Wow, I need to try this stuff. I hate fighting with acrylic shades. This looks like a walk in the park in comparison.
Hi Kevin, happy to hear you liked the video! Yes, I am honestly baffled at why people keep using acrylic shades. Other than GW pushing them, I see no reason whatsoever not to move to products like this. My son (9 years old) uses them with no issues at all, so it ain't the learning curve.

Using oil washes on most of my models, the premixed consistence looks pretty good. I may have to check them out. Every step of the process already done beforehand leaves more time for painting other stuff.

I love scale 75 products anyway, the matte finish of the acrylics is fantastic. I’ll check out more of the soil works line though :)

Yeah, their acrylics are pretty much the only thing I use for brush painting. And yes, you need a liner brush! 😉

Your channel has quickly become one of my favorites and I don't even play 40k or the like! But I've started painting more 'grim dark' minis (started with plague marines) and am looking forward to trying 'bigger' stuff like this. I much prefer that 'lived in' look. 😆 I'm assuming there is no longer a Patreon as mentioned in older vids? Just the YT membership, correct?

Does it haft to be gloss varnish or would matt varnish work the same? Seriously want to try out oil washes for the first time. Great video!
Thanks! Gloss varnish makes the surface smooth, by closing the pores in the paint. Matt varnish protects the paint but does not help in any way with capillary action. Therefore, yes, gloss varnish it is.

There is another company who have been making pre-mixed oil washes for some time now, they're a Polish company caller 'Modellers World' their washes can be had for £3.95 for 30ml, not sure what that is in euros, probably similar to these scale 75 products, but the modellers world washes have a dropper built into the cap, and a steel mixing ball in the bottle too so they mix better when shaken

Hello, your video is really useful 😮 A question (I am not sure to understand). If I want to use this product on a figure painted with acrylic colours, is it MANDATORY to use varnish BEFORE using this wash product ? Thank you 😊
Thanks, Boar! Not mandatory, but the wash will flow better, and your paint will be protected in case you get a bit enthusiastic with the thinner in the cleaning up stage. I would try WITH first!

You are very welcome. I tried to explain the main differences in the video: they do not require any dilution, and being oils, they are more transparent and take longer to dry. The longer drying times can be very helpful in providing you with a wider window of opportunity for the cleaning up process. Since I discovered them, I have used them almost exclusively, even though I have 3 of these and dozens of enamels.

Great video, im really interested in trying this technique now! Love the use of powders as well, and how realistic they look, can I ask what's your preferred method to fix them in place? I'm using a matte varnish spray but I'm not entirely happy with the results I'm getting. Cheers and thank you!
Thanks a lot, Jason, and great to hear you enjoyed the video! I did the pigments off-camera, but basically it was two rounds of pigments fixed with AMMO Pigment Fixer (enamel-based), with around 6 hours in between applications. Highly recommend this method - you can see an example on my Snail Tank video.

Would you say that gloss varnish is absolutely necessary?
Hi Croatoam, I would say nothing in our hobby is “absolutely necessary”. It’s about getting best results and having the best experience…highly recommend a gloss varnish for both! Check out my blog for a much longer reply! theraceforterra.blogspot.com/
I know this is an older video, but do you happen to know what paint you used for that "ochre/yellow" of the main color on the tank? I have been trying to do something similar but I end up too tan or desert yellow. Thanks!
Hi, I’m not 100% sure, but I think it was Tamiya XF-88 without any highlights. Applied over German Dark Grey. Hope it helps!

Thx again; After applying the "Oil Wash" if you wanted to continue with Acrylic Painting, may you need to apply a Matt Varnish first? (i.e., will the paint adhere to the Gloss Varnish?)
Hi Southpaw, it's always best practice to apply a matt varnish first, yes.

Oil wash numpty question here. This looks amazing, but whenever I have tried this sort of thing it always goes wrong. I put a gloss varnish down over the paintjob, but when i try and take the wash off, the paint comes off too. Before that, i get no capillary action. This looks so easy, but I just can't get it to work - hence why I am still stuck in the world of agrax
Don’t know what to tell you - I never, ever had the paint come off. What do you use to take the wash off? Did you apply primer before a basecoat? For how long did the varnish dry? Would be happy to provide assistance during a Discord hangout or something
@@TheRaceForTerra hi, yes, that would be great. I'll watch out for the next one! I have honestly no idea what is going wrong, but I tried streaking grime over a Tamiya gloss spray and it didn't flow at all, just sat there. Also tried it over a basecoat->wash->highlights->gloss and the thinner took it straight down to sprue. I have a drawer of various enamels that I have tried once and given up on
@@johnwalliss what thinner are you using? Normally most white spirits have zero reaction to acrylics. Only if you clean up tool is too abrasivey it can take off paint.
@@johnwalliss Would love to help. My tips would be: 1) use a rattlecan primer and let cure for 24h; 2) let the basecoat dry for 3-4h before applying the gloss varnish; 3) let the gloss varnish also dry for 3-4 hours. If you do #1-3 I cannot see any reason why the paint would come off, unless you are using a huge amount of friction...and even then that should take quite a lot of elbow grease. If it's a resin kit, then the most likely culprit is the mold release agent.
