The big difference is in America, people think life is good if you're able to make enough money to live a comfortable life and afford everything you want. In the Philippines, life is good when you have family and friends by your side to laugh with, cry with and to be inspired by them with or without money to spend.

So true, that's why we have poor infrastructure, no clean water, horrible traffic, brown outs, disgusting streets, homeless children, and people still living in shakes that are ready to crumble when we get our next good earthquake.

Been to other Asian countries & I still don't understand that happiness is not all about richness or status quo, it is the ability to turn the worst times into a normal day at least, what about a normal day? It can be the best day in a snap...a Filipino can start the fire anytime, anywhere.
Welcome to the best chill country & the happiest people on earth.

The reason why the Philippines has no chaotic minds unlike the west is because of our laidback cultures: 1. Ambitious but not so greedy because of the tribal and family oriented cultures. 2. Filipinos being so resilient had been in hardships since the time of their grandparents the reason that any small victory or achievements in life is being appreciated.
    3. Filipinos are brave people but practice and subdue its tempers by mostly just walking from troubles. We have minimal cases of roadrage only happens sometimes in the big cities. 4. We have very rare case of mass shootings killing many people 10 and up casualties in 1 ocassion but take note we do also have cases of mental illness but Unlike in the west where it becomes normal. When calamities besiege places even in its most destructive manner, filipinos still have that tendency to get relax ,smiles and laugh. It never happens in many many country. In the US when hurricane Katrina ravage many states people are hysterical and so angry you can hardly talked to them blaming someone especially the government for all their musfortunes.

Except you forget America attacked you 126 years ago killing 10s of thousands.
After giving you your independence they made sure to install a corrupt regime to kowtow to America's wishes.
      Now you are just subservient
to their wealth and sex pars.

Well written. I do hope you experience the Philippines to the fullest. I am currently living in Australia, people would ask me - what's your long-term goal? To which I say, I'd come back home. They would give me this look and say why would you trade the Aussie life to the Philippines? To which we say, it's different back home - your neighbour is family, be part of the community and you will never feel alone - the marites will always mind your business haha. It's very hard to explain but its just happy there - regardless of the bad traffic.

You mention baseball. One of the nice advantages to living overseas is you can subscribe to MLB TV and see all the games without blackouts. In the PI I used to eat breakfast by the pool and stream MLB TV on my phone. Subscribing after the season starts is a pretty good (discounted) price.
FYI - I think the word "lechon" has the emphasis on the first syllable.
    Keep up the good work!!

This is great man, but as a Filipino citizen, there are some of us that want to improve things. Yes, we got family and kindness, but we also have a mass amount of homeless children, we can't drink water from our taps, our electricity goes out often, and our traffic pollution is next level awful. So yea, thanks for noticing the good stuff, but I ask foreigners to not sweep under the rug our problems but instead help us push for improvements.

    1. Limited if any public trahs cans.
    2. No toilet paper at public toilets in malls.
    3. Hot and in rainy season the humidity will drown you.
    4. American food at restaurants is not up to standards you are used to. Pizza is poor at best and hot dogs are terrible.
    5. Filipino time.
    6. Traffic during rush hour is a nightmare.
    7. Sarcasm and figures of speech will go over most peoples heads. So you risk offending people by accident.
    On the good side……
    8. The people are generally super super friendly and nice.
    9. Food is very affordable mostly.
    10. Beaches everywhere so dont waste your time and money on the tourist spots. Just go to local beaches.
    11. Basically everyone speaks English.
    12. Exchange rate is super helpful.
    13. Mecial care is generally very affordable but make sure you have insurance for major events.

My only real serious complain is the "skin tax". Even being with a Filipina is try to buy a car, rent or buy a house if they see an American guy first they will try to jack up the price. So whenever possible I let her do all the talking so we don't pay the skin tax.

    • @mrwonderful612

      Very true.
I don't really mind it at the street markets where I get told the RayBan sunglasses I want are $3.00 (Peso equivalent), but my Filipina wife returns and the cost for her is only $1.50. I understand a street market bump in pricing.
But, I have found the same thing happens in professional offices as well, as with my dentist, my dermatologist, my travel agent, and others where the difference in price that I get quoted is HUNDREDS of dollars more than the Filipinos are assessed.
      Thanks, Brian! I just subscribed.
