  • Howdy! fellow adventurers. In this episode, Wavey and I tie up in an abandoned cement plant near Clarksville, Missouri. It's been abandoned since 2008--and we aren't the first ones to explore it. Of course we have to ponder all that happened here. Men working long hours, raising families. loud machinery, churning out (in this case) industrial amounts of cement. What happened? Does America no longer need cement? And what comes of those families who relied on good paying jobs that actually created value? If you know the answers to such questions, please comment below.

    That little town of Clarksville was probably built on steamboat travel and agriculture. I also lile to walk through these towns, imagine the prosperity that built them, see the big old houses and imagine, this one was the banker, this one was owned by the shopkeeper, etc.

      Howdy. I do need to sit down and figure it out. I can guess around 1500-2k a month, with half of that approx being keeping the home fires burning so to speak. A couple monthly bills I can't escape from and utilities/phone etc. Not much on this day and age. It's a lot more fun to do it on a budget in my opinion

    Brenton, 3100 acres of the cement plant land was purchased by a port authority with the aim to build a new port. The large 2 chimney cabin you pointed out is called a dog trot cabin likely all built with hand hewn logs in I would guess between 1830 and 1880. The open area was used for kitchen and washing even sleeping on a hot humid summer night.

    It bothers me that the owners of the cement plant in Clarksville (The Holcim Group) has abandoned what appears to be 12 barges in the Mississippi River. I had wondered if the company might have gone bankrupt and there was no corporation or individual left to enforce cleanup efforts. This is not the case for Holcim. They are a multi-national corporation with US administrative offices in Chicago. Also interesting to note that the company promotes their "Green"environmental policies and carbon reduction. Sorry for the rant. Thanks for the video Brenton !

    • @michaelgarrity6090
      @michaelgarrity6090 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They probably didn't own the barges, some fleeting company did and maybe they were a small operation themselves that when they lost this contract, they didn't have a need for those barges anymore, so they simply abandoned them in this now forgotten and forsaken backwater. I've seen this kind of scenario play out all along the Ohio River in the past three or four decades. Somebody should call Chad Padracke and his Living Lands and Waters organization to let them know about this area. They are an organization out of Moline, IL that has a complex of barges that they use as their base and means to do both volunteer small scale clean ups of the Mississippi and other rivers and they have the heavy equipment necessary to cut up and remove old abandoned barges like these. They have probably removed thousands of them over the years from all the big rivers that they have worked on over the years.

    That was neat to see the old abandoned cement plant. I always find it kinda sad to see old industrial facilities shut down like that. My dad worked for a small privately held company that had several significant sized ductile iron foundries in Dayton, Ohio. He bought out the last one living member of his business partner group. I joined him then in the company and we made a go of those two foundries but we eventually shut them both down due to the fact that the kind of products we made at those facilities faded out. We made big items in those foundries for other large manufacturing companies like the auto industry. We made lots of things for FORD and GM and farm implements like John Deere and Massey Ferguson. We made dies to stamp out auto parts like doors, hoods and trunk kids but those parts soon went to being made out of fiberglass or aluminum. Same for some of the parts on farm implements or they began to source from places like China. It was sad for us that we had to lay off our employees that made a great living working for us. Fortunately we still had one foundry left in nearby Indiana that made items still in demand by what's left of American industry. That company is going great gums but we sold it to an employee group we set up. You can be sure that this little town took a big economic hit when this place closed down. There are lots of places just like this little burg along the Ohio River. They once were thriving communities but for the most part today, are at best fading ghosts of their former selves. It's just sad to see. Safe travels wherever you are actually at now.

    Love the boat and your way of making videos. I love those river towns along the Missisippi. My question is what are you going to do when you leave the relatively protected waters of the inland? Are you hoping to hug the Florida coast line along the gulf due to your shallow draft? Lots of treacherous waters there, and though your shanty boat is seemingly well built, crossing the long gulf stretch seems risky! Lots of open sounds etc once you get up the east coast as well.

    So here we are in July 2024 and I'm up to episode 16. I've been thinking that you could benefit from one of those collapsible wagons that they sell on Amazon or even in Walmart. When they're assembled they look like Little Red wagons but they collapse down to very small profile. I just watch you carrying two cans of gas which I estimated 5 gallons or 30 lb in one hand while you have the other hand extended holding video camera. You don't even use a selfie stick. So I was thinking that wagon would be of help to you if you thought you could use it. I don't suppose you could use it as a trailer behind the scooter, but if you're walking, it might make you a little more efficient in what you bring back to the beagle barge.

      We made it! So far;) the Tenn-Tom is very wild, and phones don't work much on the bottom half. We made it to Mobile. Looks like more winter is coming.

      I'll try, but honestly I hardly pay attention to the day of the week or even month most of the time. After a while ot starts to go by seasons out here. We're in Alabama currently.

      @@backwatersandbackroads I understand losing track of or not having to keep track of the day or date out there. I find myself wondering how you handle things like Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day etc. as well as the weather and temperature at particular times of the month/year. I hope to follow your route sometime soon. I will continue to follow your journey however it unfolds. Stay well.

      The bottom half of the Tenn-Tom has almost no signal. We've gotten into the Mobile area last night. I haven't been able to check anything. I always reply to PayPal donations, but sometimes the messaging isn't set up on the donaters end to reply. Also, I can't always cross reference who donated over there with their name here on YT. Please understand.
