    Villagers from the small Croatian village of Gornje Bukovlje talk about the changes in the village over the past 40 years.
    I) Selling cattle to buy tractors
    II) Growing food and raising livestock
    III) Growing hemp and weaving
    IV) Taking the cattle to pasture and singing

    I am sure it was a life full of happy neighbors all working and singing together and romance was also remembered. Many happy people died from those times and the young and pretty are now old thinking how it was and fast their life went. It is sad, but life continues and we cry and then we die and then others may have remembered and then there is NO MORE forever......Carl M -----You may use my feelings and publish what I said as your own feelings and life and past memories of long forgotten..............God Bless.

    A great film and a great historical document for the future Andrew. I remember people like this in my mother's country Ireland. People were not so different years ago, their quality of life was better because they relied on each other.

    • @andrewnorris2
      @andrewnorris2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not only relied on each other but there was an institution here during socialism called a 'zadruga' where families held land and livestock in common. While the zadruga officially no longer exists land here is still tied up in this manner. Thanks for watching this film, Michael, I'm very pleased with it and it was intended to be my 'final' word on the village but events intervened and I made another 18 films in the series! But these stopped at number 78, The last bee keeper in the village, after one of my dearest friends died and so his was the final film in that series.

    I grew up in a village just like this, and this morals and ways of free living were taught to me, now I wonder why the need to separate this way of living from technological advancements, the ones that are actually advancements, not facebook or skyscrapers, people will never enjoy life in a drawer, I'm talking about hydroponics and aquaponics, permaculture, solar and wind, biodigesters, electric tools and computers, why not aim for a better way of life, not for wealth and fame but for actual living, among everything that was not thought of our mind, but what actually is out there? We've lost something, and we miss it, all of us, but few ask the question, what is it that we lost? We got lost in this game of fantasy and delusion, sending our kids to war so they can die for our security, sending our old to live alone, taking care only of our own comfort, without regard to the rest of the world, world you feel like you are not part of, you see it as an enemy, that tries to kill you, to put you down, so you invent masters, and gods so you can have security, but this illusion goes on for millennia, no one got the security, or comfort that was promised, when will you let it go? I would have one question for all the billionaires that destroyed it for the rest of us: Are you happy? Fundamentally happy? I guess not, you would not have to chase all that anymore, your fight would stop in it's tracks and find the meaning of life, find the beauty and not the superficial, find love, not lust. Don't worry, your dreams will come true, we will put an end to it all, we are getting closer and closer to a man made Apocalypse, if that is the only way to kill your ego's, than by all means go ahead, unfortunately you will then realize, there was a better way!

    KRAJ - indeed! A vivid and moving testament to the riches of the old, labour-intensive village life. Beautifully realized and the whole four-part finale is of course epic in dimension. It is the same kind of story everywhere. People are lured into consumer oriented modernity in a double whammy: seduced into avoiding the hard work of the centuries old traditions without realizing the deeper cost as they fall for notions of progress and inevitably as the land does not sustain the materialist dream sooner or later are drawn to the cities. Then what? Only a generation later they look back to the countryside for what? - a second-home, a weekend retreat. With little motive else but to do a little light gardening and put their feet up. What else as they have lost both the knowledge and the facility to work with the land.
    A glorious and meaningful final episode Andrew. And I salute your own intensive, meticulous, creative achievement over the whole Sixty! What touched me deeply here, in a moment, was expressed simply thus - 'It's nice when you have something to offer people!' And you have done that too my dear friend! Bravo!

      Yes, wolves and bears would be interesting to film especially if they came to Bukovlje. Maybe you would be interested to see this film, 'The Wolfman -The Diary of Paul Balenovic (BBC documentary)' There are some stunning views of the Velebit mountains.

    Have you visited the Museum of Rural Life in Reading?

    • @andrewnorris2
      @andrewnorris2  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't visited that museum. I'd love to go but I might see many of the exhibits ironically. What is a living tradition in Croatia is now confined to a museum. Having said that much of what you see in this video is now history. The elderly have died off and the young have no interest to work that land, sadly! Good to see you here. Thanks for watching.

      I was really satisfied with this film, to let the friends I had made simply speak for themselves and from them I learnt so much to enable me to get closer to nature and the land. As one lady said to me when refering to working in the field, 'That was my faculty.' There is a lot to be said for practical work! Thanks for watching this one, Linda, this film means a lot to me.

    Lovely film Andrew. The Croatian government should try and promote and protect these old customs and the sense of community that you have recorded. Here in the UK with the breakdown of communities, faith, marriages, and old customs, we experience high levels of mental and physical ill health. Suicide rates amongst the young, and male population, have never been so high and millions of elderly people suffer from loneliness and a sense of lack of purpose. Addictions are at epidemic levels and causing considerable distress, crime and deaths. Even though the UK government currently spend over £134 billion on the NHS and local authorise invest over £500 million in health and social care each year it does not meet demand, or stem the increase in illnesses and death rates. The ‘old ways’ had many benefits and should not all be discarded 🤭

    • @andrewnorris2
      @andrewnorris2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Mike, this film was to be a summing up of the village and how it had changed, much to the detriment of everyone. There is so much truth in what you write. Millions spent on the NHS yet people rely on it too much without taking responsibility for their own behaviour and what they choose to eat. I filmed a 100th birthday some years ago and that woman had been to a doctors only three times in her life! Sadly, despite the films, giving lectures, film shows and TV appearances no one seems interested in this village culture. But they will, one day, once they have lost it all and it becomes something for people to be nostalgic about. Thanks for watching
