Toyota has LOST its way

- Has Toyota lost its way? We saw a turnover of key leadership positions last year to include the CEO... The new Toyota CEO (Koji Sato) replaced the grandson (Akio Toyoda) of Toyota's founder... and Koji is carrying a totally different approach. An approach that isn't in alignment with the core values we've seen from Toyota in the past. Buying a new Toyota has always revolved around 3 things: 1) Reliability, 2) Simplicity, and 3) Affordability. Those 3 traits lent itself nicely to great resale values. Not anymore. The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma and Tundra are total flops. Dealerships are having to SLASH prices and offer insane APR interest rates in order to actually move their inventory. They've stacked up on dealer lots this last 1-2 years. Only with HUGE discounts and great rates are they able to sell them. People don't love the new Tundra, nor do they love the new Tacoma. People are voting with their pocketbook right now. Which is why we see soooo many brand new 2024 Toyota Tacomas and Tundras just collecting dust on lots. The move to smaller turbo engines was a misstep by Toyota.
Toyota wasn't "forced" to downsize motors due to EPA/emission requirements. They're just incentivized more to do so by the government is all. They get less credits back from the government with naturally aspirated V6s and V8s. That's all. Nobody is "forcing" their hand. It's a money move is all. Dropping the engine size... moving production entirely to Mexico, and slapping $50K+ price tags on them... Yay. And $65K+ for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter. That's disturbing. Get a Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison or Ford Ranger Raptor instead... for a bit less.
I truly do love Toyota, and I know that gets lost in these videos. I want Toyota to stick to the core values that have made them great... not go with woke route. What are your thoughts? Do you agree? Am I being too harsh on Toyota?
Thank you for watching as always, I sincerely appreciate your support. If you haven't done so already, please consider Liking and Subscribing... More candid critique like this to come.

So awful that Toyota is making more money than ever before. You do know that product planning takes years right? Every you see on this new Tacoma was put in place well before he took over.

Toyota is dropping the ball big time.. WTF is wrong with these idiots?
Well I"m sure they probably thought (wrongly so) that the toyota fanbois would pay any toyota tax that is thrown at them. But I'm reading on the forums that many long term tacoma owners are not taking the bait. I hear they are buying ZR 2's for 48K, or frontier P4X's etc.. The segment is red hot with good options and Toyota has literally priced themselves right out of the mix. Price wise they aren't even close. You buy this brand on credit figure 200-300 more/month (I actually did the math on this). Somebody forgot the basics of business here. That is to do a feasibility analysis. Because at these MSRP's its not sustainable. Not even remotely so.

Bring back Akio Toyoda, he had the right idea!
Why did he leave?
@@johnnybravo5044 The public reason is that Toyota's previous Chairman of Toyota left, so Akio stepped down to become the new Chairman. However, behind the scene there were murmurings that, although the company has been doing well with their hybrids, Akio disagreed with how the company was advancing too quickly in turning the rest of their lineup into hybrids/EVs. Slowing sales of those products have proven him right.
Akio approved this generation of the Tundra though, and the Tacoma was well into development when he "retired" and became Chairman.

