    I've always heard that muscle uses more calories or whatever to maintain itself. So, I think that when you started working your upper body, your new upper body muscles increased the amount of calories you burn every day. Your body ended up having to use the fat covering your abs as fuel. Also, negatives also work well when you want to learn pullups.
