Bloody hell!! All I meant was Richey wasn't a guitarist, he was however the most gifted writer of his generation. I adore the Manics, always will. From what I've learned, La Tristesse was the only studio recording he ever made and James himself said he gave up teaching him. No, I don't look don't on rhythm guitarists as I'm one myself and therefore know what I'm talking about.

Richey at the start makes me laugh. I remember seeing this on MTV2 about 11 years ago, I loved it. Amusing how they turned James down and Richey up :D Classic stuff.
At least Richey was honest about his limited abilities. Besides, he was plugged in most of the gigs the Manics played, and he was ok for the most part. He just stuck to barre chords, never tried to do anything too clever. And unlike most "real" guitar players, he looked wonderful.
Amazing! What was the ratio of sound between Richey and James? Not that it matters but it seems to be a big issue in the comments. Also, Richey himself felt less than when it came to his guitar skills. Would so love to know what you witnessed and felt.
Obviously Richey’s strength in the band wasn’t about playing ability, but writing lyrics, doing most of the interviews, writing press releases, etc etc. Just like Nicky who wasn’t a great player back then. The band used to call it “positive division of labour “, James and Sean did all the music but didn’t like publicity, So Richey and Nicky were the faces of the band. At this gig of course the sound guy fucked up royally, I’ve listened to Milton Keynes gig from same month and there wasn’t even a hint of Richey’s guitar in the mix.
Michael Graham Meh, it was passable but a bit heavy handed and messy. That wasn’t the issue here though, it was the sound of his guitar, virtually no low end whatsoever, very thin, and overly distorted/overdriven. Might have worked though if James’ guitar hadn’t been turned down so low!
haha how does he play fine? it's embarrassing, which is why he never played on any of the studio tracks (except maybe this one), still he's a brilliant lyricist, one of the best, so if you lose him you lose that.
I've recently read the biography by Simon Price and it does mention this gig. Apparently the band watched this back and heard that the sound man fucked up and Richey was mortified x x
James James true, he improved a lot around 1994, on the last tour he did his guitar was always quite high in the mix and he was even playing more than just bar chords (4st 7lbs verses for example)

Richeys guitar sound is awful, much too high and drowning out the most important part of this track; James' hookline. It's not his fault, it's the sound engineer to blame. He isn't to blame though for the horrifically mis-timed intro to the lead break where all of them seemed to go west for some reason (pissed?) Richey DID actually play the rhythm on the studio recording on this track and also on No surface all Feeling from the Everything Must Go Album. It was recorded before he disappeared, and he was actually improving while he was in the Priory as James lived in London and was visiting him and teaching him. It was the first time Richey had nothing else to do but play guitar
I've heard worse. A bit too much treble and James's guitar is mixed way too low, but perfectly serviceable for a punk rock guitarist. I don't think Richey was trying to be Slash or Jimmy Page but he seemed to be having a good time with it at least.

Except Sid couldn't write a song or contribute anything besides shooting heroin and vomiting all over the stage. He was a latecomer to the Sex Pistols that they brought in as a ringer just because Johnny Rotten had an ego problem and couldn't stand Glen Matlock. Richey was a major part of the Manics' songwriting, philosophical approach and aesthetic even if he didn't contribute very much sonically. They were still pilfering lyrics from his notebooks even years after his disappearance, which shows how much they valued him.

Melissa Wright that was about Glasto 94, Richey was quite up in the mix as well and was mortified when saw BBC footage
