First person Electric Scooter tour through one of San Francisco's poorest and most dangerous neighborhood's.
Be aware of your surroundings when passing through the Tenderloin District, this is one of San Francisco's most dangerous neighborhood's. First tagged with the name "Tenderloin" because of its similarity to a New York neighborhood that was regarded as a choice assignment for corrupt cops, San Francisco's Tenderloin is a forty-block section of downtown that is home to some 20,000+ people. It is San Francisco's most diverse and unusual neighborhood, and also one of its poorest.

    Union Square:
Union Square is a 2.6-acre public plaza bordered by Geary, Powell, Post and Stockton Streets in downtown San Francisco, California. "Union Square" also refers to the central shopping, hotel, and theater district that surrounds the plaza for several blocks.[citation needed] The area got its name because it was once used for Thomas Starr King rallies and support for the Union Army during the American Civil War, earning its designation as a California Historical Landmark. Today, this one-block plaza and surrounding area is one of the largest collections of department stores, upscale boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, and beauty salons in the United States, making Union Square a major tourist destination and a well-known gathering place in downtown San Francisco. Grand hotels and small inns, as well as repertory, off-Broadway, and single-act theaters also contribute to the area's dynamic, 24-hour character. The Dewey Monument is at the center of Union Square. It is a statue of Nike, the ancient Greek goddess of victory

For 12 blocks, between Broderick Street and Van Ness Avenue, it is an arterial road that is co-signed as U.S. Route 101. Lombard Street continues through the Russian Hill neighborhood and to the Telegraph Hill neighborhood. At Telegraph Hill it turns south, becoming Telegraph Hill Boulevard to Pioneer Park and Coit Tower. Lombard Street starts again at Winthrop Street and ends at The Embarcadero as a collector road.

San Francisco - what can you say? Back in the sixties when it was the wild hippie days it was still a safe, clean city that was wonderful to visit. Now I won't even go there to go to UC MED. One of the most beautiful but definitely never the most. I have noticed a tendency among people of SF to sneakily put SF along with NYC in conversations as if they are comparable cities when in reality they are not even in the same league. SF is such a small place with less than 1 million population. If you are talking urban beauty Chicago would top my list in USA although there is no other city like NYC.

I have not been back to San Francisco for 4 years after living there in the second have of th 1960s as a teen who moved there from Sacramento. I was a nerd but moved there after selling my profitable electronic repair shop. I graduated HS mid term so the same day packd up my 58 Chevy with my clothes, some test gear and $4000 from selling my 4 year old established hifi and amateur radio repair ship started at 13yo. To me San Francisco was the intenational port of culture, the arts, world communities and all things desirable. My yearly visits to spend the night in a hotel and shop for school clothes every August was the highlight of the year, because I got to visit real museums in Golden Gate Park or shop in China Town. I rented an apartment on a cliff overlooking Playland of the Pacific to the south and Cliff House to the west. It was expensive then due to the entire south facing wall was glass floor to ceiling with a view all the way to the the south. At the time housing was not too expensive but this 2 bedroom with great world class view was worth every cent. I parked the car and used my bike, walking or bus . I was not interest in the music scene that was raging at the time because I was a nerd but soon musicians found that there was this nerdy kid on the cliff who could repair their amps. They were simple circuits so easy to fix. There was a ham radio store up Balboa (the apartment address was 48th and Balboa but it required walking or driving up a narrow curving drive way to reach it. Directly below at the base of the cliff later would become The Family Dog Ballroom.. The radio store often had parts I needed so it was pretty easy to repair them, my customers, or trade for food or anything, were all on the verge of being signed and becoming household worlds, such as this tall skinny Mexican kid a year older, who had nothing to pay, I did not ask, but he wrote out a note and asked me to come hear him play at a place called Winterland. I happened to be in the area later so stopped by and showed the note to the door and went in to a large ballroom. That was the first time I heard of my new aquaintence, Carlos Santana, and found a new appreciation for the diversity of San Francisco music that was before WoodStock where he begged a late night spot that the promoters did not know or plan for any voluneer added bands so they gave their large band a well after minute play. The Bay Area knew the Santana band but at woodstock the whole world learned of their incredible talent. His gamle to drive a bus all the way to NY on the hope of begging a spot to play for free paid off with a major label recording contract. My new found interest in the music scene centered around the Grateful Dead. I started designing custom equipment for groups and later ended up in the recording industry owning a failed recording studio that I turned into one that was booked solid and recorded top groups for years. I still do not play any instruments but know what audiences would respond to and the technical aspects of recording.
I moved out of the US in 2000 beause it was clear to me that it was sinking, maybe not yet but had lost its way in many ways. I have only been back 5 times in 23 years and seeing the fracturing of society into 1000 factions were each hates the other 99 made it uncomfortable to even be in California and seeing the beautiful city by the bay become diry, smelly and in serious decline I avoided landing in SFO because my usual BART train, I was warned, has been taken over by homeless and gangs.
But this video shows a lot cleaner Tenderloin than I remember on my last 3 visits. Union Square had been taken over by the smell of urine and human feces covering the streets and thousands of homeless. Just to show a little support I booked 5 days in a hotel in Union Square to explore the city but I was refused entry because my prepaid booking was denied because all I had for ID was my US passport, expired Cal drivers license and my new-that-morning- temp renewal license. The manager said it was not legal to check in without US IF and passports do not count nor renewed temp drivers license. That must have been a niew law but I left to find another and was turned down, with the reason being only foreign citizens can use a passport for ID. That is something I noticed on each return trip, the number of nonsense restictive laws passed between visits seem to multiply. I gave up with hotels so tried hostels(the first place refused to refund my$800 prepaid because as the manager claims, I tried to check in by fraud.) I was turned down by a few Hostels but found one that was a fun place, very social and nice for $32 a night. The girl who checked me the passport was fine. I stayed a week and then asked to stay 4 more days. The same day the girl came to me say her manager who collects the money at 6 hostels, told her to kick me out because I had no legal id or what they demand now "Real ID". But she added, he will not be back for a week so I could stay 5 more days for free because she would tell him I was kicked out..
I have not returned since. I suppose people who are in the US who are seeing the changes in little steps that do not seem dramatic so they are less concerned but seeing 4-5 years of accumulated change at once in a return visit are likely as shocked as I am when I return, to experience the division, wokism/counter culture and infrastructure collapse all at once are probably as shocked as I was.

Seeing this is very depressing to me, because I remember the way SF was in the 1990's, and it really was wonderful to visit, have nice dinner on Saturday night, and take a leisurely stroll around Union Square before heading home at 1AM. One of the problems in San Francisco is that all the amenities and facilities to help the homeless and addicted are right in the Center of the city and are highly visible. Move them out of the Center.

Lots of boarded up storefronts and few people on the sidewalks. But most parking spaces are occupied, and with what looks like late-model cars. No clunkers. 🤔

I don’t like it at all .. either of those changes … don’t want to go back knowing what it, and she, has become
