Can I call myself "Dr." after receiving an honorary doctorate?
In some countries, like the United States, honorary doctorate recipients are allowed to use the title of "Dr." before their names, whereas in other countries recipients must add the initials "h.c." to their doctoral title. In any case, we ALWAYS recommend that honorary doctorate awardees use the words "Honoris Causa" or the abbreviation "h.c." to indicate that their title is honorary, not academic.

Harvest Christian University is a diploma mill. If you have an honorary degree it confers post nomials, not pre-nomials. example: a doctor of divinity is john doe D.D. not Dr. John

I feel that this video is extremely misleading. The honorary doctorate is not a "terminal degree" in the academic sense! For example, if a celebrity (let's say a musician) with no post-secondary education is awarded an honorary doctorate in music and then they decide that they want to actually get a formal degree in music at even the bachelor's level, most colleges and universities will not accept their "honorary degree", as it is not substantive (i.e. it has no substance). This means that although they may be an accomplished musician and may even have a number of their music-based coursework waived (e.g. they can test out of music theory, music history, piano, etc) they would still have to complete the general education requirements (science, language, humanities, english, etc.) for a formal degree. For example, the rapper Lil Wayne was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Houston in 2008, after earning his GED. Later he enrolled in a bachelor's program in psychology at the Univeristy of Phoenix online. We can be sure, that his honorary doctorate was in no way useful or applicable to his required coursework for the bachelor's as there were no "credits" to transfer! This means that for all intents and purposes, "Dr." Lil Wayne still had to start from scratch when attempting to pursue his bachelor's degree. This statement is not meant to undermine his exceptional music abilities and contributions to the performing arts, but only to illustrate the limited utility of an honorary doctorate. This topic is often a murky one in that the honorary doctorate is regularly awarded to uneducated celebrities and formal academics (with substantive earned degrees) alike! I do find this problematic, especially when the use of the title "doctor" is adopted by individuals who, in some extreme cases, never even graduated high school, as in the case of comedian Danny Thomas (he was a dropout awarded and honorary doctorate but I'm not sure if he actually used the title). There is MUCH controversy and dissent, at least within the academic world, regarding the awarding of honorary degrees. There are many four year colleges that don't even offer any formal doctoral degrees that still award honorary doctorates to celebrities or accomplished alums. Many people understand that such awards are usually simply for publicity and financial gain as wealthy celebrities bring their notoriety and checkbooks to many of these institutions. I think the general public may often misunderstand both the value and limitations of honorary doctorates so it is critically important that they are not misrepresented as anything other than an award, NOT an academic achievement. Again, this is often conflated because accomplished academics are also awarded honorary doctorates; however, such scholars almost never list them in the education section of their CVs, they are named under awards and honors. As an academic, I will also acknowledge both my biases and authority on this topic as I have 6 earned degrees, including 4 master's degrees and a PhD.

Oh, you are so right! Thanks for the clarity - when I did the video I was thinking about other prestigious academics that get honorary doctorates. That being said, there are wonderful people that do wonderful things and they get a honorary doctorate. The key thing is to look at what institution is awarding the doctorate and why did they do it.

when you use the word terminal and the say not in an academic sense you confuse yourself. First The last and highest degree a person can get is a Terminal and thats the Honorary Degree. The one they give to President Bush, Obama, Clinton, Ophra, Denzel Washington, Missy Elliot and Aretha Franklin.. Lastly you are repeating yourself because postsecondary education is exactly what people already have proved when they receive honorary doctorates. Not stop being a hater and get your or change the field, that is if they are even paying musician enough to have the extra time you do to complain.

I contributed greatly to Psychology thru books and various projects and recieved an equivalency PsyD. How I see it is real world experience ON PAR with the academics of a 12 year doctoral program, "We recognize the inputs as equal to or greater to our education." It's a statement of comparability, experience, and success in the real world versus a formal academic path.

