    I've always found the easiest way to visualize the latency aspect of spacing is to think of a shadow image of my character that copies all my movements but is delayed by a fraction of a second. My attacks still come from my 'real' position, but the part of me that can get hit is following my character. The same is true for my opponent, but since what I see is their shadow's position I can expect their attacks to come from ahead of where they are moving. I hope I explained that well.

    • @iamamish
      @iamamish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That is a perfect metaphor, and one I wished I'd thought of. The higher the latency, the longer your shadow hangs behind you.

    I think that failing to understand that I can phase through their weapon while I am moving towards them is probably my biggest weakness right now. I'm a rather experienced player, tons of PvP experience, but since I haven't really been taught these things apparently there's still a lot that's going to be news to me!
    Thanks for making this series!

    • @liamchristian498
      @liamchristian498 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Trust me, it makes a world of difference. Once you understand the whole "phasing through weapons" thing, you'll be able to pressure your opponents much more. Plus, you'll become better at avoiding damage, because you'll now be aware of the fact that your opponent can do similar things.
      Just remember that this only works with high latency.

    This video makes so much sense having seen your last video, I usually invade at SL 90 with my claymor and I trust in my hyperamer too much to make exchanges, now that I am invading in SL 25 and I don't have a hyperarmer weapon, I see myself making the mistake of trading blows with greatswords, and I'm relearning a lot about spacing. This video will be super useful to me. thanks

  • @zalonnz
    @zalonnz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is interesting to add that there is a way to out-space attacks while moving backwards, and avoid "phantom range".
    If the relative distance between the two players doesn´t change for a given amount of time (small but hard to quantify) there is a pseudo-synchronization and attacks tend to respect their original hitbox sizes.
    You can start running backwards when you read a running attack, and if this "sync time" goes by before you se your opponent attack, you can trust the animation on your screen and try to whiff punish it.
    Of course as amish said this time is a function of latency, and hence it´s variable. But there's an "average" time that is safe in most cases, and using a shield while trying to figure it out it is advised.
    As a rule of thumb it goes like this: -If you're moving forward, trust the animation. -If you're moving backwards, be aware of changes in distance. -If you're strafing/moving diagonal then roll.

    • @iamamish

    • @iamamish
      @iamamish  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@phamduongthanhlong46 yes! As you learn spacing & timing you'll probably play in a fairly reactive way - that is, your movements will be based exclusively on what you see your opponent do.
      However once you start *predicting* what your opponents will do, your game can go to the next level. For example, you can accomplish very impressive spacing when you're able to start a whiff punish before your opponent's attack has even started!
      Making reads and predicting your opponent's next moves is key. You can also learn BS fishing (especially in DS 3, less so in ER), and that will help you be more well rounded and also help exercise your prediction/read skills.
      If you aren't already, check out JeeNiNe's channel and his DS 3 videos. He's the best there is.

Whats about that spesific type of latency then your opponent sorta invincible or get some hits, but you get everything he throws at you? :) Sometimes he get all hits, but second later and have endless hyperarmor coz of that, but you take all hits immidiatly. I confuse about this type of latency coz it dosent looks like your opponent suffering from any effect of latency. He react normaly and can do predictions or actions on reaction but you cant predict what hit connect and what not.

    • @liamchristian498
      @liamchristian498 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's less to do with latency and more to do with your opponent's dodgy connection. Chinese players (using VPNs) or players with really bad wifi are great examples of this. Even the best players will lose to these dudes.
      High latency fights will be predictable, if there's a consistent connection. The fight will be tough, but relatively fair.

    I duel on the undead arena, so you don't know who is considered the host and invader, so spacing can either be super easy or you get hit from miles away, which really disrupts my play style. I always notice that spacing is easier as the invader, compared to in an undead arena match. Like, Glaives have a naturally deceptive range, but I still space them almost perfectly. Same for an UGS. Yet, in the arena, I can't space them. While invading, it's like they can't even hit me. It's weird how this game works sometimes.

    • @iamamish
      @iamamish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be thinking about this incorrectly, but I am not sure how it would matter whether you are the host or not. Everything is always relative to the other player, so whether the world is yours or your enemy's, it should only matter for things in the world itself, like PVE (obviously not relevant during an arena duel).
      I've had problems with spacing but it is usually due to uneven terrain - do you experience the same thing in Round Plaza?

