I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.

@@kristopher850 Couldn't agree more. I have had instructors in the past who would get angry at you for making a mistake while LEARNING to fly. Do they sometimes forget the reason the student is learning is because they don't know how to fly perfect and that errors should be expected and corrected in a low stress learning environment. Credit to the instructor I am envious of Romeo Juliet Whiskey I wish I had that instructor.

Okay, I am a student pilot who is just starting to solo and I can't even tell you how much this video has encouraged me. I am seeing definite Improvement on my Landings, have had some really good ones, and I've had a few that I certainly wouldn't write home about. It is helpful to see other people botching the heck out of it and still walking away safely, and getting better all the time. Thank you so much!

Yeah Bruce is great. As long as its safe, having an instructor that allows you to make mistakes is the best way to learn.
A CFI has to let the student go as far as possible but he can still save it if needed.

Being a commercial A340 Pilot, I can tell that it’s incredibly important to not panic and stay calm in these situations and it’s amazing how the instructor didn’t let any of your mistakes discourage you. Great to see that the Flight Training Sessions have improved quite a lot!

In small aeroplane you have to have a steep descend like youre pointing the nose at the numbers on the runway. It felt very strange when I first had to do it - like you’re dropping like a brick is what it feels like

I'm a pro pilot and his landings don't look much worse than many of mine when conditions are poor (direct 30kt crosswinds, low level wind shear, variable winds) just keep rocking it and try to develop a feel for what that particular aircraft requires as far as correction is concerned. If not comfortable go around. If second guessing a bounce go around.

The requirements are listed in the Federal Aviation Regulations, which can be found on the FAA's website. Part 61 is a good place to start reading.
Wollongong doesn't have an ATC, We just state intentions. But we do have an ATIS and AWIS. As well as a computer system that replies with "Wollongong Traffic" after each transmission, However, if the transmission happens every 30 seconds let's say. A few beeps come your way meaning your starting to overuse the radio.

This instructor is a MASTER !! He lets the student experiences mistakes to learn from. It's a great instructor. Very confident. Trusting you, knowing his limits, yours and the limits of the plane and of the situation perfectly !
Any student with an instructor like this will learn so much in a small period of time in safety margins.

bonbondesel Even till this day now that im flyig with him he completely habded me controls on my first circuit lesson for a touch and go, feet off and all I look at him and he had his eyes shut like he wasnt there and it creeped me out lol. But either way he is really good with alot of things around the airport as well, He knows some of the pilots by name so he sits there and is all, Hey mike you can go around us and take off (Cause we were taking our time on run up) so kind, Patient yet safe to fly with I would not give him up for an instructor ever,

First off, kudos to you for actually posting your bad landings. It's rare to see them being posted by the actual pilot themselves.
Second, your instructor is absolutely fantastic. He's super relaxed about the whole situation, which does lots to boost confidence.

Change of instructor if it's still the same ! I'm not in aviation anymore, could not afford the price of licences, etc.. But I can tell you one thing. The first instructor I had was not letting me really learn. I changed and I got my first solo fly very quickly ! The new one trusted me and put me in the worst situations while being able to recover any time to push me to learn about my own mistakes. This was one of the best experience in my life that still brings me things in every day life. Stalls with high speeds and full throttle, deviating with the winds, pushing the rudder on the wrong direction in a crosswind landing, let me unlock my seat before takeoff just to tell me: "hey ! How do you fly the plane now that the controls are out of reach ? Remember: this is exactly how fatal accident happens !" Even let me not see a failure. Suction was lowering and I was surrounded by moutains with a lack of reference to the horizon and beginning to follow false indications... "Are you not in VFR conditions in moutain flying right now ? Did you notice something strange ?" And me: "Her, like it's painful to maitain errr..." He said "Ok, something wrong ? Don't loose time ! You feel it ! So analyse and action !" I saw this little light pop up and noticed the indicating heading was not right with the outside reference. Wow...

The aircraft i fly has 3 flap settings, TO, Land and Up, i put my hand near the switch (but not touching it) so i could lower flap as soon as i was within the speed limit and my instructor hit my hand away from the switch...
Ryan.. im not a pilot but it seems like a good lesson in preventing accidental flap changes.
Ryan and Flow, it seems to me that your instructor doesn't want you to lower the flaps until you have the runway assured because they add drag and reduce your glide distance (which wouldn't be great in the event of an engine failure) but you should ask him what are his reasons.

Hey thanks for posting this, I'm still early in my training (10hrs) and struggling a bit with center line defense on landings. Similar to your landings, each landing is a developmental step toward becoming a safe pilot. I appreciate the video, it's most helpful and encouraging.
I can't imagine being a trainer and leaving my life in the hands of new pilots. Kudos to them!

Yesterday I made, what looked like, the perfect flare, until I realised I was still about 3 feet from the ground when the plane slowed, stalled and dropped like a rock. Bit of a jolt, lol.

