- Howdy! fellow adventurers, welcome back to the Beagle Barge Beagle Adventure. In this episode, Wavey and I are on the trail of Mark Twain and his boyhood home. Out of all the river towns we've stopped in so far, Hannibal does have a special feel about it. We hope you enjoy the Beagle Tour...

Matthew 6:25-34
"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ..."
As always, thanks for sticking around. See you again soon...

Really Enjoyed seeing Hannibal! Di and I drove through, many years ago. I have read Mark Twain's, Adventures of Huckleberry Fin (so long ago, it needs to be read again!) and wanted to dip my toes in the Missisippi as a tribute! We crossed to the east side and found a road that ended on the river, south of the highway. It looked much like the spot you pulled up on but more sand. You likely could see it, just accross from you!!! Partly, why I felt I was there with you. From that spot, I could see down the river, an island with a back chanel and imagined places like this long ago. Then, they would be pure wilderness! We wanted to stay longer but a bad storm blew in! Two storms that joined and we were in the middle! We jumped into the car to try to beat it but instead got caught in the middle. Sideways rain and hail, I was wanting to pull over but realized that we would be stuck behind it, so instead, we pushed through and stayed out in front for most of our way home! It turned out this front caused many tornados all the way north! We were tagged by it in Chicogo when we stopped for the night. When back in Canada, we heard the same front hit Toronto and had caused flooding by torential rains! It had caused deaths north of Chicogo as we slept at a hotel pounded by the rain, Sad but facinating to have followed your weather from Kansas, to Canada!!! Dorothy, truly had reason for her bad dreams!!! AllthebestRoy
Hi Roy! Your channel is this weeks "shout-out of the week" in description;)
Thanks so much Brenton!!!@@backwatersandbackroads
Men were proud of their work back then.
I just wish I knew where you are at real time.If you are going down the Tombigbee I live close to Columbus.
17:18--Twain's "Life On The Mississippi" describes a hot, dusty day in a Mississippi River town in the chapter titled: "A Steamboat Landing at a Small Town". Twain describes the town as dead, deserted. The town drunk, asleep. An eagle eyed drayman spots the black chimney smoke of a paddle wheeler from afar and cries out "Steam boat a'comin'!" And suddenly, like a light switch turned On, the town is alive with activity. The steam boat lands; passengers disembark while others wait to board. Commerce of all kinds are moved on and off the boat. Lots of cursing by the deckhands. And Twain writes that in about 10 minutes time, the steamer backs away and heads down river until even the plume of smoke from her chimneys are gone. The town goes silent and the town drunk falls back asleep in his chair...
I have to read his books. He's got to be the most quotable person to ever live
They don't build them that way now because of costs. The only thing inSt. Louis that will not be a tear down is the Gateway Arch! Changing subjects. Twain's quote abt dogs and Heaven show his understanding of God's Grace.
When I drive, and I do so for many miles when I can, I listen to Audio Books. It's calming, I feel more reflective, and I get to hear stories I may not read on my own. Hope you are having a great time as I try to catch up with you on your loop!
I love listening to long form content while slowly going down the river. Podcasts are my favorite;)
You might enjoy the book “TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE” by John Steinbeck.
Late 1800's early 1900's we had old world emigrant craftsmen that took pride in their work and saw opportunities to be had. They build companies with idea that their children and grandchildren would run the company for the next century. Today we are quarterly profit driven.
You got it. Saying it better than me. Thank you
I've read Huckleberry Finn at least a dozen times. A wonderful panorama of human personalities.
It's just change of the times Brenton. Everything is prefab now . Get it built quickly and getting open for business. Modern day
24:15 - Great question...I find myself wondering the same thing. I will ponder the question and get back to you. For now, I'll try to be grateful, happy and stay positive. Have fun anyways
Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. MUST read. Epic books
Once you've read any of Mark Twain books you want to read everything. Tom Sawyer was just like one of your friends.
Read Kurt Vonnegut. You may never read again. LOL. Apologies JKing!!
