    What a splendid symphony!
    It really should be played more often. Apparently, it was Rimsky Korsakov’s favourite Tchaikovsky symphony and you can definitely see why - it’s probably Tchaikovsky’s most colourfully orchestrated symphony (perhaps a bit too colourful!). Rimsky even conducted this symphony in concerts in the memory of Tchaikovsky after his death.

    32:18 is such a rollicking passage when the trombonist actually plays with any kind of meaningful bite. It's a mystery why only Russian orchestras can seem to figure out that the trombone has the melody there. The passage just sounds confusingly muddy if you can't hear the trombone, but that's exactly what even esteemed conductors like Karajan will do to it.
    Not to mention, most other orchestras take it so slow it sounds plodding and lethargic. This recording here is the correct tempo, obviously. It actually *feels* like it's in one.
    In general, if you want good Tchaikovsky interpretations, look for Mariinsky Theater or the USSR / Russian State Symphony. They will usually do it right. For some unexplainable reason, no one else quite seems to get it, and almost uniformly they will fail to capture that raucous Russian energy when they need it.

    Finally, I found the recording of this work that I have loved since I was a child! For the life of me, I couldn't find this recording until now! Only Svetlanov and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra could bring out that most delicate and "yearning" flute line near the beginning of the third movement! No one has ever been able to bring that out as beautifully as Svetlanov! Absolutely stunning!

    Fantastic symphony! I'm surprised they don't play these not so well known symphonies more often. This is Tchaikovsky, after all, one of the greatest Russian classical composers. This symphony is a first on me, until now!

    Very passionate work and excellent performance. hadn't heard this composition in a long, long time. Had a long-play recording of it many moons ago. The fugue is the anecdote of the 'big-tune' finale, or vice versa?

    I admit that for many years I felt this by far the worst Tchaikovsky symphony. I still think that perhaps it is but oh!, what beautiful moments there are, captured splendidly here by Svetlanov and the USSR orchestra. It's such a shame that the finale is so weak in construction and in melodic inventiveness - if only he'd revised it in later life like he did with the 1st and 2nd. I still love it, as I do all Tchaikovsky, but it could so easily have been made wonderful as a whole if the finale had been replaced. Thank you so much for uploading the score. Invaluable.

      Despite its flaws and inconsistencies, I have always adored this work, and I think the Andante is indisputably one of the loveliest things Tchaikovsky ever wrote.

    • @agapanthus1953
      @agapanthus1953 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the 4th is by far the worst...showy, noisy, vacuous!..... a suite in fact since any symphonic connections are tenuous to say the least. This one is beautiful and sincere.

      The structure of the last movement is the same as the Finale of the second string quartet, fugato included.

      @@agapanthus1953 what? Noisy and vacuous is a matter of taste, but there is clear unity in the 4th

      @@agapanthus1953 there is a quotation of the first theme of the 1st mvt in the finale, there is so unity within the symphony. I think both symphonies are amazing but in very different ways.

    Little Russian symphony much better effort by Tchaikovsky but Svetlanov and band make the most of it. I prefer Markevitch crisper and more propulsive take on this work. But still with five movements of music,Tchaikovsky comes through with drama and melodic attractiveness. Nice to have a score to keep ' score'. of this symphony.

  • @littlewishy6432
    @littlewishy6432 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The music is great, but the score has many mistakes; particularly missing rehearsal letters everywhere.
    I’m aware that in the actual music it skips certain letters, but even then, this score doesn’t have all of them.

    • @littlewishy6432
      @littlewishy6432 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mvt. I: The parts show U, V, W, and (for whatever reason) Z. This score shows U, but doesn’t show V nor W. Both U and Z are in the correct spots.
      Mvt. V: Pretty much every rehearsal letter in this movement is wrong.

      Tchaikovsky appreciated a lot Rachmaninov's musical gift. He was kinda Godfather to Rachmaninov.