Your title is not wrong. I am Japanese living in Canada. Before my family came to Canada, my father had a corporate career with Toyota for 17 years, and he has been disappointed with Toyota's current choices and direction, particularly with their 4x4s and North American market. He says their "global platform" might save on production costs, but it is a bad idea, long term. Alienating regular customers kills any business. If someone dislikes the turbo 4 cylinder in the Taco, it takes every other Toyota mid-sized 4x4 off their potential buy list. The English saying " Never put all of your eggs in one basket" is learning the hard way. Toyota limit R&D funding to develop 4x4 platforms, especially for North America. The 6th gen 4Runner was designed by Toyota America. Toyota is now just selling Too many different name badges on one platform. Too many! Every Land Cruiser, the 6th gen 4Runner, new Tacoma, GX, LX etc. They are ALL the same now. The mid-sized GX 550 is apparently heavier than the "full-sized" LC 300 Series.
Unfortunately Toyota has become like American manufacturers and just leveraging popularity of name badges, slapping popular names on anything, rather then respecting what these brands are supposed to be...
The 6th gen Toyota was an after thought... I understand my dad's disappointment
So true, there is a huge difference between a 4Runner made in Japan and a Tacoma made in Mx. If I had my choice I would buy a new 70 series but we can't have those here.
You can’t blame Toyota. You can blame our government and the silly, unrealistic mpg requirements.
@@thomas735 then why does Ford still offer the Coyote V8? And Nissan still offers their V6 in the Frontier. Blaming the government is lame.
@@Pb_Slinger they won’t be able to offer those much longer and still meet standards. Just basic math. Nissan has already planned to replace the 5.6 with a 3.5 twin turbo 6.
@@thomas735 Toyota switched to what they call their "global platform", which is the 1 platform being used for ALL of their body-on-frame vehicles, full-size and medium-sized. Whoever your government is has nothing to do with their choice. Toyota is cutting production costs by using 1 platform and 2 engines in North America and an added diesel option for the east.
If by "the government", you mean American government, the vast majority of Toyota's sales are in the eastern hemisphere (Africa, Asia, middle east). US efficiency regulations have nothing to do with their using this global platform to cut costs. Governments have efficiency requirements, not mpg requirements. Asia and Europe have always used smaller, more efficient engines. North American engines were always wastefully big, just to sell more fuel. I was not criticizing the more efficient engines. Just the lack of engine options, which Toyota will regret.
Toyota expecting smaller engines to be workhorses is crazy. Yes, they’ve been in the hybrid game for years now, but in their sedans, never in their trucks. That’s a whole different ball game.
Toyota never wanted to do this. Emissions standards have forced their hands. There is nothing they can do. They can try to make this more reliable, but turbos are inherently less reliable.
camry 2025 only hybrid. less options for customers
The hilux has been running turbos for ages.
@@jerdelauren9972 I think they have more than enough pull in the market to at least offer the N/A engines for a couple of yrs and then discontinue it, kinda like how Jeep did with the Wagoneer. but to just drop it altogether and don’t give your customers any options is disgusting
Well said 👍

Love this comment, so true. There's not as many "complete crap" vehicles out there as the Internet makes it seem like, but there's also a lot fewer "bullet proof" gonna last 400K miles vehicles than there used to be.
Vast majority of vehicles out there right now 100% fall into the "mediocre" category you're talking about. So you just go with the best value. And right now, that's definitely not Toyota.
Glad to see you provide positive feedback for Toyota. I’ve been a Toyota fanboy for over 30 years, but now I feel dead ended with their lineup. If feel your pain.

I was in the market for a new midsize truck and have been saving for a couple of years. All the while scouring the internet and taking test drives. I kept coming back to two issues, price and engines. I finally pulled the trigger a month ago and I got a fully decked out Nissan Pro 4x out the door for $43,000. Sure, just like the billions of battery powered smart phones and tablets on Earth with the millions of failing batteries every day.
There is a much higher failure rate with ICE engines.
A large battery and simple electric motors are much more reliable and will last longer than ICE vehicles.
An electric motor can run for 1 million miles and batteries can last over 500,000 miles. ICE vehicles can't beat them.

Aint buying the turbo crap..
What will you buy?
True. The last good trucks are gone. Good thing I just bought a low mileage 3rd gen tacoma.
These engines are under-squared... They make more torque at low rpm, and generate much less heat. The turbos are there to add power when needed, they don't need to always be working. The design is far superior to the old V6 that has no power unless the rpms are screaming.
Nothing is superior when it won't last as long as the previous gen.
One question I have with this new 4-cylinder Turbo if it's direct injection it's going to have carbon built up in the cylinders no one has been addressing this are they all asleep that will reduce the lifespan of it 100 % there was no problem with the V6 because it had both direct injection and port injection that kept the valves clean is everyone asleep on this problem😅
@@David9726100 I would agree if they don't last more than 150k miles consistently.... But let's be honest, it's too early to say they aren't reliable. The new Toyota engines will last if people do good maintenance, let then warm up and cool down properly. Yahoos beating on them and not doing anything right will see the engine fail sooner just like any other engine

