    Thank you my man. A most effective yet simple layout. Having problems with ground squ
    irrels. I just know that this will work. Your grand dad knew what he was doing.

    Nice ethical video, even though you are dealing with a pest 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    I raiae rabbits. I make them a "burrow" like your box trap to put in each cage. They can get inside the burrow to feel safe. In cold weather they get in the burrow at night.
    I build the boxes exactly like your box trap. So, if i need a trap all i have to do is attach a door, staple wire across the back end and drill a hole for the trigger stick.
    The fact that the wooden box smells like female rabbit should make the trap more interesting to other rabbits.
    I make the front end a little longer so it can be a porch for the rabbits to sit on.
    They say that alfalfa pellets make good bait for rabbits.

      ive been raising rabbits for about the last year and a half and do something similar and you reminded me to put thier hide boxes back in their apartments now that it is cold. during the summer i take those boxes out so they have more room. im not sure that wild rabbits like the domestic rabbit pellets. in my growout cages, they have a wire floor and the spilled pellets drop through the wire and onto the ground, and i have never seen a cottontail eat them. the chickens will when i let them loose in the afternoons though :}

    I like that design. When I was younger I trapped rabbits during hunting season with a box trap with a sliding door and a closed back end. The rabbits would normally only go in them on the coldest nights when they were looking for warmer shelter. The your swing door looks like a easier setup and more efficient than the sliding door.

      ive heard that before about them not wanting to go into a box trap unless it was really cold, but these ive caught bunnies on hot days in the middle of summer. I think by having the back open, and by setting them in their runs, that they act more like snares without the things I don't like about snares. box traps are so much more flexible and safer than snares as if you catch the neighbors cat, you just let it go instead of having to explain to them why it wont be coming home. of course these are town bunnies, and I get to know their habits pretty well as im trapping them, which would be totally different than trapping them in the wild I would think.

    A pretty elegant trap, that. I hunt, but I just plain like bunnies too. I think that’s a great solution to separate my backyard pals from my neighborhood garden. Thanks for the instruction. Love your town; good place to live.

    Put a piece of orange tape on the top of the pole. When the trap is sprung, the flag will be visible from a distance. You can also use wire on the bottom. This will allow the rabbit to eat a bit while he's in the trap. If you have a predator problem, use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire -- it's harder for a dog or coyote to destroy. Great video.

    Cool trap. Glad you did the video. I really like the coat hanger locking mechanism on the door. That's very clever. And as always, glad you're so concerned about the animal not suffering.

      thanks man! these have worked pretty good since I built them. and I would bet that if we are having this problem with the bunnies, that others are also and this is the best {and most legal} way ive found to deal with them so far.

    After watching a bunch of videos on rabbit trap building, I built this one. I was sceptical but hoped I would catch a bunny. Well, it works. Not assembly line style bunny catching, but about one a week.

      @joecalton1449  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      good to hear that it is working for you! one a week for one trap is pretty good I think, that's 50 rabbits a year and can make a big change in a neighborhood

      Joe Calton one a week for three weeks. Lately, nothing. Maybe it’s because I don’t always put the trap back in the same place. Oh well. I was supremely surprised to catch any at all.

    Bury the rabbits in your garden... good fertilizer and returns all they eat to produce better veggies

    What do you use for bait for bait and rabbits

    • @joecalton1449
      @joecalton1449  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      when im after wild rabbits, I dont usualy use bait, just the empty box. set it like a snare in places where they are traveling anyways. or in a spot where there isnt alot of cover and they will go in there without bait. when im trying to catch one of my domestic rabbits, like kits that find a tiny hole in the fence, then i will put some of their food pellets in the back, or maybe some oats and then sprinkle some on the front of the box to catch their attention. never had good luck with pellet food and wild rabbits though. you could also try carrots, apples, pears, pumpkin, corn, bird seed, bread, ect....

    Majority of the time if take a wild rabbit from its familiar habitat and place it in an unknown enviroment they will die, they become confused and become easy prey for a predator

    In my state it's illegal to relocate captured wildlife. Check your local laws.

    • @JOLLYROGE007
      @JOLLYROGE007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      just because it is illegal doesn't mean it can't be done; just don't get caught.