Student mistakes are an important part of the instructor building confidence in the student. Allowing the student of correct bad landings is a supreme learning experience. Without mistakes, the instructor never would know what the student would do in a tight situation. Excellent job, Mr. CFI !!!
In the words of my CFI, "Any landing you can walk away from, and the plane is reusable, is a good landing".
I did my 1st landing with no instructor input at 9.3 hours, but they were pretty bad until around 20 hours or so. Oddly, I loved crosswind landings, but was worse on non crosswind landings. Go figure.
Ultimately, quit flying around 60 hours after a number of crashes at the flight school and me getting cold feet. Did my two cross countries, and that was terrifying and awesome at the same time. After spending roughly a year around much better pilots than myself, and hearing of their accidents (including 2 fatalities), I decided I wasnt good enough or comfortable enough to continue past a Sport Pilot rating, and havnt flown in 5 years.
I will remember it as a huge accomplishment, having flown an airplane by myself, even though I later decided it wasnt for me. In the words of John Wayne, "Courage is being scared to death, and doing it anyway", and it literally took all the courage I could muster to push the throttle that first solo. Although, having the tower tell me to move my ass for incoming traffic probably helped a bit as well...
Hippie With A Cowboy Hat Thanks for your comment mate! I think just flying solo is an awesome accomplishment and something you will never forget. As I progress through my own training, now and 17 years ago, I've realised that learning to fly has been as much, if not more, about my mental journey as it just physically flying the plane.
I'm just over 20 hours into PPL training and I do much better with crosswind landings too lol
When I have a light steady crossind, let's say 5 or less, I find it easier too. It's like you have an invisible wall to brace yourself against.
I love how each mistake you apply what you learned from the last one up until the video of your last lesson which shows all of them working altogether. I want to be like you one day!
I just want to thank you for this unique video. Most of my landings in training were even worse than this, but I didn’t film them. I certainly didn’t put it out there for the world to see.

Was feeling discouraged to continue on with my instrument until I saw this video. I Definitely appreciate the transparency of your training, and I’m glad I found a video that I can relate to so well!
So reassuring. Almost crashed on my first. Came in to land, gust of wind came from 7 o’clock pushing the nose almost into the ground. Had to whack full throttle and go around, landed it pretty well the next time.
My first landing had a gust from the west come in at around 5 knotts and I was past the point of no return, left wing dropped as plane stalled right above the runway and rammed full power to climb out. Landed almost alright on the go around though

Thanks for sharing... everybody who has had the privilege to learn to fly has had plenty of bad landings. However, once you figure out how to manipulate the power and control inputs correctly on approach / landing, it is such an amazing feeling that you never forget.

In Spanish we say "Toma dura, toma segura" which means "tough landing, safe landing", every landing you can walk off is a good landinf

I remember my bad landing days.Im sure these type videos will be great for new pilots that are just starting out IN FLIGHT SCHOOL that are loosing confidence in flying because they cant land.Videos like these are great motivators. At the end of the lesson I felt like giving it all away but I'm glad I didn't. It all starts to click sooner or later. If your a student just realise that nearly every pilot goes through this transition. Landings for me now is what I look forward to the most.
Working on instrument rating now. But remeber my 1st et of landings like yesterday. i remember telling myself " theres no way i can land a plane " lol..

Same here. Don't know why, but the simple act of just paying attention to where the nose was pointing evaded me in my early hours.

Takes courage to post your mistakes. I applaud that. I'm currently a student pilot and I've had a few bad landings.... i don't think they were the same as yours, but mistakes were made and i learned from them. Now my landings have my Instructor gleeming with joy

The instructor not being a nut case is awesome. I remember the frustrated, screaming, borderline crackhead instructors I had to deal with when learning to drive.

yup! Everyone is like this. Some may not be as fast but you'll get there. Just listen to your instructor on what you are doing wrong and focus when you do it.

Very good instructor. My first was pretty hopeless and the C152 was as old as me. The dashboard used to vibrate so much you couldn't read the instruments. Then I got an ex fighter pilot as instructor. He taught me so well that everything he said is still applicable to everything in life. Do cockpit drills over and over with your eyes closed. You may not have the luxury of lights on instruments if a failure occurs. 40 years later I still remember them all.

I can so relate to this! Only 100hrs on my logbook and still have those vivid memories of my first attempts to land the thing... Unsure of how many times I wondered if I broke something! Experience helps but I reckon landing an aeroplane is still a hell-of-a-thrill.

Draviator as someone who fly an airplane with conventional landing gear I can't understand how you can fuck up the landing this way with the most easy landing gear type
Then go get a pilot's licence and uninstal FSX. And on the unlikely chance you've got one, go fly a 150/172 for a while. You'll fuck up. Eventually. Add lack of experience into it and these things are going to happen. RPL for 3 montns and bad landings happen. Hit downdrafts during a 10ish knot crosswind and bounced 20-30 feet into the air, didn't have time to flare or go around beforehand. Stop being a smartass and learn some maturity.
Just guessing here, but I guess you fucked up some landings too. The training is no different in that regard. Transitioning from TW to TC is a lot easier than from TC to TW.

Javier Llaneza definately a few eye opening moments for me there. tbh, the light support aircraft are much harder to land than your standard Cessna's and pipers.... these type of aircraft really make you a better pilot imho.
