  • This video is about the course on “Optimisation Of Distillation Process”. The video is targeted at working chemical and process engineers as well as fresh chemical engineers and chemical engineering students. This is delivered in three videos.
    (1) Part 1 - Conventional optimization methods at design stage
    (2) Part 2 - Heat integrated Technologies for distillation process
    (3) Case studies in Heat Integrated Technologies
This video focuses on “Optimization Of Distillation Process Part 1- Conventional methods at design stage”.
The video discusses about the conventional methods of optimising distillation process. Column optimisation is important step in the design of distillation column in chemical process plants.
How do you determine the optimum location of the feed tray?
How do you determine what is the optimum pressure for column operation? What will be the effect of varying temperature of the feed to the column? What benefits you can achieve by optimising these variables?
All these questions are discussed in detail.
Process plant debottlenecking for capacity enhancement is another opportunity for optimization of an existing distillation column. The video presents the alternative ways of doing this economically.
Case study is the best way to understand the optimization of distillation process. A case study on optimization of propane -propylene separation is presented in this video, which will make the video interesting, engaging and understand the economic analysis as well
Process simulation modelling is used to simulate the distillation column and present the economic analysis.

Due to the decrease in reflux ratio, the number of trays will increase are we not considering it??

For optimization of distillation process there are certain fixed column design parameters and some variables to achieve the desired separation objective. These variables are discussed in the course. When optimized the column will be more energy efficient. The number trays is fixed in the simulation as also the distillate and bottom purity. The reflux and reboiler duty gets optimized in the process.

I would like to add one more point. Number of trays is not influenced by the reflux ratio alone. It is strongly influenced by the relative volatility of the components, which inturn is a function of other variables such as pressure
