- Now bigger for the American market, the 2012 VW Passat goes up against the midsized competition with 3 engine choices and a lot of standard features. Automotive journalist Scott Newell takes you for a test drive in Tennessee, where the Passat is built.
@TopGear759 agreed, but they are obviously saving a s*** load on building it here, because its $7000 less expensive than the previous generation. plus, it is still german engineered.
@TheUkrainePower - It's "European", not Eropian, but I agree, people in the USA are obese and can't really drive....the TDI will outrun any Detroit diesel without being overhauled. I saw a 2000 Passat in Germany with 720.000km,running strong. It had the 1.9 Tdi. Europe makes the best cars on the planet, enthusiasts know this and agree. People who just need a lift from A to B keep buying boring, cartoonish, yestertech overpriced trucks that can't handle and consume unreal quantities of fuel.
@TopGear759 for real, some might say "thats unpatriotic" but i would much rather my car be german made IN germany.
Why do you people care so much about whether or not this car was made in Germany?
@imaldon1 But I'm pretty sure the main reason the car is cheaper is because it was built in America thus making it more appealing to more buyers, and idk the quality of this car looks pretty good and it sounds like it drives pretty well, so I don't see why the fact that it wasn't built in Germany really matters.
You will end up saving eventually over the long run, but it all depends on how much you plan to drive the vehicle. If you travel 15-20k miles a year, then the extra cost of the TDI will offset itself only after a few years. If you only drive 10k or less a year, you won't break even for a very long time. I would say wait until the 2014 model when the 2.5L gets replaced by a 1.8L I-4 Turbo (I believe) but it seems like you need one sooner than that!
If VW wishes to compete and grab a large piece in the highly competetive mid-size sedan market currently under the dominance of Japanese & Korean manufacturers, this the way car to go and it must compete in price, value and reliability. If this car was to be manufactured in Germany or any other european country, certainly it will cost over $35,000. VW plans to manufacture over 800,000 vehicles before year 2018 and it only can be done is by producing value-added cars in the US.
@dms0087 If YOUR BABY was made all in Germany you wouldn't have it in the 1st place cause you couldn't afford it, all designed and finalized in GER but with adjustments in other countries they kept the prices low so you can afford it, SO pls think b4 you speak.
look so cheap, and they want to be a number one on the world by 2016 well good luck.the old vol was much better the new one cheap cheap quality.where is halogen lights.i prefer my passat would get bild in GERMANY. BILD IN USA BIGER THAN EROPIAN ONE DO U KNOW WHY BECAUSE IN USA PPL ARE SO FAT.
VW Needs to have a Passat Wagon with the Diesel and the DSG available in a Mid-Trim.
I Will Guarantee that they will FLY OFF the showroom floor! I seen this happen when they introduced the Jetta Wagon (mk-4) and it was gas only. Everyone wanted one with a Diesel!
Not true. This "U.S." version of the Passat will be the only one offered in North America (Canada, U.S. and Mexico) and... China. The Chinese version is the same as in the U.S., but built in China. No 4Matic is planned for this version.
WTF is that Y is it different? my car is VW JETTA but my jetta is not 100% made in GERMANY made in MEXICO..I don't like this shit...if I have more money I will buy imported car from germany 100% from GERMANY not US or I should move to GERMANY hahahaha IDK
Yup. They're also saving money on basic stuff like reflector instead of projector headlamps, lack of LED technology in tail lamps, cheaper interior plastics and lack of an efficient gasoline engine.
@tadam25 My guess is that they are trying to keep costs as low as possible and make the options sheet as simple as possible. If all goes well they may bring back awd.
I don't know if you noticed, but BMW and Audi have stopped selling their Touring and Avant (wagons) in the U.S. Wagons just don't sell anymore. SUVs sell.
thinking about passat SE after our '01 chevy blazer finnaly passed out at 155,000 miles, idk weither desiel will be worth the extra money...suggestions?
I'd rather spend my money on rolls-royce, but alas, there's not enough of it, so I'm considering a Passat. Funny how that happens, isn't it?
the fog light is on cus of the turn, depending if left or right turn the fog light turns on ;)
I would rather my car come from germany and still feel right at home here in the states... just like all VW's from older years..
AWD is expensive, brings down the MPG and most Passats of the previous generation weren't ordered with the 4Motion.
Umm, the American Flag was definitely slightly shredded at the beginning of this video.. did anyone catch that? (0:10)
Passat is the best car ever made ,is luxury and commes with lots of hp so it makes passat like a racing car :d
why dosent the US get awd because i know that in canada we will be getting a awd version with the vr6?
Due to the premium fit & finish and quality of the vehicles manufactured in West Germany.
1:54 the bulb light is on. I have the same issue with my 2015. Lol.
yes your rite, i need a car within 6-12 months, and i drive about 10-14k miles a year
To avoid more fuel consumption typical in AWD or 4WD vehicles and also price hikes.
Maybe he just wanted to show how much room there was with the seat down. Geez.
doesnt the V6 have sport suspension?
Quality control issues indeed. @2:20 one foglight is out. Oh, VW.
VW needs to stop this crap (for the american market).
It looks too much like its younger brother the Jetta
Good job Alex...May I buy you a drink??
@Freshbdatboiibrandon cool story brah
I'd rather my VW come from germany.
@HRG86 Yea I agree, destination fees would jack up the prices. I like it, it's still German designed and Mostly German parts, just put together in the US. Also the machines do most of the work when building the cars so It's not like it won't be the same.
@maximusfuscus GOOD POINT
@ossanamama92 Simple explanation. That was an easel assembly I was loading in. The whole thing wouldn't fit through the ski pass-through. For the sake of keeping the video brief, I only showed the first part going through. Hope that satisfies your bafflement.
why no 4 wheel drive?
I agree.
