Absolutely! The band has a loose-sloppy feel (not a complaint), and his bass playing is the glue. It is really the musical base of the band - the guitar is scratchy, the lead vocal scratchy, the background vocals scratchy, the bass is clear and carries the harmony to the vocal line. It is like he plays slightly behind the beat, which gives the whole band a rollicking bar-band feel.

I saw them in Chicago in 1971 at the release of Rod's Every Picture Tells a Story. They did Maggie May before it was released; the audience went insane over it. The whole concert was beyond incredible. It still rings through my mind. I'm grateful to have been a part of it.
Saw them in 1969-70 at Pirates World in Dania, Florida. Really went to see Savoy Brown, but Faces went on first and no one wanted them to get off stage for Savoy Brown so they partied and played for 2 hours great show always remember.

I know this is old, but I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl also. I remember the bar. I also remember Rod kicking soccer balls into the audience. I was front row because a friend of mine was in charge of the security and we could take any seats we wanted if they were empty. They called themselves "Peace Power". All bikers.
I saw them with Humble Pie. They were incredible. Rods finest hour, what a incredible showman. Between them and the Pie, I don't think many or were still the whole show. I would have loved to seen Rod & Ronnie when they played for Beck.

My granny is 84 this year. She always said Rod Stewart has the best voice. She said she has never thought of him as good looking. ( yea right lol ) She just adores his voice. She loves this man. She loves whatever he does. He makes her shine. She sings along. Its beautiful,man. I personally cherish his stuff with the Faces. Just .. mmm.. wowza! The entire band was far-out! I could not believe how much he spoke about how many drug they did. What tore this band apart was Rod Stewart. Ronnie Lane R.I.P never got to sing the songs he wrote and felt stiffed and was very unhappy. Rod recorded the best songs on his own albums. The rest is history.
kat Mats I agree with what you say about Ronnie Lane, I think they could have functioned perfectly as a four-piece with Plonk on lead vocals. It may have meant a reduction in showmanship without a standalone vocalist, but I don't think the music would have suffered.
Bobby G It would have been interesting if they would have stuck together and saw what came out of it. The Stones were eyeballing Wood at the time. Affectionately as you said Ronnie was called Plonk from The Small Faces days. Poor Ronnie and Steve Marriott with all the unpaid royalties lives would have been a better one . Seems Mac and Kenny did alright. To this day they are still going after what is owed somewhere around L10 Million and L15 Million. As far as Rod~~~~ I own Gasoline Alley and that is it. Never been a big fan of him once he left Faces. I have read although that he helped out Plonk with his medical bills along with Pete Townsend. Pete helped a great many brothers in a pinch. An unsaid hero. Good to have a conversation with ya.
I absolutely Adored the Small Faces - when Steve Marriott left I was devastated! When Rod Stewart came along to join the best rhythm section of the times, Ronnie, Kenny, and Mac he must have thought all his Christmasses came at once! I saw Rod and the Faces with Ron Wood live twice in 1972/73. Once at the Hollywood Bowl, then again at the Caird Hall, Dundee. Ronnie Lane was the beautiful soul who was the basis of both amazing bands.
Now it's 65 as I watch again Harold....... ???? Who could not LOVE this classic low-down dirty raw rock n' roll, by fantastic musicians? I shake my head!!

Saw The Faces at their last US show ever, November 1, 1975 in Minneapolis...I also believe that was the last concert that they ever played as a group....Yes, I know that Tetsu had replace Ronnie for the last tour, so it wasn't technically The Faces. They knew it was their last concert, (they hinted at it several times) and tore the house down! I still count it as one of the greatest concerts that I've ever seen. At the end, Rod Stewart broke the mike stand over his knee and said "it's over". What I remember the most is the energy they all put into the concert...There was a lot of press about Rod taking over the band, but you couldn't see any animosity on stage. Just pure joy of a band who put everything into their last concert together. The funny thing is I didn't want to go to the concert. It was advertised as "Rod Stewart and Faces"...I knew of Rod Stewart but had never heard of Faces. A friend talked me into going with him. To this day we talk about that concert. An incredible band and experience.
I am forever grateful to my H.S. girlfriend who turned me on to Faces back in the day. Forty six years later any Faces tune will light up my day and I think of her. Thanks Pam, where ever you are. Great f'in music.
robert glenn the younger generation thinks that our generation were made up of cavemen and cavewomen. They don't understand that we accomplished plenty without a computer, but we had to use snail mail and actually meet face to face. The world couldn't be global and that's an advantage of today, but the world was more local community oriented and people were connected in real face to face interaction, and that's today's loss because the more we connect on line, the less we connect in person it seems.