I know I’m late but if the screen door latch was installed from the door to the frame it would be so much easier to latch and unlatch
That sounds like the smart way to do it! ;)
Great video as usual. Hannibal like a lot of small towns in Missouri and all over the United States are littered with those brick buildings that produced the goods that got us through two world wars and beyond. Those now empty buildings are monuments to the countless families and generations that worked there and were supported by them.. In Missouri we had factories that produced shoes and boots for the military and the civilian market. No plastic crap from China. All gone now. Safe travels Brenton & Wavey. This video rates eight Waveys also. (no fishing)
I like going to place in the "off" season. Somehow, it feels more personal and more of a feeling of discovery. I think local folks are more relaxed, too, because they're not dealing with all the people flooding their towns. Yes, those flooding the towns are supporting the economy and the locals welcome their visit, but at some point, they need a mental rest. JMHO. 😊
Nailed it ^^^ I'd add (living in a tourist town of sorts) if it's a season, why don't they sell shooting permits? :) kidding!!
😁👍@@backwatersandbackroads
I know I'm 3 months out of date but I think it well worth your time to read the books, especially if you will suspend your "modern" perspective somewhat, read them as a teen (late 70s early 80s) and again 2 years ago, amazing what a 30 year change of perspective does to an old favorite story😁 I'll have to see if you point out Jackson's island after I start supper in the slow cooker and eat lunch
I plan on reading them and should have already ;) thank you b
Why am I so fascinated by your videos and can't wait for the next one? Thanks for sharing what you see.
Itchy Boots has nothing on you.
As to your question about what happened; I am convinced society has become so atrophied by Velveeta cheese, Venice in Vegas and all the other "theater" that they no longer recognize the real thing and expressly reject it. And so it all brings us back to the suggestion that we are living in a theatrical mashup of Lord of the Flies and 1984 performed by people who don't know the references.
"We have one that can see!" -They Live ;) you got it. I feel like an alien most of the time.
I live near Elmira NY, where Mark Twain is buried. He spent his summers here, and wrote some of his most famous works here. Everything is named after him in some fashion.
I do enjoy your videos
you keep making them and I will keep watching them
Very interesting insights. I concur. You’re a talented videographer and storyteller
The answer you're seeking is actually the topic of the book you've been wanting to read. Lots of people migrate to the city after growing up in a slow paced lifestyle. A few very large ag facilities do the work of thousands of small family farms. The only successful small communities have found a way to repurpose their attributes. It's to bad our political system can't be more supportive...
Good luck. I'm sure I'll see you to the finish line. I'm getting interested in trying the Great Loop.
Well..... I got a metal detector for Christmas and the kid and I have been digging up EVERYTHING in the yard! 😂 Got so busy when I looked up you had posted two episodes so it was like having a full length documentary. 😁 I continue to be amazed with your courage and patience. I love the care free go lucky lifestyle, there is no doubt about that. Hey guess what? We named our C-Dory and I think you will approve. We will call her C-Shanty!!! I was excited to share that with ya. Keep on keeping on Captain. The dialog never gets old and we are entertained and excited for what tomorrow may bring. God bless ya as always. 🙏
I love that name! Cdorys are always so fun to name :)
@@backwatersandbackroads I thought you night just like that name. My mom had a Jon boat for years named "The Shabby Chic" and my grandaddy ran a tiny skiff named "Bassbuster" (except the B somehow came off). 😂 Good times I tell ya. 😉
Glad you went to Hannibal. I'm currently living in Northern Missouri, and I love that town.
I've noticed most of the cities up here do have a lot murals on their old buildings.
Your right about the new housing industry. I used to work a lot of new construction of new homes and they sure aren't built like the old ones.
👍❤️✌️🙏🇺🇸🛵🚣♂️
Whoopee…..another episode
I've been waiting for you to get to the Missouri/Illinois stretch of the river ... I've lived in the St Louis area my whole life and throughout my youth and well into my 20s we'd drop whichever beater speedboat one or the other of my parents had at the time into one of the public boat ramps on the lower Meramec River , hang a left once we hit the Mississippi 😊
I've got far too many great memories of those trips up and down the river to even attempt typing up on my tiny phone screen 😊
Nowadays we drive up to Grafton every few weeks . While not quite as cool as taking a boat it's still a gorgeous drive ... take the Great River Road one direction and the car ferry the other
On weekdays once the weather cools off there's not much to do - many of the shops close up completely in the winter - but it's still got that cool old-timey river town feel to it .
Maybe it's just me feeling nostalgic but regardless of the season and no matter the day of the week Grafton has always felt like Saturday to me ❤ 26:15
Hanibal seems like a cool little Town. The adventure is in the journey.
