Tips and Suggestions for Logging Your Hunting Property

In this video I will share my experiences, ideas and suggestion on the things I learned from logging our hunting property. I will discuss things to consider prior to logging and give you ideas on how to accomplish a woods that gives deer the cover they need and allows you to hunt them. I will start with a list of things to consider and then take you to various examples of different levels of logging intensity and show you the results of logging aggressively five years post logging. I’m in northwestern WI but have ties to Blair and the big white pines remind me of the farm I was BLESSED to hunt growing up!

What does you consider logged hard? Down to 15 inches or 12 inches?

I told the loggers how much canopy I wanted removed and left the tree size to them. I told them to take ALL the poplars for a couple of reason-1. They regenerate and provide awesome browse and cover, and 2. They were all of a size they needed to go, they get too big and they start to break off and become essentially worthless.
Also told them to take all the basswood they wanted for the same reason- but I do love basswood for hiding treestands bc they grow in clumps. Then told them to take all hard maple that were of size and I’d say that would be 15” or up in diameter if not a little more. Told them to leave all white oaks that weren’t damaged or split and then log the red oaks accordingly.
Long answer but I told them by different sections to leave more or less canopy based on all these things.

I'm logging my property soon was hoping to get it done this winter but freeze up didn't really happen.. so I guess it will probably be summer.. they are taking a lot of trees out of my 100 acres I think 1500.. most of them out of the center 80 acres..then I will cut some smaller stuff myself to fine tune my travel corridors and bedding areas

I recommend finding a forester. We used one. He put it out for bid with 15 loggers he had experience with. We ended up getting double the amount that we would’ve gotten with my first choice. That’s with his cost taken out. He took care of dealing with the town, state , and abutters. If I had issues he dealt with the loggers. He spent several hours with me prior to us hiring him. He was worth his cost. I’d also recommend seeing the work of the logger you hire before you make the decision to cut so you know in advance what their work looks like.

Not exactly sure what you mean by that. I do appreciate your viewing my video and sharing your thoughts.
The property in this video has so much more diversity of wildlife now than before logging, including turkeys, grouse, bear, rabbits, deer, fisher, and of course countless other critters. I agree 100% greed is a terrible thing.
