Great video. I need to say, I was with the band the before they were to leave to record their album in the States. Their manager and I were talking and he suddenly took a call on his phone, it was the Rolling Stones, asking if JET could do their support for their upcoming OZ tour. Called the 'Sophomore Slump', ya'll! And yeah, the other commenter is right about the amount of time you have to write the songs. Guess that's part of what sets the greats apart, how they manage to keep blowing you away/expanding. Like when Radiohead was "oh, that 'Creep' band??", then put out the Bends which was about as perfect a guitar-driven album you could make and shut everybody up, then "OK Computer" came next and blew the doors off even that record...but yeah, it's a tough spot to be in
They just ain't that good. Full stop! A couple of great songs doesn't make for a great band. Seriously, 3 albums of mediocrity over 10 years. Get born!
Oh man, funny that you mentioned The Vines as I first saw and heard of Jet years ago where they opened for said Vines. The first single, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" had not hit yet and we had no clue who they were, but hey, free concert! We were all blown away and it was an amazing thing to have been a part of, especially being in the front row in this small club in Arizona and right next to some groupie that was following them around (saw her in a concert video they later put out and recognized who it was). Then The Vines came on and the mood soured. They were horrible, no one knew any of the songs, the lead singer was babbling incoherently and at one point dumped a can of Coca Cola on himself for no reason. When they decided to play "Get Free" and the club turned into a mosh pit for two minutes and immediately back to standing around waiting for the show to end. Shame what happened to Jet but they were kind of a one album and done band, but that live show where they took down the house is something that has stood out in my mind 20 years later.
@snakedriver I have always maintained there are two types of bands: Concert and Studio. Concert bands are the type who go out and play live and sound great, much like their albums. Then there are Studio bands who put out a good album and sound horrible playing live and it's clear they had a lot of help with the auto-tune and mixing. I can verify 100% that Jet was a Concert band and The Vines are so far Studio it almost needs a third category just for themselves.

Although it had a small, not very well lit stage and a fuzzy P.A. they frickin kicked ass BIGTIME. Not sure about America but here in Oz they had a bagful of hits.

@@coyotelong4349 Kinda like Crowded House in a sense. Don't Dream It's Over is their biggest international hit, but if you check out the rest of their repertoire they're actually an amazing band.
I don't know, I was around the rock scene in Australia at the time and while there was a lot of commercial success for Jet (radio play, magazine covers) there was also a lot of pushback. Nobody bought the We Never Heard The Iggy Pop Song story. They just seem to come up really fast, which isn't the way many beloved Aussie bands did it at the time which was to have an EP or debut indie album get airplay on JJJ radio, get on Homebake festival, etc. Their early gig experience was basically a bunch of industry showcases and then they got signed. Plus, there were a bunch of other Aussie bands who were doing it better but never got the big breaks. You Am I had been doing the same kind of thing for a decade and they never had the record label behind them. Powderfinger were mulit-platinum artists in Australia while maintaining alternative credibility and could have been big international artists but the industry couldn't get it to happen. Dallas Crane were making waves as an up-and-coming band in Melbourne. There was a band from Sydney called Sway around the same time or a little later who were drawing from the same influences as Jet but doing it much better. So somehow, despite Australia having probably the best indie/alternative music scene in the world between '96-'03, Jet jumps over everybody to land on the cover of every music magazine with their too-perfectly messy hair and brand new leather jackets talking about getting back to the roots of rock.
Fun fact: I just came across this video and read this comment, and I never knew they were from Australia. Im from America, but am obsessed with Australia. Eventually someday I wanna end up there and stay. And some of my favorite bands are from there. The living end, bodyjar, parkway drive, and of course the kings, silverchair. But I never knew jet was from Australia. Granted I also wasn’t that into them. Also, unfortunately, that’s just the way the music industry works. I was in a semi-successful band here in the states. If a label can create a band or artist themselves that they know will succeed, they will. Signing a band is gonna be a 9 out of 10 times failure. And I’m not saying that JET was an industry plant, but if it went down the way you explained it, it kinda sounds like they could have been. That, or the industry knew they had a monster hit with “are you gonna be my girl” on their hands and pushed the shit out of it and the rest of their music got pushed aside.
Iggy pop is mostly only known for hipster garbage. It was obvious Jet took inspiration from the beats and the music of Can't Hurry Love and other Motown songs. Alot of s*ssy journalists know nothing about real music other than what hipster garbage they think they are supposed to like. Same with Elvis Costello.
Screw the critics. Let the music do the talking. In other words put your money where your mouth is. Jet is awesome. Sorry to hear they went to bad places. I hope they have found their centre and will still rock on.
I only had their 1st album (I think) but seem to remember thinking each song sounded like another band from the 70s-80s. I could be mistaken , but that’s what I recall.

