Canoe Camp - May 2013

  • This is a seven day canoe camping trip round the loch. It shows some of the local features including the remains of an old village now in ruins and the old grave of a 'Campbell' who once lived their in the 18th century. The paddle is atmospheric at times as the weather changed considerably over the period. of camp but unfortunately the bad weather episodes I didnt record. I also describe some of the bushcraft gear that I normally take on trips. Its recorded on a pocket camcorder and a mini DV that I use as it has reasonable optical zoom. It is wild camping on areas chosen round the loch for their remotness and suitability.

    Mr. Collin, I enjoyed your video very much. It portrays the essence and beauty of canoeing. Even though it sometimes gets cold, rough weather sets in and other challenging issues arise, camping by canoe in my mind is one of the most satisfying ways to enjoy our beautiful Earth. Yes Bob, we had friends who lived in Aberfoyle and our first visit was 1976.we toured all of the central highlands, oh what a fantastic time. Subsequent visits have not been as often as I would like although we did spend three days in Edinburgh a few years ago my wife still says its her favorite city in the entire world.I'm retired now and I want her to see the highlands keep those videos coming and perhaps we will be there soon Thank you again and kind regards

    Inspiring and very thoughtful presentation, Bob. I was particularly struck by the little rocky island appearing through the mist, on the Loch, at the beginning of your film. I like how you've kitted out your LR Defender too. Your camping stove is an inspiration. I'm intrigued as to its construction. It looks as if it gives good radiant heat like a pot belly stove. Also, when you described your kit, I noticed the large diameter black Poly Pipe and wondered if this is what you use to house your cooking utensils. You seem to know what you are doing! I live in Queensland, Australia and often go away camping on Astronomy weekends, exploring quiet, dark, night skies. I'm still learning, and finding ways to be more economical with equipment etc. This is why I'm asking so many questions!! Lovely scenery, masterfully edited film, great music; the whole package. Well done sir!

    • @BOBC001
      @BOBC001  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, Thanks for your positive comments much appreciated. The construction of the stove is featured at the end of my other movie 'Wild Camping Loch Tay 2011', it does radiate heat and is a secondary gas wood burner design. Regards, Bob

    • @BOBC001
      @BOBC001  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Cannon Tommy thanks for commenting. My fieldcraft isn’t much of a science I’m afraid. I chose my shelter generally as a wide door open fronted tent with a tarp extended across the mouth to create an open view it’s an attempt to recreate the old campfire tent as used by Bill Mason the great outdoorsman and canoeist. I built my little stove to be a secondary gas wood burning stove and it’s always served me well. Other than that it’s a bit of a fraud as I just use my knife, bush saw or axe to chop wood to fit the stove and don’t carve spoons or build shelters or anything that could be considered bushcraft certainly not as I see it described and shown on other TH-cam channels. I guess I just see my outdoor activity as practical common sense gained from being in the ‘Scouts’ as a boy and am no purist in my fieldcraft techniques but I just love being there and do what I have to to be dry and comfortable. I do love trying to capture on video my experience though and thank you for your really nice words on that as well. Thanks for watching, cheers from Bob.

      Bubba hi! The music is mostly by a duo who go under the name 'Secret Garden'.They play some really nice material which I thought sympathetic to the overall mood I was trying to create. CD's are available and ITunes is probably a good source for single tunes you may like to obtain. Thanks for your nice comments, Bob.

      So I suppose a Loch is what we in America would call a lake?

    • @BOBC001
      @BOBC001  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bubba, Yes exactly, its a Scottish name given to bodies of water. We have fresh water lochs similar to inland lakes and sea water lochs which are inlets round the coastline which could be a strait, bay or fjord. In Ireland it is spelt slightly differently as 'Lough'.

      With my last name and ancestry I should know that!! I have always wanted to come to Scotland and do some backpacking and backwoods travel. I am also a fly fisherman and that passion/obsession/addiction that also began from your neck of the woods.

I did make the stove, if you watch my other footage 'Wild Camping, Loch Tay, July 2011' when I used my kayak for a similar trip you will see at the end of it details on the stove. Great for canoeing trips but too heavy for backpacking however I still enjoy using it though when I can. Bob.

    I want to get that bg knife but was worried it's not legal to carry or wear while canoing

    • @BOBC001
      @BOBC001  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Servante Its correct that it illegal to carry such things as knives, axes etc. and I wholeheartedly agree with that. Those however undertaking bush craft and some specific outdoor activities have a need for such tools and used carefully with common sense provide no general threat. The law is broadly published and you can get online guidance on what is and what isn't allowed. Expert guidance/ information and its compliance will allow you to be sure what you do is within the requirements of the law and help you enjoy using such tools. Regards, Bob

    Hi Bob. Just wondering what model your mad river canoe is? Also how do you find it in rough water? Im looking to get a canoe, so doing some research. Thanks

    • @BOBC001
      @BOBC001  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi its a 'Reflection 15' in Royalex. I had an Old Town Charles River in PE before that but it was too heavy for single paddler portageing and general use. From memory the Reflection is 27kg whilst the Charles River was circa 35kg. In one of my earlier Loch Tay vids I show how I laced up the Reflection and a bit more about that canoe. Carries loads of gear for camping/touring and though its not as deep and has less freeboard sits well on the water tracks well and handles sweetly. Can do light rapids but designed more for flat water, have been out on some days when the wind has blown the waves up and its stability is good. Plus for me as a solo paddler you can just turn it round and paddle in reverse to get optimum trim. Bit small for two paddlers to go camping though. Regards, Bob