An honorary degree is an award given to people who make some remarkable or significant contribution to their society or the world. It is not to certify professional knowledge. One should, therefore, refrain from using the title Dr.
In Hong Kong and Singapore, rich people who have donated some huge sum of money are often awarded an honorary degree as an acknowledgement of their efforts. If they use the title Dr, they are telling others that they pay for it. It is a business transaction then.
Some people make their contribution due to their position in government. An honorary degree is also an award and not a certification of their knowledge in the area. They should also refrain from using the title Dr.
The title Dr is reserved for those who earned it through their academic achievement. By default, they are independent thinkers. If they take sides, due to their jobs, they never use the title, notable example, Condoleezza Rice.

I am sorry but this is just plain wrong.
Let's take some examples. Vivian Thomas, Gordan Parks and Paul McCartney.
All 3 of these men have honorary doctorates and ALL are absolute titans of their respective fields. No amount of achievements in the realm of academia could possibly measure up to the absolute greatness achieved by these 3 men. No amount of homework or the acing of exams would give any post grad student any leg to stand on compared to the accomplishments of these 3 men and others like them. This is what the honorary doctorate is all about. It is about recognizing greatness above and beyond what can be certified in an academic setting. It is about acknowledging greatness achieved through pure merit that it meets and exceeds the university's standard for issuing such a degree and to me there is no higher honor.

I received a Doctor of Divinity from Spiritis Sancti Seminary and Christ University based in Aransas Pass, TX. My Bishop is Professor Glenda Green. She is an educator by profession, having taught at Oklahoma and Tulane University.
If I understand correctly, with her being a professor, her books count as text books correct? It took me 4 years in total to finish. I was also ordained as minister and chaplain.
The course required proof and study of enlightenment of scripture, her own course books, study of history of Spiritis Church, and a self selected practicum/ understudy of serving, charity and ministering to others for credits. I chose to work at a wilderness therapy program, and lived outside with troubled teens and young adults for a total of 638 days in all, consoling and mentoring them.
    Is this legal?

You earned that honorary doctorate for your service and contributions to the community. Everyone isn’t just handed a doctorate if you didn’t earn it academically you sure earned it through service. I have no idea why people try to down play an honorary doctorate. If that’s the case me studying in my field of metaphysical philosophy meant absolutely nothing cause I had to go through seminary school as well and present homework, take exams, volunteer my services for free, etc. Congratulations!!! be proud of your accomplishments over 600 days of work that’s not anything small to me. Good luck! On your all of your future endeavors!

Just a thought but isn't it possible that the person who receives an honorary degree has already put in as much or even more committment to what they are doing as anyone who is studying for a 'earned' degree. Worth is not just reserved for those who pass exams, those who work in the real world may be found 'worthy' just because of the discipline, commitment and knowledge that they are using to the betterment of others in the real world.

Doctoral candidates spend a huge amount of time researching, writing and brainstorming through this long process in academia to complete the program. I do agree with Farrah Kong, if want to be called Dr... then finish your bachelors, masters and apply to graduate school and then you will understand what I mean.

Honorary degree holders may be addressed as "doctor" by the institution that awarded the degree, they should not generally be referred to as "doctor." A recipient of a D.H.L. should not use the title "doctor" himself but may list the degree on his resume and may use the letters "D.H.L." after his name. -Reference

Even other Universities and Colleges agree that this Professor is correct. " HE IS A PROFESSOR". Benjamin Franklin was one of the first to receive an Honorary Degree and he Called himself Dr. If the school awards it then it is acceptable. He is a PhD who understands the difference. So people who have an Honorius Degree feel free to call yourself Dr, unless the school says you can not.. Forget the haters!

I always cringed when chiropractors and even practitioners would use the title "Dr.". I just found out through corruption and political leverage, people can get honorary doctorate degrees in fields that do not relate at all to their profession at all.
If the person has contributed so much to society, it should be nothing to put some of their wealth into the university in question to pay the tuition and whip up a PhD dissertation taking from their experience right?
(full disclosure, I do not have a PhD. I hold this title in very high esteem and hate to see it get watered down)
