seems like such a fascinating symbol in that story. Thanks for the love!
This is amazing. Thank you so much for taking us through your process, I am so inspired I'm considering to make my own mythical creature costume.
There is so little I can say about this other than freaking WOW!
IS THAT YOU?!? We've met during the Monster Pit Show! I was the pirate!
Wonderful!))
I love creature designs where they are mostly dark and fuzzy except for the face, which is often stark white, some examples being the skull crawlers from kong or the face stealer from ATLA. You captured that same spooky feeling here! I’m so glad this was recommended to me because you did a fantastic job!!
This is amazing! It's so cool to see the transformation process!
Heya! I'm the girl who asked for a list of bicolline's creatures / monsters a few days ago on Facebook and I somehow found my way to your documentary. I have to say, this is INSANELY good. The amount of details is phenomenal, the harmony of colours is absolutely enchanting and the overall result has such a mythical vibe to it, it's perfect, it really is. I had a first design ready to start the bases, but you inspired me to go beyond that and add an entire new layer of detail I didn't think about at first (no copying of course xD). Anyways, I really am in awe of your work and it is undoubtedly a clear milestone I will be looking forward to reach in the making of my own project. Thanks a lot :) (P.S.: sorry if I don't make much sense, English isn't my first language)
@@sa_reid merci!! I am so excited to see what you create and how it comes to life. I look forward to your creation and the RavenStag meeting someday!
so glad the algorithm led me here! the character design is so beautiful, the parts are married so well!!
Wow, you really put everything into this. Amazing work! So cool to see the process of it coming together.
I LOOOOOOOVE videos with no talking, just showing. Also the end result is chef's kiss, amazing work.
Thank you! I thought I would let the process speak for itself. :)
This looks like a character that would be in a folklore horror film that everyone assumes is bad but really isn't and has been left to grow up alone and has decorated themselves with things they have found
I'm glad you get this vibe. 🖤 I would love to this creatures story sometime.
So cool!! Love this
It looks so cool!
One of the best crafting video! Love the research behind it, the full process is amaizing and impressif. ❤
Very kind of you to say, thank you!
Awesome work Margo, this is amazing!
Que increíble 😮 😫
It was a blast meeting you, im glad i could keep you nice and cool with my hand fan during the one day :D
@@jellyfishvideo8901 you were a life saver with that fan!! Thank you!
@@MeMargoArt You're most welcome I was happy to help.
😍I would LOVE to do something like this, but have serious questions about how it works at the LARP:
- Did you need permission from the organizers to bring this character to the event?
- What was your game play like?
- How did you interact with the other participants?
- Was your character part of the storyline, a background NPC, or just something walking through the world?
- How did you handle other participants trying to get physical / blocking your path / being a nuisance?
Thank you for sharing your journey. It is a beautiful build and I look forward to going through all your other videos 😀
These are such a great questions!
Since Bicolline is more like a festival where a LARP happens, there is very little top down control on what players introduce. However, there is established lore and legends sorrounding the world, and so knowing that helps ground something like this. For example, I can't just claim the RavenStag is some sort of god. I based it's lore on existing fae lore that made sure to add to it consistently, and not seek any power other then what people assign to me through our interactions. Think, rule of cool, and if people believe you, they believe you, sort of thing.
The play is so absolutely fun, and a lot of that has to do with how people recieve the RavenStag. I don't speak words, but I do a lot of miming, which adds to the mystery and gives people the fun of trying to interpret what I might be communicating. I greet people with a sort of "fae handshake" which breaks the ice.
I developed a bit of a storyline through my character, which taught me a lot about making room for player interpretation and running with it! Maybe I'll make a video explaining the writing and development in a bit more detail. There was a lot of work that went into it that can't be described in photos. :)
Having a handler was so incredibly important. While I can technically manage on my own, it wouldn't realistically be safe. My handlers helps make sure I could take a break, manage crowds, and help introduce me to people, since I only speak in noises or gestures. I am grateful to my handlers for the work they do. The RavenStag can't walk without them.
Thank you for these questions! these would make for a great follow video. :)
very very cool!!!
amazing work! I saw you at bicolline and i was flabbergasted :0
This is amazing!
This is so inspiring lol I wish I was more experienced in costume making
We all start somewhere! Start small and enjoy the process 😊
You have about as many subscribers as I do! Great work!
So cool
So Orpheus, basically. :))))
Omg your costume is amazing, it's a crime that this video got so few views :'(
And you motivated me to also make a c r e a t u r e for my larp!
@@alligaythor6070 Go for it! ✨
what is that whiteboard app called?
I use Clip Studio Paint, which is an art app that has a built in recording feature. :)