Today, virtually all of my interpersonal connections are online, this due in part to retirement, dealing with post-polio and lack of resources to travel as I would otherwise wish. Even my two brothers, whenever contacting me, do so online. And one lives less than two miles. When my mother was in the late stages of passing, I was informed so online and same with her death, it came via email, a phone call coming only later. However, I've made some wonderful friends across the US as well as England, Spain, Sweden and Brazil, something that would have been impossible when I was living my state of the art old school days. It's rather sad that I haven't a clue who my neighbor is but have daily chats with a buddy in Spain! The kid upstairs devotes nearly 15 hours per day online. He leaves only to run necessary errands. What a shame. He is all of 24 and should be out and about discovering his world.

I know some 20 and 30 year old who "discovered" Led Zep this way. Unfortunately, they generally stop digging once they know a few big names, and can establish themselves as the one eyed king in the midst of their deaf dumb and blind colleagues of the same age. The internet allowed me to do from where I live (Antwerp Belgium) research in complete collections of 1950's music magazines on singer Sunny Gale etc. So, the cyber age certainly has a lot of cons, especially for those who knew the period before the TRS 80 & co., but it certainly also has a lot of advantages. People from different parts of the world communicating about their favorite music (even if you have to sift through a lot of mud) or disagreeing about it, sending each other links etc. But I agree, traveling each day in the commuter train from Antwerp to Brussels, it is really freaky: everyone bend over a blue screen or having headphones on etc. I'm not sure if it was very different in the 1970's: many commuters then were hiding behind their newspaper... It's rather a cultural thing: Flemish people (northern part of Belgium) is less talkative than the Walloons, who are living in the South. Much friendlier, more polite, even children, but of course let's not generalize. But having to hear about your mother's passing away through the computer... Frankly, that's "not done", that's in a chilling way rude and impolite... But that's the new mentality.... Look at some people dining together... with the mobile phone within reach.... And they're certainly not all doctors :)

I just now recall the myriad images I have of New York commuters riding the train into Manhattan, each of them shrouded from one another behind the New York Times, not one distinguishable face as all are hidden behind the headlines. Today, it's the same thing only high tech. The worst thing that ever happened to my family was the day dad brought home a TV stand with rollers. That night, he rolled it from the living room into the kitchen and dinner time was never the same.

Had to watch this again. Early 70s concerts were the best. I saw Badfinger, Faces, Grand Funk and King Crimson in 72 before I was 14. After I turned 16 in 74 I saw a concert twice a month when I could afford it. The 70s was live music at its best.
For me, still one of the big "if"s of rock history. If they had made it to our time without the split, they would have been definitely one of the immortals like the Stones. If...

I saw them... a long time ago... can’t remember which album but Rod was rocking a pink satin suit, they were definitely feeling very jolly, and were brilliant... a couple of songs ended differently than when they started, but the crowd ate it up. Certainly a one of a kind band...
I'm not a musician but it sounds to me like everything is turned up so loud its creating a fuzzy sound like his amp speakers may burst at any moment (in a good way).
@@neilwhitaker6284 combination of amps, the pre amp gain just overdriving a bit, and his picking technique, and Ronnie used a pick which really gave a lot of attack to the sound, most bass players used their fingers which gave a softer fuller sound ... Personally I think he had one of the greatest bass sounds ever, that swampy, falling down the stairs kind fo thing, fitted the Faces perfectly
Their cover of "(I Know) I'm Losing You" is particularly outstanding. Kenney Jones' groove throughout the song and drum solo prove that he is a wicked underrated drummer.
I grew up with 80's rod stewart.had no idea he rocked like this til I was waaaay older.i am soooo glad I got a heads up from a buddy who said "man,rod used to rock hard back in the day!".to me tho,ronnie lane is the absolute highlight of the faces.one of the best bassists of all time in my book and a helluva songwriter,too!
Ronnie Wood is great when he isn't in the mix with Keef R. Of course, The Stones ARE Keef and Ronnie, but its really nice to hear his tone and talent properly. and Ronnie Lane is the most underrated fella ever. Poor sod was broke most of his life. Then very ill. God rest his soul.
Yes, very sad. I am so glad that there are better treatments for MS these days. My sister has that and she's thankfully doing rather well. Not as mobile as she used to be, but hanging in there. I'm a child of the 70s and miss groups like this, Humble Pie, etc.

I can remember iwe all had the Rod Stewart Ronnie Wood Rooster hairstyles in the 2000's and ran like a gang of artful dodgers misbehaving, breaking hearts and getting hearts broken. The Faces were a breath of fresh air from the hippie stoner music of the period, they had STYLE. Style that still looks current today, and the music still holds up too. To me this is the pinnacle of anything that Rod and Ronnie did subsequently
Dragon13Loco Yes, this is the best of the best re Rod Stewart; I have a theory that he was advised to tone down his highly expressive side in the 80's but the truth is his absolute best performing came when he felt totally free to express in his way, which included a bit of connection to the softer, feminine side; I"m saying this was really, really good, and I would have loved to see where The Faces, with Rod Stewart, could have evolved to had they stayed together! I think Rod Stewart looks more happy in these performances than in some others even though they were still stellar. The best advice I would have given him, if I were his manager, would have been; don't reign in that expressive side because people are drawn in by that kind of authenticity. Know who you are, be who you are and don't change that if someone thinks it's wrong, because often time tells that you were right and they were wrong.

