      @@Thom-TRA I have to say as someone who took GO to Niagara Falls during the week last week.. the Ontario gov should be ashamed of the schedule they have in place right now.. there were two trains about an hour apart in the morning.. not bad.. but coming back you basically only have a train that leaves after 9pm.. or you can take a VIA train for double the cost.. and as I learned that VIA train is really an AmTrak train that needs to put everyone through customs before anyone at Niagara Falls can get on.. my train last week took 90+ minutes longer than scheduled at least partly because of that.. and it's supposed to be like a 2 hour train ride.

    The thing I like about GO Transit is that with the trains you are notified if there's any delays. The communication is smooth and flawless - which is how I like it. GO Transit is probably one of the best-run transit agencies in North America, with impressively good reliability and decent customer service. They do have a couple annoying policies such as closing the doors 60 s before departure (even though it only takes 20 s to close the doors).
    The Lakeshore East and West lines currently have the odd situation where the weekend off-peak service is more frequent than the weekday off-peak service (every 15 min on weekends but only every 30 min on weekdays). There are also express trains, but only a handful per day (11 round trips on weekdays, and 3 on weekends). GO doesn't seem to realise how much more competitive the express trains/buses are than their local counterparts.

    Great to see you cover Toronto GO Transit, which brings back memories of a half-year stay and several subsequent visits to friends in this great city. Toronto's commuter train system is indeed very efficient and convenient. What surprised me a bit is how relatively underpowered those trains are with only one diesel engine hauling up to 12 bi-level coaches, weighing more than 700 metric tons. A Siemens Desiro HC or similar system could accelerate future commuter services significantly.

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      GO Transit uses the most powerful diesel passenger locomotives in North America, with 5400 hp compared to the 4000 hp that most other passenger locomotives have.
      The issue is traction rather than power. Even the 5400hp locomotives accelerate far slower than an EMU since they only have 4 powered axles.
      The province of Ontario is electrifying the central part of the rail network so local trains can be electric and accelerate much more quickly

    Never been to Toronto but have heard cool things about GO Transit as a rail fan. They also operate feeder buses and these are either double deckers or full on commuter buses. It is one of the oldest commuter systems in North America. Some of the stations are near interesting points of interest. Example is Miiken Station which goes near a giant Asian Mall. You should check it out. Maybe something will remind you of Japan there. Some stations are smack dab in the middle of nowhere. Last but not least. GO did a pilot program where the train terminated in London, ON until like 10/2023.Another train TH-camr was lucky enough to ride the pilot train to London, ON. 7:40 GO trains kind of work on the honour system. They have people (not sure if they are conductors or special constibles) that walk down the cars of random trains and check everyone's ticket. When I used to take the train daily, I could go weeks without being checked. But then I got checked both going in and coming back on the same day. You can probably get away without paying for a bit, but if you run into one of these teams you can get hit with a fine if you do not have proof of payment.

    Toronto is a great city. I have spent nearly four months there over the years. For me, it is a 3 1/2 hour drive but I take the train since having a car in Toronto is a liability and unnecessary since there is good public transit and I like to walk. From here, the Maple Leaf takes nearly 6 hours - IF there are no delays. It was once a 9 hour ordeal.
    Be prepared for a long, frustrating customs experience at the U.S. Border. Customs is much more efficient going into Canada, but there is still an unnecessarily long delay with a wait in a very crowded station. At least the Niagara Falls, US station where you will wait is new and reasonably comfortable.
    It is more than twice as long from Toronto to Penn Station but you can say you went from the second busiest station in North America to the busiest.

    Metra really needs to take some tips from GO Transit. I mean, as a Chicagoan, I like the gallery cars considering I’ve ridden on them my whole life and I also like their quirkiness, but they are woefully out of date. While, some of the stations are pretty good on some lines, especially when you get closer to the city, the stations all need a massive upgrade. Also, the electric line shouldn’t be the only line to be electrified. I still like Metra a lot, but there are definitely needs for improvement. If I were Metra’s CEO, I’d look to GO Transit for inspiration. I also like how the conductor on the GO trains referred to all the stations as GO. There is 15 minute weekend service but yeah for some reason they haven't restored 15 minute off peak weekday service

      @@OntarioTrafficMan Weekend ridership is supposedly higher than weekend right now which kind of makes sense with all the weekend events+ work from home. GO is also dealing with a power shortage so they may not have the locomotives to do 15 minute weekday service since all the lines run on weekdays whereas not all run on the weekend. Can't wait for the wires to start going up so we can order electric locos, it'd be pretty wasteful to order new diesels this close to electrification

    Nice video! As much as I love Montreal’s transit network, its commuter rail network leaves something to be desired, especially in comparison to GO transit. Hopefully they make some changes in frequency and lines, and hopefully they even get some of CN or Canadian Pacific’s rail lines for that.

    Turned on the video for the review and was surprised to see the station I grew up near, lots of memories of everyone on the platform at Clarkson in blue jays getup heading downtown to watch a game with my dad.
    Yeah, Clarkson definitely is a giant parking lot, getting better though hopefully, alot of the area south of the station is set to be developed into residential the next few years, and they installed a walking/biking path along the hydro corridor just north of the station about 5-6 years ago that makes getting to the station by walking or biking less of a nightmare.

    I suppose that Niagara Falls, Canada (and the USA one for that matter)is mainly a tourist destination rather than a commuter town hence it having a more frequent Sunday and Saturday service than a week day one.

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Niagara Falls is 130 km from Toronto so it's not really a commuter town (at least not to Toronto, some people do commute to other cities like St. Catharines or Hamilton). It is indeed more of a leisure destination than commuter.

      @@OntarioTrafficMan Toronto to the Falls isn't too far if you could just cut across the lake (hopefully HoverLink isn't dead). But having to not only go around the lake but also around Burlington Bay/Hamilton Harbour just makes for an unbearably long trip to do twice a day.

    I e always thought it was strange that the Lake Shore East and the Lake Shore West routes are treated as separate routes but they are in reality one route with trains running straight through Union Station.

    • @Thom-TRA
      @Thom-TRA  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not all trains run through. But they’re probably treated differently because of the old mentality of commuter rail, where the assumption was that the train only mattered to people going to and from Toronto. But maybe as they step away from that mentality, they’ll rename it the Lakeshore line again.

    I've been riding GO since I was a kid in the 80s. Its definitely the preferable way to get in or out of Toronto as the traffic congestion on roads and highways is an absolute nightmare. Its worth it if your visiting to get a presto as you can seamlessly transfer from GO to TTC or GO to Mississauga Transit or any other transit organization that uses them. Cheers!