Great video thanks for showing Hannibal and Quincy area...safe travels..keep em coming!
Yes I really enjoyed the tour of Mark Twains birth place. I had wallpaper of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer when I was 8. I remember reading those books in school, I also had a teacher that was found of Mark Twain and would read us a chapter or two of his books every other day. I hate that his books, being factual to the time in which they take place has been banned in the schools today. We can learn a lot from them still and it’s a good idea of how life was back then.
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) Hannibal Mo. home town
Another well done video, Brenton.
Jolly good ol' Brent. A very interesting video.
Every one of these small towns makes me wonder if the state has reciprocity and if they need more divorce attorneys, because I love those old buildings.
Good life for a Dawg.....hell, good life for human.
I wish I could remember the video I recently watched about the differences between how old towns were built slowly with steady tax revenue and investment. They compared it to modern city that will sell out for quick profit but it creates a major problem when the infrastructure needs repairs. It was really eye opening about so many modern problems are created by quick growth with no solid culture, industry and long term residence.
There's just something about Episcopal churches that catch my eye. Every time you do a church tour, I can tell immediately if it's Episcopalian 😂
Another great video !!! Safe travels !!!
In my opinion Small Town retail has been killed off by first the shopping malls, then the big box Walmarts , and now the online Amazons. I think the only hope for some of the neat old buildings is to turn them into homes. I've noticed this with the old closed churches too. What do you think? A changing economy right before our old eyes!
Unfortunately the developers charge so much rent most folks have no hope of renting a unit, it is a crying shame...
Hey bud, enjoyed the content. Here is wishing you 'Fair winds and following seas'.
It's strange that all the old towns that you've been going to seems to be deserted more or less. I wonder where all the people went. I live in a small town, but you could never stand in the middle of any of the roads in town or you'd be run over. LOL
Read Huck Finn as a kid. Have it downloaded on my tablet and will probably read it on our 7 day Caribbean cruise in January.
Try Roughing It. Free audiobook on TH-cam.
Everyone was busy making money. Then wanted to display it. Consider Western Towns, tents with wooden fronts. Act like you want to be. Dirt privies and a Mansion. Fur coat and no Knickers.
Beautiful old architecture built when men were proud of their work.
loved this show... thank you!
If you stayed overnight in the hotel and your boat didn't get stolen that's a good town.
Read Roughing It, beats everything, it’s free on TH-cam, and it brings the Old West to life like nothing else
A Tramp Abroad is also a hoot.
Some questions can’t be answered; they must be experienced. If I may suggest keeping a record of your questions and see if during journey the answers present themselves.
I am of the opinion, you are doing it right.
Adventure on,
the Capt’n
Middle of the day, on a weekday, and your view count is way up !
I guess everyone took the day off to make sure they did not miss one of your fantastic videos. :)
Good view od Hannibal as it is now. It is another of the historic places along the Miss. Glad you found gas close to the water, I think that might be harder further down Enjoy
You can down load all Twains books for free off the internet All very entertaining and would be great to read on the Mississippi.
Nice to hear that you've been in good old Europe once . lots of nice waterways also . You would love them . lt's like boating through a countrys backyard . good Video ✌️
I was wondering the same thing for many years about the town's and some cities in the states being empty.. I visited Cleveland about 13 years ago and mid day myself and a group of friends took a pic of us in the middle of the street in downtown Cleveland and not one car drove by... Try doing that in Toronto or surrounding suburbs around Toronto and you'd be flatten by so much traffic.. We only seen a few people as well as we walked from the hotel to the Rockin Roll hall of fame... It always struck me as odd ..the people we did stop and talk to were very kind and hospitable.
love your knowledge and narrations and music you put into your videos * looking foward to Summer 2024 and some Wavey n you time * from Tom n Susie * God bless you brother * always .. oh Watch out for the Wolves *
I’m planning a trip to Hannibal this spring.
I have an old soul, like you. Love the history.
That's what it is. We're old souls ;)
bro, youre tied to a tree..lol! I don't see a need to tie up to driftwood on the ground..haha next time throw an anchor of the stern and pull it tight then adjust your bow anchor line to the depth you want the boat to stay at is all you need to do. 😉
Hello from the quiet frosty Ozarks Brenton! Another video of value. Hope your well and enjoying your day. Our business world have changed to the throw away society. Its rare to see any construction of permanate value. You know your safe when you can beach your boat and return and its there how you left it. Very few churches are being built with steeples and bells and most blend into the building around it. you have to look for it up close. Tight lines and bent poles and fair winds and follwing seas!!!