I could not believe how much he spoke about how many drug they did. What tore this band apart was Rod Stewart. Ronnie Lane R.I.P never got to sing the songs he wrote and felt stiffed and was very unhappy. Rod recorded the best songs on his own albums. The rest is history.
kat Mats I agree with what you say about Ronnie Lane, I think they could have functioned perfectly as a four-piece with Plonk on lead vocals. It may have meant a reduction in showmanship without a standalone vocalist, but I don't think the music would have suffered.
Bobby G It would have been interesting if they would have stuck together and saw what came out of it. The Stones were eyeballing Wood at the time. Affectionately as you said Ronnie was called Plonk from The Small Faces days. Poor Ronnie and Steve Marriott with all the unpaid royalties lives would have been a better one . Seems Mac and Kenny did alright. To this day they are still going after what is owed somewhere around L10 Million and L15 Million. As far as Rod~~~~ I own Gasoline Alley and that is it. Never been a big fan of him once he left Faces.
I have read although that he helped out Plonk with his medical bills along with Pete Townsend. Pete helped a great many brothers in a pinch. An unsaid hero. Good to have a conversation with ya.

I absolutely Adored the Small Faces - when Steve Marriott left I was devastated! When Rod Stewart came along to join the best rhythm section of the times, Ronnie, Kenny, and Mac he must have thought all his Christmasses came at once! I saw Rod and the Faces with Ron Wood live twice in 1972/73. Once at the Hollywood Bowl, then again at the Caird Hall, Dundee. Ronnie Lane was the beautiful soul who was the basis of both amazing bands.

Saw The Faces at their last US show ever, November 1, 1975 in Minneapolis...I also believe that was the last concert that they ever played as a group....Yes, I know that Tetsu had replace Ronnie for the last tour, so it wasn't technically The Faces. They knew it was their last concert, (they hinted at it several times) and tore the house down! I still count it as one of the greatest concerts that I've ever seen. At the end, Rod Stewart broke the mike stand over his knee and said "it's over". What I remember the most is the energy they all put into the concert...There was a lot of press about Rod taking over the band, but you couldn't see any animosity on stage. Just pure joy of a band who put everything into their last concert together.
The funny thing is I didn't want to go to the concert. It was advertised as "Rod Stewart and Faces"...I knew of Rod Stewart but had never heard of Faces. A friend talked me into going with him. To this day we talk about that concert. An incredible band and experience.

I am forever grateful to my H.S. girlfriend who turned me on to Faces back in the day. Forty six years later any Faces tune will light up my day and I think of her. Thanks Pam, where ever you are. Great f'in music.

Hey, look what we used to do without computers!
robert glenn the younger generation thinks that our generation were made up of cavemen and cavewomen. They don't understand that we accomplished plenty without a computer, but we had to use snail mail and actually meet face to face. The world couldn't be global and that's an advantage of today, but the world was more local community oriented and people were connected in real face to face interaction, and that's today's loss because the more we connect on line, the less we connect in person it seems.
Well put, carfreelori. Today, virtually all of my interpersonal connections are online, this due in part to retirement, dealing with post-polio and lack of resources to travel as I would otherwise wish. Even my two brothers, whenever contacting me, do so online. And one lives less than two miles. When my mother was in the late stages of passing, I was informed so online and same with her death, it came via email, a phone call coming only later. However, I've made some wonderful friends across the US as well as England, Spain, Sweden and Brazil, something that would have been impossible when I was living my state of the art old school days. It's rather sad that I haven't a clue who my neighbor is but have daily chats with a buddy in Spain! The kid upstairs devotes nearly 15 hours per day online. He leaves only to run necessary errands. What a shame. He is all of 24 and should be out and about discovering his world.