      You first have to determine what type of player you’re facing. Some will mindlessly swing when you’re in range. Your goal with them is to just trade. Those players are easy.
      The 2nd group are players aware of your hyper armor. They’re going to avoid trades. With these players you can just get in their face because they’ll be afraid to swing and trade.
      Getting in their face is how you pressure with an ultra. You can also try blocking with the weapon against small weapons that won’t break your guard if you accidentally get hit.

    haha.. funny im here because it was due to iamamish's good spacing when i fought him that i googled "spacing ds3" and this was the top vid. and some rough attempts against solid pontiff gankers. im prob better than 90% of ppl in the game but realized that 1 weakness will get exploited and that someone that can 5-1 u out of a bo9 might be a smaller gap then u might expect weather it is a weakness against a certain weapon type and not dealing with it properly or being able to punish/space better than me as my conception of it is lacking.
    if u can address those weaknesses.. the tables could flip an u could 5-1 them because now u have those small advantages u can exploit that they don't know how to adjust to

      If you've never faced somebody using a setup like that, it can be a rude awakening. It's hard to reaction roll, so you need to make reads on me, and anticipate when I'm likely to swing. Also, if I start pressuring you and doing the L1 waggles, start attacking me.
      You can also try to space out the estoc and bait whiffs that you can whiff punish.

      to ur last point.. thats the goal. learn the spacing and such.. but man u were on my ass and my teammates were getting destroyed by w.e. insane tech amir has recently come up with.
      ds3 pvp again often reminds me of fighting games where the easier it is to predict someone the fight becomes so much easier as dealing with a flowchart player is much different then having 10+ different possible and only really being able to mentally prepare myself for 4-5 of them as u begin to feel overwhelmed. ur mental capacity gets taken up at that point so stressing about the few u can handle quite well fall to the wayside as your are too concerned about the ones u cant deal with... makes for a rough time
      i would have to think it is similar to some invades i do where i parry the same host 4-5x in a row without taking riposte or atking ever and they start the prostrate gesture... as they have already tried everything they are capable of (dont worry i usually bc out after giving them quite few embers.. i always respect the new player trying to get a win off an invader.
      but then again i get discouraged as basic things like pivot backstabs and rolling backstabs and the aforementioned spacing issues make ultra class weapons a real pain... worse so, is that at 500hrs in game i should be able to do all of these things

      @@im_cart8656 absolutely true. I need to talk more about this. As you get roll caught the panic impulse gets stronger and your ability to react properly diminishes. You can see this with my fights with players like Gabri.

    Honestly I'm way too aggressive for spacing my opponent's attacks. It just sort of seems like passive play to me. It's boring to me. I like it when both people are aggressive.
    It certainly Beats waiting for each other to swing 1st only for it to like never happened, & you wasted 2 minutes in the arena.
    Spacing is just a fancy way of saying "which one of these 2 assholes has more patience" it's just waiting for one guy to lose his patience for him to attack 1st then for you to counter attack it. Feelsbadman.

    • @iamamish

      If you try mindless aggression against anyone good they are going to destroy you.
      That said I agree to an extent - you still want to attack outside of just whiff punishes.
      If you only try to whiff punish your opponent can take advantage of you by being more aggressive and just ensuring you have to roll to avoid the attack.
      You absolutely have to space, but that shouldn’t be a synonym for passivity.

      @@iamamish I understand. I don't become a mindless ghoul when fighting, I do what every other average player does. I just don't like passive play which seems to be a lot of what people do in the arena. That or are just extremely laggy.
      I play a pyromancer you see, just a long sword in hand as well as The Parting pyromancy flame. I usually swing an R1 on purpose knowing that they're nowhere near me only to bait out an attack in exchange I ready up a black Flame or bed vestiges for when they come to punish me.
      It works a lot of the time. Surprisingly. Although I do understand what you mean. You are correct. Out spacing is not the same as being passive.
      It's just I think Dark Souls pvp has a massive passive play Problem. Most people just don't seem to swing unless you do 1st.
      That's probably why I'm switching to invasion. Much more aggressiveness out there, compared to the arena. Although I don't really have to worry about people running considering flame surge is very good at chasing down.

      @@NPC-dc9so yeah I know a lot of fighting game aficionados point to games like Tekken and SF where if you're too passive, you can get backed into the corner, which is a bad place to be. The game punishes overly passive play. DS 3 unfortunately does not adequately punish passive play.
