The 01200s have Officially Been Retired Forever…

  • Hey Guys today is rather unfortunate because earlier today my friend discovered that the remaining 48 Hawker Siddeley 01200s that are held at the yards have been retired and are now awaiting scrap. While this news may seem bad that shouldn’t distract us from celebrating the legacy of the Hawkers. They carried millions down the line for 42 years. I hope all of you can share your stories down in the comments below! I would love to hear how the Hawkers are special to you! The footage in this archive is from August 19th 2022.

Can’t believe the 01200s are retired and it’s hard to think they were on an elevated train line 40 years ago, just blows my mind big time. Farewell hawkers 1980-2022. When I first started riding the T back in ‘09, I used to take the orange line to tufts and have my checkups and yearly doctor visits at the floating hospital for children and I can tell you, the sound of the 12s when they were rumbling down the tracks to the station is something I will never forget. The brake “hiss” sound whenever the 1200s would pull off is something I also remember and miss. The wood paneling inside and cushioned cloth seats were also great features of the hawkers. 42 years of hard work, carrying passengers and making daily trips on the line between oak grove and forest hills. I’m very surprised the cars lasted as long as they did, that’s thanks to the hard work of the employees at wellington that were forced to maintain and run the already 30-year-old trains for another decade. Even though they are now almost scrap metal and rubble, they will always hold a special place in my heart and I’ll always remember them for being the most unique cars in all of MBTA’s history.😊 The 1200s will never be forgotten and they will be surely missed by everyone.

The final time I saw the 1200s was when I performed at Back Bay Station on a Saturday in July. It was also my final ride on one.
I'm gonna miss these things a lot. I've got a lot of memories riding them to and from my destinations. They were truly fun to ride and the distinct noises that came from them, made them incredibly unique.

Oh man... The Hawkers were an experience and earned a deep place in my heart. Some of the best memories I ever had took place on those trains. Their SOUNDS by far are unique, they can surely put on a performance. Every car had it's own character. While this is unsurprising news and they surely are well past their performance life it is sad to officially see them go. I will forever cherish my memories with them. 🧡

I remember the first every train I rode was a 1200 and I was so excited and happy to be on that train. Every since they have been some of my favorite trains in the MBTA. When I saw this video so meny thoughts were going through my head. I had so meny memories on these trains.

I'll admit, I've only ever been on the Hawkers once in my life. But it breaks my heart that I won't be able to see them anymore. What's REALLY gonna hurt for me is seeing the Green Line Type 7s and 8s get retired. The Type 7s in particular hold a very special place in my heart, as I rode on them to my first ever Red Sox game.

Ironically, I got notification of your video as soon as I boarded my current fav subway car during my commute home that I didn’t accept in my childhood where I started to think I will endure your same pain when they’re expected to be retired between 2025-2030. Made me think I have to cherish every moment I can.
If I recall stating before, they could’ve at least have a proper sendoff. Instead we got these “right minds” who can’t think to compensate and dealing with slow zones that I endured in my last visit. It’s best to carry on the Orange Line spirit, but for sure won’t be the same way like you and others have grown used to. If you know how much longer how long they’ll be at the Wellington barn, I will wanna rush over there in my work gear cuz my plan for my next visit involves experimenting to see what reactions I get.
I happen to work at a place called Trainworld…

Not gonna lie, even being a New Yorker who didn’t know that much about the 01200 Series, being alive and aware of their existence within my existence is enough of an honor, and being able to watch freshly uploaded videos and learn things about them while they were still working hard on the orange line still means something, and I think that goes for a lot of other people. My deepest sympathies to those who lost a really close train to them so out of the blue, I can tell those things were cool to ride, and pretty special to see.

I have written the Orange Line for a long time. Since we don't own a car yet. The Hawker Siddeley 1200s would rattle and rattle on the tracks. I would arrive at Downtown Crossing with my mom and ride them. I actually loved the wood paneling interior and the outer iorn lovely shape and design. I wonder what those bumper looking things on the Orange paint are called. Anyways we ride them from Downtown to Chinatown or from Downtown to Sullivan or to Roxbury Crossing. Rattling across the line. From the nice view from Sullivan to Assembly. The last time I'd seen the 1200s parked at Wellington on March 16, 2023. Even though I found out its last passenger ride on August 19, 2022. I did still realize that they were still at Wellington and Forest Hills. Now the news of being Scrapped. So much memories. Now I don't know what to say. I wished they did make a last revenue service. I have one question can you like talk to th staff about the 1200s maybe one last revenue? The 1200s at Wellington. Are still in perfect working condition. No damages, rust. Or any scars. The interior from the overpass view looks fine and neat. Next to the 1200s are damaged 1400 and 1401. Most of the 1400s are inside the warehouse. The T only has 79 1400s. If the public complains about limited trains. Then the T might be forced to run the 1200s until the 1500s are delivered
    RIP (1980-2023).
    Hawker Siddeley 1200's
You were my favorite and loved
Even though you will be Scrapped in pieces of metal and Cords.
You do still exist in my heart and memory.

Hi Nick! Really going to miss those trains. The sounds and texture of them will be sorely missed. I’m sure the new management is under a lot of pressure to make things happen, so I’m partially not surprised. We’ll just have to adapt and be thankful that we can still enjoy the sights and sounds of the route. Thanks for all of your work on these videos!

Well this is the end of a era well i wish the seashore trolley museum was able to get a pair but sadly they didn’t get any it would’ve been cool to see the 1200s near its 0600s sibling. Well Rest in peace 1200s, 1979-2023
Well the Mbta has to really fix the 1400s and add some 1200s feeling into it and i will like the 1400s alot more.

I go to Boston on Saturday's, and I went across the skywalk at Wellington, which passes right over the orange line train yard and I got some good photos of the last of them. They have a bunch left, and as of a few days ago, they are still sitting there. I've talked with a few engineers at the stops, because they slide the window across to check the platform and some of them miss them too. I've ridden on the new ones, they are cool, but it isn't the same. I keep expecting them to pull in, but they don't use any of them anymore. One of the engineers told me they ruin the rails. RIP H.S.

Reminds me of when I was kid back in the early 90’s when my dad used to take us into town. We’d park at Sullivan station. He would say hi to his T buddies, take me to get my haircut. We’d end up going to Tropical Market afterwards. Seeing these 01200’s brings nostalgia. I remember the seats being black, and the chime was a little different in that it didn’t sound weathered. I’m going to miss these cars.

Farewell to the 12's and the neoplans. you guys serve Boston's transportation system very well. when I was young, I always love them they are my childhood trains and buses. I wish I could have a rolling sign and keep it to remember how much I love those things. Those darn 1400's and xcelsior's can take away their service life, but never took away their legacy and history with them. I wish if they discontinued the 1400's contract, and make a new one contract to Kawasaki, and bring back the 1200's then they would be in service when the Kawasaki built trains are delivered with the same design except for the hump to be a little higher and doesn't plagued with mechanical issues, then it would be the right time to retire them. but right now, I'm side to see those I away

It's sad that this now leaves the type 7s as the last MBTA subway train that feels like a nice place to be. All the modern stuff is cold and hostile, the warmth of wood panelling and comfy seats are a tragic loss. I can't believe the seashore trolley museum failed to acquire one of these.