Great video! My grandparents & parents lived in Hannibal. It was my second home.
And a pontification from a retired builder;
I concur with your assessment of modern subdivisions. These developments have one purpose, lock bill payers into a modern state of slavery. Well before the loan is paid off these buildings will require a major remodel investment - to keep the investment. Owner (slaves) will be in perpetual debt to whatever institution holds the note - - which will be passed on to whomever is the next (slave) purchaser.
A fundamental change should be made in the construction industry. Houses need boots, coat, and a hat. Foundation, siding, and roof. These should be 200 year systems. All the interior should be built is such a way that it is easily changed or remodeled as generational needs change from time to time.
My biggest challenge in the renovation work I've done over the years was in correcting really bad ideas and practices like asbestos and particle board. Leaded solder and cast iron plumbing etc etc.. The old style brick and mortar buildings in these liminal downtown areas have burdened modern communities with expensive and often cost prohibitive restoration needs. The old saying - "They don't make em like they used to" is not always a bad thing.
Americans are enslaved to debt.
What a fantastic adventure. I grew up on the Ohio river. Enjoy yourself!
Enjoy the videos, looks like you are having a great time. I would like to take the time off sometime and do something like that. Hope this helps a little. Thanks!
It helps a lot! Thank you! Happy New year. It's going to be a wild one.
As always thank you go at Gods speed.
"“Right is right, and wrong is wrong, and a body ain’t got no business doing wrong when he ain’t ignorant and knows better." Tom to Huck when discussing breaking Jim out of jail...
Morning!
Nice video. I've heard about Hannibal, but never been there. Another bucket list item to do.
Love it Love it.
My wife and I just found your channel. At first it was the metal tent camping but now this! Very interesting perspectives. Why don't we build buildings to last etc.? We now are a society of fast food and a thrill a minute. We have shifted our aims away from building for the future to what can get me off now or how can I get ahead? It's really sad. We are being pulled, cajoled, bamboozled and manipulated into being sold the idea that things are better over there and over here if we just follow what we are being sold instead of looking inward toward what value and just being ourselves and building for our children and their children a better life. We have all fallen into this manipulation. Not sure where it stops at this point. I really enjoy your reference to scripture. It says a lot. You are a retired guy like me I think. On a side note,,,we love camping up in the U.P.. Mt. Bohemia has some decent skiing and Blind Sucker is nice for Upper Light hunting with our grandkids and giant Pike fishing! Glad we found you.
@NoFeeArea Howdy! Welcome. I agree with your thoughts on building and looking to the future. We definitely (as a culture) aren't thinking ahead to future generations, I think that ended completely around 1960s? That's why I always say "we're living in an open air museum" you know the UP?! Cool. I absolutely love Superiorland. My home until the end.
I grew up reading Mark Twain's book, Huck., Tom and Jim and rafting down the Mississippi I'm surprised i didn't run away but i had it to good at home. Not a Mississippi adventure but Robin Lee Graham sailing adventure on Dove all awesome adventures, like your adventure i like many no doubt were on the boat with you . As for old towns old buildings to me they are Awesome we went to a antique mall other day - a old cotton mill back in the day and was pointing out all the nails in the hardwood floor slats just amazes me the craftsmanship.
I have a question for anyone who cares to answer or guess. Why do so many churches have a single bell tower set to one side of the building rather than having the tower placed in the center or balanced with a matching tower on the opposite side ?
Thanks for the video Brenton !
BTW, Not all and probably not most buildings that were built a hundred years ago were built to last. The buildings that are still standing are probably not necessarily representative of most structures from past periods, they are only the ones that survived. Even among the old brick buildings the ones that were not maintained did not always fare as well.
@mydixiewrecked2 when I realized how common it was for one side of many churches to have a bell tower while the other side of these otherwise balanced buildings were missing a tower, I wondered if the missing tower was for fundraising. They could always ask members to contribute to help "finish" the church building and when another worthy cause would come up the donations would be diverted.
Deep thoughts. Good verses.
Thanks again.
Your Shallow draft really opens up beautiful free places to spend the night or take a quick visit to the local sights.
Shallow draft really does open up a whole new world. Easily doubles the places you can go...and even more importantly, leaves everyone behind
You nailed it !!!!!
