    So glad to finally see this officially being reviewed and released! Although I'm really disappointed that the "final" release has cardboard tokens rather than something of a higher caliber like Seaside, Prosperity, and Guilds. Those were excellent quality tokens. If this is in fact the last release, then they should have gone all out. Anything worth doing is worth doing all the way.

    Combine the Miser with some form of village and a card with a +buy, and you will clean up FAST. One of my favorite strategies. I’ve had a game or two where I draw my whole deck and bought 2 provinces every turn.

    It still gives an advantage because you draw those cards at the beginning of your turn i.e. you don't lose them to militia

    The artwork in this is ridiculous. This is one of the most popular games ever, they could have easily stepped up their component/artwork. Knowing they didn't have to and didn't says a lot.

      Sean Thompson or buffalo wings.
      Between my friend eating wings (sometimes licking fingers, sometimes not - not sure which was worse!) and my mother-in-law pausing to bend the card almost 90 degrees against the table while deciding whether to play it, it was well worth the extra $40 to sleeve my cards.

    Looks like I'll get this one and I am not a expansion completist. Im also a fan of Duration cards even though I sometimes fail to use them on there second turn and discard them by accident. Actual theme mechanics with the Leveling up characters and event cards, breath of fresh air for dominion.

    Finally released in germany, i bought adventures a couple of weeks ago and we played a bunch of games with it til now (2 player games only though), combined with kingdom cards from the other expansions. I agree with Tom that peasant & page are some of the most interesting concepts from the new expansion, although it depends (as always) on the other cards in the kingdom if you really want to go for that teacher / champion. Often enough there were faster strategies. Sometimes you stop at a certain traveller when it gives a bonus that no other card in the kingdom has. But I like the concept :-)

  • @ayahoo16

    so do the events stay in play after they are used? Can they be used over and over the whole game? At first I was thinking they were a one time thing but you never really explained either way. I guess I was thinking they were a one time thing because thats how they work in Star Realms. Either way it looks awesome I might just have to pick it up.

    • @eeHalcyon
      @eeHalcyon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Steven Loomis Events stay out the entire game. When you buy an event, you don't gain it like you would a regular card. Instead, you resolve its effect. Most of them can be used over and over the whole game, though some are restricted (e.g. Inheritance is only once per game) and some you probably only want to use once or twice.
      It's also worth noting that Events are not "cards". Tom talked about Swamp Hag, a Duration attack that makes you gain a Curse when you buy a card. But you can get around that attack by buying an Event instead!

    I doubt that buying a Port in one of the first two turns is a good decision. ;-)

    What is the printing quality like? There are rumours they've changed the cardstock so the cards don't match the existing sets.

    • @mjsmith1223
      @mjsmith1223 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Graham Charlton I was wondering the same thing. There seems to be some rumblings of inferior quality cards in this expansion. Is there any truth to that? I think I'll put the potential acquisition of this on the way back burner until we get some resolution. It's not like I don't have other games to play :-)

    I'm curious-- with all the cards in Dominion now, is each game still limited to 10 "Kingdom" cards? Seems like using the randomizer deck with all those cards could produce a set of 10 where there are no cheap cards at all-- all costing 5 or something. Or another where all the cards are cheap and there are no more powerful ones at all. And given how many there are, it would seem like making more available per-game could be interesting-- have people experimented with adding additional cards in a game? Also, one thing I've noticed with just the base Dominion is the games can go pretty fast, sometimes you barely get the chance to get a strategy going and the game's over- has anyone explored making the game longer by changing the end-game condition or adding extra Province cards or something?

    • @stuwillis
      @stuwillis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Syncopator When we play with Randomiser cards, we group them into low (2-3), medium (4-5), and high (6-7) cost. Then choose randomly from those. We'll often agree on reaction cards too. (i.e. let's have one reaction card, then we But the App randomisers often let you set that criteria, including card tracking so you never repeat a card. It's neat.
      Prosperity adds Colonys (worth 10VP, 11VP to buy) which we almost always play with as it will slow the game down.

    • @Syncopator
      @Syncopator 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stuart Willis Good ideas about grouping by cost, and now that I've looked more closely at Prosperity, I can see that the bigger coins and Colonys could lengthen the game a bit, though I presume if everyone just chose not to buy the Platinum or Colony cards, it'd be as usual If a longer game is desirable, I could see how changing the end condition so that simply emptying just the Province pile isn't enough. make it emptying just the Colony pile and/or 4 other piles or something...

    • @stuwillis
      @stuwillis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Syncopator Rushing is a genuine strategy in Dominion. But good opponents can slow you down while they build their engine.

    • @tj12711
      @tj12711 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree. 10 is perfect. If you can't figure out how to work around a kingdom of all 5 coin cards or all 2 coin cards, you're playing wrong. The whole point is going with what is available and building a strategy out of it. Also, Donald X has been pretty careful to make sure every expansion has a good mix of high and low costs, so on average you won't have that problem often anyway

  • @mcs4871

    since when is village a good first buy?

    • @forever915ful
      @forever915ful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MCS
      because you start a "engine" compared to smithy. for example if you use smithy (+3 cards) and you drew 3 actions, they ate useless since you can't use them. of course village is +1 card but if you drew the same 3 actions cards you use them
      the point is: a village is cheap engine card which work other actions to make stronger action phase

    • @mcs4871
      @mcs4871 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      forever915ful my point being that villages are essential to engine games, it is a very rare game where you should use your opening to pick up villages even in a vanilla flat draw engine such as smithy village, at the same price point almost any other card leads to a better opening

    seems like a decent expansion but i doubt i'll be getting it. the feel i got was too much variety with the cards as if they took 2 or 3 cards from each expansion and reflavoured them to fit into this one. also the text on the cards is a bit too extensive for me to enjoy. i might just print out the Event cards instead, they look pretty cool. but no coins though...disappointed.

    I agree with Tom about Prosperity, and I would even go so far as to say it’s the expansion I’d recommend first for new players because the cards are fun but also easy to understand.
    I disagree with him about Seaside. It’s a perfectly fine set but it has some duds like Pearl Diver, Sea Hag (which is completely useless once Curses run out), and Pirate Ship. Native Village (despite the possibly racist artwork) is awesome for its $2 price, and I really like Island and Outpost, but some of the Duration cards that Tom likes so much, like Caravan, are fun but ultimately not extremely powerful. Dark Ages, which was released before Adventures, would have to come before Seaside in my book.
    That said, I do really love Adventures (from playing online) and I hope to add it to my collection of cards soon!

    This sounds interesting, but it does seem like there's a lot of "weird" stuff that massively changes the game.

    tbh port is a terrible first/second turn buy. it gains and draws you nothing and you dont need the +actions aswell so early in the game. its almost never worth buying a village variant before having at least two terminal actions in your deck.
