  • ... That's Perfect for Vinyl Newbies and Couch Potatoes Alike
Dual fans will find this new disc-spinner eerily familiar, as it's closely based on that company's designs - and made in the same German factory that used to build the legendary CS-505. It's a fully automatic design that's perfect for those new to vinyl, or just people who can't be bothered with manual cueing. True, it's a bit of a comedown from the high end decks that Mike and David use, but they're still quite beguiled by its decent sound and excellent value for money.
Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs. Business executive Mike has a wealth of knowledge from previous hi-fi retail experience, and David has written about hi-fi for thirty years. Now Editor-in-Chief of StereoNET, he's picked up a few things along the way.
So relax and enjoy some one-take hi-fi riffing - and please leave your comments below. And don’t forget to hit the Subscribe button, this one goes up to eleven!
The eighties-tastic title tune is called ‘UFO/Mike’s Jumper’, and used with the express permission of our old pal and rights holder Simon Lythe.

Always fun to watch you two waffle on! I remember the high spindles that would let you add several singles, and then automatically drop the next one and start it again automatically. I'll be honest - I don't miss it :)

For a person getting into vinyl, who isn't into fiddling with belts to change speed and "fine tuning" the arm, this is fine and the fact it turns off at the end is a bonus as they they then need to to do is turn the record over drop the arm over and that's it.
Might just add for some of us with "wobbly paws" due to disabilities a bit of automation can help when it comes to enjoying playing records having had to make cueing aids personally to use my deck.

While not high end at all, my best friend's parents used to have a Sharp stack system which played both sides of an LP. The tonearm would go underneath the record at the end of side one to start playing side 2. It was pretty neat.

Hey fellas… nice to hear you referencing the 70’s music centres. I still have my dad’s Sharp music centre from 1978… doesn’t sound too good but I love the slider controls😂 Regarding this turntable… seems way overpriced to me, given that you can get better for a similar price… I’d buy a secondhand turntable if I was after my first one… plenty of bargains with the cost of living these days. K-Tel tho. I got a Top Of The Pops (or something like that album every Xmas in the 70’s but they weren’t the original artists and were pretty crap… they always had a half nude woman on the cover, which is probably why my dad bought it 😮😅😅😅🎶🎵

David, you have indeed had a turntable with you on the couch before - the Technics SL10 that biffed you on the nose and gave you amnesia...😵‍💫
My first turntable too was a Garrard SP25 mkIV - awful rumble and motor noise due to the ball race platter bearing and massive motor driving the platter via an idler wheel - soon upgraded to a Pioneer PL112D suspended subchassis belt drive.

The Rekkord F400 is a more "up-market" version of the F110 with what seems to be a better arm with adjustable tracking force and anti-skate, better standard of finish and comes with an Ortofon 2M Red. The F400 is of more interest to me as a second deck for use by other, clumsier, members of the household and also for testing and playing used vinyl which might not be in the best condition. I cannot find where to buy it in the UK - are you guys able to advise? Thanks and keep the videos coming chaps!

Very disappointed by the TR7. It has the wrong rear boot decals for a car of that year. Should be a single 'TriumphTR7' sticker on the driver's side rear.

Entertaining stuff, guys. Funnily enough, last night I was playing a Stax compilation with 10 tracks per side. It was a perfect last-record-of-the-night choice because it was probably cut about 6dB lower than anything I'd been spinning previously and therefore I didn't have to touch the volume control on my pre-amp! Many of those old Dual decks are still very well regarded and still in use today. I've always fancied one of their direct drive models: what is your take on those?

  • @MatthewBrannigan
    @MatthewBrannigan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I have a copy of that! Did you notice that the version of "The Prince" in "Night Moves" sounds a little different to the single and LP (One Step Beyond) version? It has a bit of a Spectory sound about it and the end goes on a few seconds longer with a lot of reverb.

Doesn't sound like my sort of turntable*, but huge credit to the irrepressible Heinz L for reviving a traditional Schwarzwald industry. The Dual brand seems to be in some sort of limbo. It would be nice if Heinz could grab it, in a sort of Husqvarna / Husaberg situation where KTM - also an Austrian company - brought two motorcycle companies with shared origins back together.

@@MrVinylista The G101/G102 were British-made, fully manual, priced just a little above the SP25 and MP60, and belt rather than idler drive. Enough to make them seem more "proper hi-fi" than the BSR and Garrard. Unfortunately eclipsed by the PL12D/SR222/KD1033. I gave mine to my dad when I bought an RP3. According to Noel K in the guttering days of Hi-Fi World, the F110P's standard-fit AT3600 (aka Rega Carbon) has magical properties, which set it far above anything close to its price. Which is about the same as two pints of beer in my local (not Royal Dutch...).

Is it upgradeable? Ie. can you bypass the internal phono stage, and is the counterweight adjustable so you can fit a better cartridge? The ability to do both those things would make it a much better proposition as a starter table. The At 3600 cartridge is a pretty poor choice, even at that price.

thinking about American audience is it as good as the Fluence 85n probably not maybe. I think it's got to be better than a Rega 1. what would you say it's Achilles heel is the arm?
needs a good isolation platform as well I would say or put it on a lump of foam and hard board not thick MDF.
A good isolation one of the best you can get if you want to make one pva glue some washing up sponges the thick ones not the cheap ones, glue the scarring side 4 in the corners one on each long side an inch and a half from the edge, and two in the middle 3.5 inches apart on some 8 mm hardboard. you could use a half inch bamboo
chopping board, but I would say is not as good.
if the table is heavy like a LP12 then put three in the middle the centre one going the short way, and two on the short side as well. let it dry for 24 hours before use or putting any weight on it

It's because of all the 'clockwork' cogs and sprockets used to work the cue-in and arm reject.