Appreciate your channel. Rev Nation and The Car Guy Online are being objective about this as well.
Should I buy the 24 sienna woodland edition? Or not
Turbo is a 4 cylinder killer.
I couldn’t possibly agree more with the title. These overworked and underpowered engines are never going to have the longevity we’re accustomed to. The climate change hoax alarmists need to be ignored. Let the markets decide.
Should I grab a 2024 4Runner Pro while I can?
From what I understand talking to dealerships is that the Japanese have allowed the US to kinda take control of trucks for the most part, and they were very very hesitant because they care A LOT about their brand, the whole reliability thing. Basically, our Toyota trucks just got the same treatment GMC and Ford trucks get.
Yeah I think there’s a lot of truth to that
the downsizing of engines is cringe no matter the vehicle also entirely made in mexico turned me 100% off
Having just traded off my 23 tundra platinum for a Sierra, I was really worried I’d regret it but I was ear to ear smiles driving the Sierra home…just love the build quality, and mine came from the Fort Wayne plant (although I’ve heard their silao plant is also good). Anyways, happy now feel like I’m back in a truck. The tundra just feels very plasticy and artificial, but I will say the powertrain does drive nicely. I had disabled the artificial engine noise and really preferred it that way, not sure what they were thinking but previous gen Tundra fans feeling a little overlooked with the new one makes total sense. The true predecessor of the previous gen tundra is the 21+ titan’s, IMO.
GM is worse then Toyota
Now are Very confused.. What about the Landcruiser and the Lexus GX550 Overtrail? This ones comes with the same Problem?
Sorry now I am very confused
Where it's made, price, engine
Greed knows no bounds and Toyota is the same hyper inflated prices and no willingness to reduce prices to levels we can afford
I agree 100% with you i will not buy another toyota product.
I'm hearing some problems with quality and engine problems....
I WAS a Toyota fanboy, until recently, it’s sad. 😞
Shill's, AKA Sellouts - Galore On TH-cam - Thank's For The Truth Sir
They botched the new 4runner even worse.
Only thing I'd disagree with is that the Taco is in the image of Sato's vision for Toyota, because this Taco has been in development long before he took the reigns.
They have to flop so hard for them to learn not to do this… 60-80k for a Toyota is insane money
I totally 👍 agree with you bro , they are going to lose a lot of loyal customers.
Well the new CEO is about to find out his entire mess.
You're AWESOME, thank you for keeping it real
Not saying you’re wrong but if you compare the market what do you think is a fare price now in days. Also you can thank epa for the 4cyinders. It’s not just Toyota is all the new cars coming out. All cars now made are designed for number of years over mileage.
That person that you are talking about ...being a yes man is .......Trd John!!! He will fake it all day!!
Not sure with the reliability risks regarding the hybrid turbo in the TRD Pro brings similar value as the Ford Ranger Raptor. The latter at least has a v6 turbo so it’s a bit less stressed in the engine department not to mention the better off road specs and 10-speed. Provided you can wait for dealership markups to fade away, the Ranger Raptor is a much better buy I think (value to price it seems).
Long time Toyota guy, but that’s what I’m going to get. I’ll wait it out for a bit and get the Ranger Raptor for msrp or less.
Jesus, ford is terrible
@@wonderboy4993 I can only go by family and friends that own Fords trucks and they are all happy with them. I have an old 93 Ranger outback and it’s still going strong.
LMAO Ford Raptor. Yeah good luck with that.
Out of the new Tundra competitors, which one is the most reliable?
That was beautiful when the little guy chose your truck 😢
Toyota is counting on the fanboys to keep buying. It was ok when they were slightly higher than Nissan, the domestic brands but between the new prices and the dealer mark ups, being in heavy debt in this economy is suicidal.
My last 4 trucks were Toyotas, my next will be a Ford. I’m not spending $50,000 for a 4 cylinder truck made in Mexico.
If you keep repeating those words, your wish will come true. You’ll just love “Ford Life” and the special care being doled out by its dealers’ sales and service departments 😂
Thanks for not been bias to a brand
Do you think the tundra quality is bad because it’s made in the US? Because I’ve seen lots of complaints about tundras but not lx600 or the Lc300. The dealership price gouging is and will always be stupid. Luckily, no issues so far on my ‘23 Sequoia which is made in tx
Shots fired at TRD Jon that dude is a total shill for Toyota.
Yeah, he complained openly about his Tundra on one video and said he was thinking of selling it because of all of the rattles. Toyota must have had a word with him because he's back drinking the Kool-Aid.
Td34 might be king fanboy tho
I think the new Tacoma is great. The 4cyl is in GM , ford Ranger , as far as long term and durability , but all mfg are going that way. Our govt is putting such tight restrictions on auto makers. Sucks !! I have a 24 TRD off road (2,600) so far. When I was pricing a midsize truck that’s loaded premium stuff they are all in the same price ballpark!
You’re beating a dead horse.
They all have it and look how long they last.
Thanks for the video
dude - first time coming across your channel. My first impression is that you’re very articulate, have done your research, and have a very based opinion… basically I thought you were smarter than the average dude. Then at around 10:40, you drop the bomb that you’re a PhD. Haha.. that checks out!
Really good video and hope this messaging gets echoed all the way up to Toyota’s leadership (although I’m sure the sales data is making it known).
