  • One of Guyana’s smallest Amerindian villages is waging a monumental battle that could decide the amount of control that thousands of indigenous people have over their land in remote parts of this South American country. The village of 225 residents is fighting in court to regain full control over ancestral land where gold miners once were invited in to boost community development but who now are considered unwelcome interlopers who carve up lands that provide food and medicine, and block access for the villagers’ own, smaller-scale mining.

It baffles me how Indigenous residents don't have automatic legal title to the lands they inhabit?
    I hope they win.

The court cases are held in courts where 'business merchants' have more rights than somebody living on the land. Colonial powers only ever appeared in 'colonial Courts' where they were found to be the 'real victims' and deserved compensation. Maritime Law is a different set of rules than 'Roman Laws' when under a 'Roman sword'. 'City of London' type of rule. When 'colonial powers' appear in a court that is 'a different Admin'.
Changes like Africa would be the 'nations' tapped to do a detailed look into how human trafficking began and who was doing what to whom, and for how much $$$. Africa would also be the 'entity' to start a DNA based family tree that goes back to when Europe changed in the 1300s as disease and civil wars broke out all over Europe. Remnants of the Christian Reformation Wars are still being used as an excuse for wars in 21st century Europe.

It is clearly stated that community entered some kind of agreement. Seems that they sold land for some royalties. It is common practice.

The government doing the same all over the country. Evicting families from lands they occupied for decades, with no plan for resettlement or compensation.

The alternative in the past was to become like Cuba, under IMF sanctions. It puts the leaders between a rock and a hard place. Loyalty to Colonial powers is 'thin at best', even when an alternative doesn't exist. China is more than capable of delivering consumer goods to 'your doorstep'. Russian business models introduce an alternative for 'a standing army'. Local development using local resources and locale talent that is then 'exported' for a modest profit.
Venezuela, Brazil and 'West Guyana' all share 'some highlands'. A Chinese owned and operated elevated heavy rail could take refined products to the ports at speeds reaching 200km/hr. The 'fair market value' is then returned to 'the natural land owners and the Merchants that are involved in the export of 'resources'. The owners would be able to use the same trains to bring consumer goods back. The locals would then take over the final leg of the delivery process, the waterways canoes use change almost daily.
'Off-grid' living, with with every power tool that is 'made'. 'LED' camping, so your path lights come on and shut off when 'heat is detected/not detected'. Insect proof 'huts' as well as 'a root cellar' that is cool and dry' for long term food storage. Every nature hiker today has access to 'water purification tablets', consumer goods of the like would be easy to transport and deliver on a scale that the 'locals' would be able to acquire it from companies at 'no charge'. Back home, they would treat their drinking water (and their neighbors) at the rate they consume it. A year later, they put 'more water purification tablets' on the shopping list.
Locally produced goods could be shipped to the coast on the river, as the journey would begin 'upstream', the 'manufactured items' could be part of an exchange market that would be found all along the waterway. At the ports the foreign buyers would buy everything, the profits would, the money given to the local govt and distributed according to amount of product that was exported. The Taxpayers have more use for consumer goods than 'cash', their shopping list is already 'on file' with Chinese shipping companies so the goods showing up is 'sooner', rather than later, or never, like it is today.

3 Nations share the same 'mineral rich ground', the nearest export port is in Guyana, available only by elevated high speed heavy rail. Profits paid to the people every 30 days. Wholesale shopping coupons and free delivery, . . .

@@OjodeGuacamayo By the time Moscow and Brussels settle the IMF inspired sanctions and post-1997 NATO expansion NATO will be disbanded like the USSR was in 1991 and the IMF will be out of the 'money lending' business. That will be about the time the ICC has some judges that will not cater to the bankers when war crime trials and crimes against humanity will start being aired over public airwaves. Chronic liars will label it as 'not our finest hour'.
