Turn your shutter speed to 4x your frame rate. Ie- 30FPS, 1/120 and crank the ISO. It helps. Seems antithetical but I saw a TH-camr do it and was amazed. I’m looking for a small action camera, not for action, but for mall walking tours, city walks and walks at night in the city lights. I was about to buy the ace pro but then this action 5 dropped. Do you think the action 5 is a good option for evening and mall walking videos? The pocket 3 is incredible.
Hey Charlie, enjoyed your video! You put a lot of work in this. I'm hoping to do some comparisons too! I've been out of the last 4 months of YT, so it's nice to see your videos again!
Can Osmo Action 5 Pro be used for recording at night? It has a higher ISO than the Osmo Action 4 and a dedicated night mode. The Osmo Pocket 3 does not disappoint at night when recording, only that when you use it on a chest mount or backpack, the gimbal moves where it wants, sometimes it films too low, only records the feet or sometimes it runs from side to side for no reason apparent.
Just got action 5 pro. Tried the supernight (can only 1080) and normal 4k+30FPS in two nights and cannot see much and much worse than my iphone 13 pro max. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
@@CharlieVN Thanks a lot, Charlie. iphone is actually doing well, as always. I just cannot get the same effect as you do with action 5 pro. I cannot see much at all on my action 5 pro recordings at night. It is pretty good during day time. So I wonder what's your specific steps for setting. I just used both video and super night. Neither works.
A really informative review. DJI claimed OA5's low light was simnifically improved, but here is the truth you're showing. Nice that you compared with Pocket 3, the result was expectable but I didn't know how much P3 will be better. Surprisingly Iphone 16 shots garbage in low light. I do not own any of Iphone but I thought I give a great footage even in low light, especially 16th.
the iPhone 16 pro has a great "Primary" camera, it's better than the action 5, however the field of view is so wildly different that it wasn't comparable. The ultra wide camera of all smart phones are notoriously bad in low light, the iPhone 16 pro had an updated sensor, but it's still no better than previous generations, and as you can see here, it's bad. Pocket 3 is still final boss level in image quality.
Would still appreciate a high bitrate option. However, there are two glaring tradeoffs, battery life and heat generation. Users should still be given the option, with warnings.

@@CharlieVN I am looking for something smaller than a camcorder, but with a more usable image than a GoPro/action camera, to use for dash/Plant/C cam stuff. The Pocket 3 has a great camera, but I’m afraid I’m going to break it, and it doesn’t work well as a dash camera as it auto tracks the background when you don’t want it to. The GoPros/action cameras are practically indestructible, but the image is just not really good. And the waterproofing makes them annoyingly heat up. A camcorder is similar to what I need, but I don’t want the 20X lens. The Sony AX53 is like 8 years old now too! If it was half price I would buy it now, but it’s still $1100!! I also do not like the BOSS system in them very much, and lens is not wide enough for what I need either. I’ve seen a whole lot of twitchy footage out of that BOSS system. Would rather have the OSS in the AX700/Z90V, but then again we are still talking about a whole camcorder. I want something the size of the GoPro/Action, but with the camera of the P3, and a very simple OIS instead of digital stabilization.
I can't thank you enough for posting this. You literally answered all questions I've had. DLOG saves the Action 5 in low-light while Normal and SuperNight are unusable but it doesn't save it nearly enough in my opinion. Pocket 3 is the only option for small cameras now. Just wish it had better photography capability. Thank you so much!
I actually returned my Pocket 3 for the action 5 pro. The pocket 3 is a great camera and is a beast in lowlight. But I hate how fragile it is. One drop and you’re done. Which is exactly what happened to me. I had the pocket 3 on a tripod and it fell over and only the bottom hit the ground. So I thought the gimbal was fine. But then I tried using it a few days later and the gimbal was all out of wack. The motors must’ve been knocked loose. Thank god I had the geek squad protection plan. I immediately returned it and got full store credit and used it towards the Action 5. It’s not perfect but I’m already loving it more for daily vlogs and BTS content without worrying about it breaking.
How can the 5 Pro have a lower recording bitrare compared to the 4? This is absurd. Users should be given the option of selecting a higher bitrate setting at the expense of lower battery life and higher heat output. DJI must add this to a firmware update. The bitrate is too low on the 5 Pro.
Awesome comparison. Too bad about the worse jitter. It's as if the 5 is using a slower shutter to make ir brighter but this negatively effects electronic image stabilization. Can you increase shutter speed to reducw jitter but still have decent brightness?
In the early morning footage you showed, the sky in the Action 5 was so blue compared to the iPhone. Do you recall what the actual sky color looked like? This is one thing a lot of action cameras tend to do, over saturate the colors.
