Learning content is difficult enough on its own. But in many cases learners have challenges that prevent them from learning optimally. In a system that expects learners to perform at the highest level in order for them to gain entry to tertiary institutions, we need teachers who are capable of identifying the challenges that prevent learners from learning. This is easier said than done. Teachers are often not trained to identify these barriers or we simply miss these barriers because we are preoccupied with the administration side of teaching. In this episode I share 5 ways in which you can identify possible barriers to learning as early as possible.

It is sad what some kids go through. There is so much that can influence children's ability to learn. Even bullying in school can be an issue.

Bullying is one of the biggest barriers to learning. We have to find solutions. Sadly, this is extremely difficult when you do not have the support of parents. The solution lies within building relationships between teachers and parents. Thanks for the comment Nicky :)

Many learners come from low income families. Some struggle with transport and them miss school because of strikes etc. There are some learners that are diagnosed with ADHD or ADD.

Since well you said that we should not diagnose our learners. I think I have a child with ADHD. The symptom are there and that is the Barrier that I'm currently facing on saturday school.

ADHD is probably one of the most wrongfully diagnosed barriers in a classroom. I would suggest that you have a discussion with the parents and school management to find a solution. Thanks for the comment Simon.
