From my personal experience, when you are raised in a predominantly black culture, where people you consider your peers (in my case, I consider them my brothers even to this day) are black, there can be a disconnection with other white people (so-called "my people"). It's not a term I used for all white people, just those who were racist. However, being much older now, I don't use that term anymore, for the same reason I don't use the term "n***a" as a term of endearment for my brothers.