Could you do a vid on Korn drummer David Silveria and his split with the band? If you've done one already, my bad, but if not that'd be a cool vid. Keep up the good content my friend! 👍🤘
I have a David Silveria related video coming up but I love your idea. Can you please use the request form in the description box?
I agree, I like this idea
Totally great album
I loved these guys as a kid. Still think Get Born is a fantastic record.
To think these guys are no longer active but their fellow 2000 Aussie rock bands The Living End and Eskimo Joe are… makes me often wonder what went wrong for them… thanks for this video explaining exactly that🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Since you’ve done these guys, I would love for you to do a video on Powderfinger! Another great Aussie band
Great band!!!
jet was Is Awesome
Never heard of this band but I do remember seeing that album cover while working at Best Buy.
A great great live show
This bands been the soundtrack to my life. Got to see them on their reunion runs across 2017 & '18. Based on it being the 20th Anniversary of the debut and the recent On Air With Jt interview with Nic, it turns out they intend to hit the studio this month and try to hash out some new stuff.
GOOD to hear!
I remember them supporting Oasis on their Don't Believe The Truth tour in 2006, and they even appeared in the Oasis road movie "Lord Don't Slow Me Down", performing "Cold Hard Bitch", them and Kasabian were supporting Oasis then.
Reminds me of high school math class. Me and my best friend would play this cd front to back while solving math problems. Luckily our teacher was ok with cd players in class
Get Born was an epic debut album.
There 1st disk was killer
The early to mid naughties was the last great time for new Rock Music. There was so much good material being released. And there was a cool wave of new bands making a splash in the scene. Probably the last ‘scene’ before the net took off, took over and changed things forever
It never ended in Australia, we still rock out you guys just stopped paying attention. After the naughtiest we had DZ Deathray, Violent Soho, Dunerats, Skegss, WAAX, The Chats ,VOIID and too many more to list
I recall seeing them live at The Annandale circa 2001/2002 with around 300 other punters. There was a buzz going round that these guys were going to be the "NEXT BIG THING". They didn't disappoint. Although it had a small, not very well lit stage and a fuzzy P.A. they frickin kicked ass BIGTIME.
Not sure about America but here in Oz they had a bagful of hits.
Look what you've done was also their great song
Rip off of sexy Sadie. Like all their single they were ripoffs of more famous songs in a cynical way of gaining traction. Are you gonna be my girl is straight up iggy pops lust for life
It sounds like a rip on imagine to me...
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
BRILLIANT SONG.!
🤘🏻🌏🇦🇺✌🏻
Such a boring song.
@@Tweekend27such a stupid opinion
Soooo much potential to become more than three great albums.
Great Band. Great Rock N'Roll.
Great video, maybe also covering Mando Diao at some point?
I’ve never heard of them. But the fact that the name of the band was “Jet” pretty much says everything I need to know
Great band. Didn't know they were Australian. I always wondered what happened to them. They were a breath of fresh air for old rock guys like me, along with their garage rock contemporaries.
I remember at the time, "a band on the radio with guitars and no vocal effect?! Alright! I'll take it!"
No. They're nothing crazy, but at least they were an actual band at the time.
Update, jet announced they're finishing up recording on their first new album in 15 years it will be out in 2025 they just released a sneak peak of the new material a track called hurry hurry
I love The Vines. They along with Stripes, Strokes, Hives, Kings, Yeahs, Interpol and other did bring new life to Rick music
Are You Gonna Be My Girl sounds so much like Iggy Pop's Lust for Life, I can't hear the former without thinking about the latter.
I remember hearing something about iggy pop being a fan of them. So there's that
He did a song with them
@@ZapperRS Iggy said he was ripping off a Motown sound when he made Lust for Life so he certainly wasn't mad at Jet.
Really enjoyed their hits back in the day. Jet was most defintely a one-and-done album band.
🤧BULLSHIT.!🤧
hits?
You ought to hear Nic's work with The Jaded Hearts Club (supergroup consisting of Matt Bellamy, Graham Coxon, Miles Kane, Nic himself and more)
They had multiple hit albums, although I think only Get Born really hit it big in the US and overseas
@@coyotelong4349 Kinda like Crowded House in a sense. Don't Dream It's Over is their biggest international hit, but if you check out the rest of their repertoire they're actually an amazing band.
Shaka Rock was made for Australians one of the greatest Aussie rock albums ever
Also author song call RIP IT UP was used for a Australian Holden car Commercial in 2006 nice car .
Yeah me too I was around the Melbourne scene from 98 04 never heard about them Eskimo Joe were pretty known playing at the espy
100% this
...and Jet were dull
@@christopherkimber7679 So move there, that oughta cure your obsession...
They were never lumped in with the White Stripes or The Strokes by anyone serious.
Hey the vines were fun
Screw the critics. Let the music do the talking. In other words put your money where your mouth is. Jet is awesome. Sorry to hear they went to bad places. I hope they have found their centre and will still rock on.
I only had their 1st album (I think) but seem to remember thinking each song sounded like another band from the 70s-80s. I could be mistaken , but that’s what I recall.
They wrote a few really good songs. I always liked them but I admit, I don’t know much after the first 2 albums.
The time to walk away is when you become your own tribute band.
They didn't when they did