Another very interesting town & history. Great thoughts. Definitely the adventure is the journey, not the destination.
Lovely, tyvm!
So I have driven from Minneapolis to St Louis countless times over the years. One of the things I have really enjoyed about this series so far is seeing towns like La Grange. The highway is inland a ways from the river, but I see signs for a lot of the towns you have visited, but have never seen the towns themselves before.
Is it me, or do the Lock Masters seem friendlier the farther south you get?
I do drive through Hannibal. It has always seemed like a declining town. Twain means less and less to the younger generations, and Twain is what Hannibal is all about.
As far as modern buildings and products, this country has largely become all about the bottom line. Everything is tied back to that. I don't think the bottom line is the most important thing in life, but I think the majority of people do, We have been conditioned to believe it's all about the market, and the bottom line is the single most important thing in the market. Profits before people or anything else for that matter. Sad.
That was a good video
Outstanding, thanks
I watch all your videos. I wish I knew you were in Hannibal. I would have liked to meet you. Hannibal born and raised here.
I'm sorry we missed each other. Hannibal was a very neat place to explore. One of the highlights so far
Great Beagle tour! I have been there in July and August. Packed full of tourists.
Good questions
Thanks!
Thank you!!
Brenton, fair winds🤝✊. Mark Twain👍👍👍. В России очень любят❤Тom and Huck👍
Happy new year my Russian friends ;)
@@backwatersandbackroads 😉 мой Американский друг✊🤝✌⛵
Another great episode! You just keep knocking them out of the park!
most of Hannibal is on the west side of the river. hwy 61, 36 ,72. it's pretty busy over there. I trucked through there quite a bit. good video
I really enjoy going to the old towns and walking around. Sometimes i can get an idea of what it was like in its hayday. You're right, they dont make em like they used to! Have a great new year and be safe!
I’ve got to do this
Thanks for bringing us along on your journey of river life. Speaking of change. What is your next idea for the next Shanty boat? What have learned from this one that you want to pass along onto the next one? Does doubling the beam and 50% more length fancy you?
My wife and I were in Hannibal in the rv this year. Great town. The caves were really cool and neat to learn that they inspired some of his stories.
Appreciate ya
Please read Tom and Huck as written, not some P C version.
Love the Beagle Tours!
Built to last and built for beauty and the windows opened, where did we go so wrong that new buildings look like jails?
Thanks for the walk around Hannibal
I believe the problem is that kids no longer read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. I have visited Hannibal many times by motorcycle, never find the town crowded with tourist. Mark Twain has lost his status as an American Folk artist. About 6th grade we read the Mark Twain story and had the idea of floating down the Mississippi River a few miles from our home north of Minneapolis. Living near a small lake we build a bunch of rafts that did not float very well. Okay if we all stood in the center, but if one of us got near the edge the raft would turn over. Lucky that none of drowned.
I agree, the Spirit of freedom that a story like that represents is all but gone in America now
Today’s mark twain is Howard stern. look what we’ve accomplished.😮
You said something about today’s construction are build to destruct shortly after built … I said something about prior generations before now I think about the future generation walking around only to see the slabs where there were castles were to provide industrial sites or homes were … wonder what that future person is thinking…
Another great inspiring and relaxing video, thanks!
You need a long pole to manuver the barge in the shallows
We have an 8 foot piece of driftwood.
Hannibal is most busy on the weekends
The Beagle has landed Too Funny! Do you have to use alcohal free gas?
I am saddened to see that much of America is now empty. I see this happening in a large portion of the rural Midwest, and I suspect much of the rest of the country.
I would love to be doing what you’re doing, but I couldn’t enjoy the trips in these towns because I would be worried about my boat being left alone. Have you ever had problems with anybody messing with your boat.
I’m not sure why more of these towns don’t add at least a visitors dock. With a free 48 to 36 hour stay, and a dock close to a fueling station and wind break if winds are a constant problem. I bet they would get more tourism dollars. Or a simple wind break off shore you could tie to and come to shore on a dingy.
I always enjoy it when you and Wavy are exploring these river towns but I have to wonder...where are the people? I don't see any traffic either. You can even walk in the middle of the streets in some of these towns and no cars in sight. What's happening in your opinion? Just curious.
It's good. We all got some Woody Guthrie in us, if we're lucky.
This land is your land...;)
