- Rassie Erasmus is grateful beyond words for the incredible honour of receiving an honorary doctorate from the NWU today. The honorary doctorate was bestowed on Erasmus in recognition of his innovative and exceptional management of the Springboks during their victorious 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup campaignsHis significant standing in the international rugby coaching arena, his strong drive and focus on diversity and inclusion, and his commitment to social responsibility.

These types of speeches are usually packaged, boring affairs; this was different on so many levels, the real Rassie shone through and gave us all such an insight into what makes him tick & the human he is. So good for RSA & rugby in SA to have such a legitimate leader playing such a role!

It just goes to show that genius comes in many different ways. Rassie represents the best of us all - he knows what he is good at and what he is not good at, and he accepts it with good humour and grace. Thank you, NWU, for showing non-academic people that life is about achievement, not a piece of paper.