+robert glenn OK, certainly agreed, but look what a weath of fantastic music and movies is hidden in online chambers, only to be discovered by those with a curious mind... I know some 20 and 30 year old who "discovered" Led Zep this way. Unfortunately, they generally stop digging once they know a few big names, and can establish themselves as the one eyed king in the midst of their deaf dumb and blind colleagues of the same age. The internet allowed me to do from where I live (Antwerp Belgium) research in complete collections of 1950's music magazines on singer Sunny Gale etc. So, the cyber age certainly has a lot of cons, especially for those who knew the period before the TRS 80 & co., but it certainly also has a lot of advantages. People from different parts of the world communicating about their favorite music (even if you have to sift through a lot of mud) or disagreeing about it, sending each other links etc. But I agree, traveling each day in the commuter train from Antwerp to Brussels, it is really freaky: everyone bend over a blue screen or having headphones on etc. I'm not sure if it was very different in the 1970's: many commuters then were hiding behind their newspaper... It's rather a cultural thing: Flemish people (northern part of Belgium) is less talkative than the Walloons, who are living in the South. Much friendlier, more polite, even children, but of course let's not generalize. But having to hear about your mother's passing away through the computer... Frankly, that's "not done", that's in a chilling way rude and impolite... But that's the new mentality.... Look at some people dining together... with the mobile phone within reach.... And they're certainly not all doctors :)
Benoit Vanhees Excellent post. A wonderful read it is. You mentioned how technology separates humans from one another in any given age. I just now recall the myriad images I have of New York commuters riding the train into Manhattan, each of them shrouded from one another behind the New York Times, not one distinguishable face as all are hidden behind the headlines. Today, it's the same thing only high tech. The worst thing that ever happened to my family was the day dad brought home a TV stand with rollers. That night, he rolled it from the living room into the kitchen and dinner time was never the same.
Be glad both The Stones & The Faces existed....neither better, both brilliant. Silly to compare greatness....just appreciate.

Early 70s concerts were the best. I saw Badfinger, Faces, Grand Funk and King Crimson in 72 before I was 14. After I turned 16 in 74 I saw a concert twice a month when I could afford it. The 70s was live music at its best.
For me, still one of the big "if"s of rock history. If they had made it to our time without the split, they would have been definitely one of the immortals like the Stones. If...

I saw them... a long time ago... can’t remember which album but Rod was rocking a pink satin suit, they were definitely feeling very jolly, and were brilliant... a couple of songs ended differently than when they started, but the crowd ate it up. Certainly a one of a kind band...
I'm not a musician but it sounds to me like everything is turned up so loud its creating a fuzzy sound like his amp speakers may burst at any moment (in a good way).
@@neilwhitaker6284 combination of amps, the pre amp gain just overdriving a bit, and his picking technique, and Ronnie used a pick which really gave a lot of attack to the sound, most bass players used their fingers which gave a softer fuller sound ... Personally I think he had one of the greatest bass sounds ever, that swampy, falling down the stairs kind fo thing, fitted the Faces perfectly
Agreed on Ronnie's sound here. He's up nice and greasy in the mix and clearly having a blast.
Their cover of "(I Know) I'm Losing You" is particularly outstanding. Kenney Jones' groove throughout the song and drum solo prove that he is a wicked underrated drummer.

I grew up with 80's rod stewart.had no idea he rocked like this til I was waaaay older.i am soooo glad I got a heads up from a buddy who said "man,rod used to rock hard back in the day!".to me tho,ronnie lane is the absolute highlight of the faces.one of the best bassists of all time in my book and a helluva songwriter,too!

Yes, very sad. I am so glad that there are better treatments for MS these days. My sister has that and she's thankfully doing rather well. Not as mobile as she used to be, but hanging in there. I'm a child of the 70s and miss groups like this, Humble Pie, etc.

I can remember iwe all had the Rod Stewart Ronnie Wood Rooster hairstyles in the 2000's and ran like a gang of artful dodgers misbehaving, breaking hearts and getting hearts broken. The Faces were a breath of fresh air from the hippie stoner music of the period, they had STYLE. Style that still looks current today, and the music still holds up too. To me this is the pinnacle of anything that Rod and Ronnie did subsequently

Dragon13Loco Yes, this is the best of the best re Rod Stewart; I have a theory that he was advised to tone down his highly expressive side in the 80's but the truth is his absolute best performing came when he felt totally free to express in his way, which included a bit of connection to the softer, feminine side; I"m saying this was really, really good, and I would have loved to see where The Faces, with Rod Stewart, could have evolved to had they stayed together! I think Rod Stewart looks more happy in these performances than in some others even though they were still stellar. The best advice I would have given him, if I were his manager, would have been; don't reign in that expressive side because people are drawn in by that kind of authenticity. Know who you are, be who you are and don't change that if someone thinks it's wrong, because often time tells that you were right and they were wrong.
Thank you God! This is Rock and Roll, the way it was meant to be.

One of the ALL TIME BEST BANDS to ever play together ,write their own music & preform live EVER!!!!!! saw them live in Detroit every gig they did here, and there fairwell concert in 75' was unreal!!!
I heard they used to play some wild shows there.they loved detroit from what I gather.
I was 9 years old in 1972. I started learning the Bass way back then. I'm about to turn 57 and I miss Ronnie something awful. We need to teach today's generation this type of old school rock or it will be lost to time..
